My mum was part of the Women's land army in Hampshire during the second World War. She still has her release certificate which is framed on the wall of her care home home. We used to say about her growing up " Don't worry about mum, she's bomb proof". She will be 99 in October. Thanks for a very touching video Kirsten and Joerg.
This cottage was a lovely reminder of a world gone by. I think, as long as we preserve these ornaments and objects they will stay in our memory as a gift for future generations. You did a great job of filming it in such a detail. 😊
Wow Kirsten, this ranks right up top of my favorite cottages. The simpler the better. Yall are so blessed. I love your videos, take care and be safe. Love from Douglas Georgia, USA 😊😊😊😊😊😊❤❤❤❤❤
As always thank you Kirsten and Joerg this has to be my ultimate favourite being a lover of the forties history styles way of life and being a land girl was tough especially for girls who came from gentry backgrounds and had never gotten their hands dirty before but they all mucked in together for the greater good .A very interesting cottage and it is now on my list to go and stay with my husband daughter and two dogs .Great that Glastonbury is so dog friendly .You are both amazing advocates for tourism in the uk and some of these quaint little houses and cottages you frequent are just my cup of tea .Blessings to you both and I will look forward to your next adventure. I have been in Germany and it is also a beautiful place to visit and I hope to return again someday .❤
We should not forget but so glad that Britain and Germany are friends and close allies these days. I loved the cottage and almost could imagine the ladies of the land army shattered after a day on the land , relaxing by the fire in the cottage.
It's wonderful to see history revisited in this exact context you highlighted: two German migrants exploring history, learning new perspectives on their adoptive country and just spreading great good cheer and much forward thought-- poignant when it's acknowledged how informed these cheerful gentle souls are. In a perfect world we'd see enlightened humans with intelligent curiosity, reverence for landscape, history (and aesthetics too) just like Kirsten & Joerg all over the world. Instead, we have unpleasant grievance industries and other deeply upsetting mentalities clashing all over Europe and the West now. If all migrants could be like these two, just IMAGINE what the world would be like...
Thank you so much. I am almost 82 and remember so many of the products in the land girls house! I remember the kitchen cabinet and the stove too! such fun to watch
Grandpa had a landgirl working on his farm. Ivy Holman became our 'Aunty' Ivy. Loved this episode...fond memories...the Tell Me game in the chest of drawers, and the split rubber hose for showering from the down spout bath taps... and so much more! Thank you 🎉
They have done their homework with regard to this cottage: it is a museum. This is so important for the generations ongoing. Thank you for showing us so many details. Stepping back in time. Women's effort in wartime has been quite amazing.❤💐
I was born in October 1945 just 2 weeks after the war ended. This time capsule reminded me of so many items that were common while I was growing up. What a treat! Thanks for the memories!❤
Yvonne DeCarlo was a Canadian/American actress, singer and dancer. She appeared in films and in the 1960s starred in the TV series The Munsters as Lilly, the vampiress. I loved her as Moses' wife in The Ten Commandments.
So unlike all the other places you've stayed at. I'm 66 years old and the decor sweeps me back to homes in the late '50s and even into the '60s that still looked so much like that.
Gorrrrrgeous!! 😍 For everybody who has never lain in bed or sat by an indoor fire whilst listening to rain on a corrugated roof, you really need to put that sensory experience on your bucket list. It's wonderful.
It's wonderful that they saved a piece of history. It's humbling to think of those who went and stayed at places like this in order to help feed a nation. The fact that women and some children, had to step up to ensure food was grown and factories were manned in order for supplies to be available. I know in the US, materials and food were constantly being sent overseas.
I will have to say, I've been so entertained with all your adventurous travels and stays, but today takes the 🎂!!!! What a interesting informative peek into another long-gone Era. Thank you both for making so many of us happy to come along❤
It was a very touching time journey this time, dear Kirsten and Jörg. Indeed. War is such a terrible thing. I hope for the best for us all to never have to experience it, especially for my children and grandchildren.
Captain's Paradise, British film, 1953....Alec Guinness and Yvonne DeCarlo. This cottage is such a lovely time capsule of different works women did during WWII.
So excited can’t wait love to u both from Maxine. 83yrs young and beautiful daughter Gaily your our favourite love the 40Ss was born in 1941. What a wonderful idea. As usual thanku. So much xx❤
Hi Kirsten and Joerg, from Australia. My Mother was a member of the Australian Women's Land Army for the duration of WW11. It was so lovely to see your video today. It brought some lovely memories of stories told to me by my mother and her life long Australian Women's Land Army friends. Sadly now they are all no longer with us. They stayed in some rather primitive accommodation in some parts of Australia, having to stuff their mattresses with hay to keep warm at night. However there was a wonderful comradery amongst them, 0:06 which remained for their entire lives. I am the beneficiary of many letters between my Mum and Dad during this time, which have given me an insight into their thoughts and feelings of a young courting couple, separated by war, at this time. Mum gave a great description of events in the Land Army in her letters to Dad, her then boyfriend. I must confess to only reading them once after my Mum passed and then putting them back into the tin in which Mum kept them safe for all those years. (She even painted it a lovely blue covered with white daisies.) I felt it too intrusive to reread them but I feel as if I now knew a part of them unknown to me beforehand. Jusr so you know, they had a wonderfully long happy marriage together. ❤❤ So thank you again for your video today. 😊
Way back in the 70's, I remember as children, we had so similar kitchen cabinets. Only ours was made out of a thin metal. My mom loved them. As we were living in an old 2 story farmhouse that was over a hundred years old. The property was completely surrounded by corn and bean fields. The metal cabinets were a huge blessing as in the midwest winters mice always managed to find a way in. The metal cabinets kept the rodents from being able to get into the food & dishes. I remember being my mom's helper by carrying supplies and following her around the house as she "mouse proofed" various nooks and crannies lol. She'd block up a hole with steel wool, metal can lids and either nails or staple gun. But they would manage to chew through the wooden walls in another area within a couple of days. Mom sure utilized those metal cabinets. Even had them for linens, clothes, and games.
That big grey cabinet in the kitchen was called the 'Housewife's Helper' - the shelf that pulled down into a small table was designed to make it easy to roll out pastry - that's why flour and sugar was stored just behind it, for easy access while baking. They were extremely popular from the 1940s right into the 1960s - my Mum had one - and then people got their kitchens renovated in the 1970s and 80s, and sadly, many of these old HH's ended up at the tip. I love them - forget air fryers and all the fancy kitchen gadgets of today - these old cabinets were simple, practical and rather charming.
Here in the states, they're called Hoosier cabinets. My mother has her grandmother's. The style is a bit different (like the worktop is open, not fold-down), but it's the same principal. One of the drawers under the worktop is metal and it was for storing your flour.
A lot of those things were still around in the fifties and early sixties, I remember them well !! We had that exact bath and taps 😂 and we played a lot of board games then too. Mum and dad long gone but very nostalgic memories, life was much simpler then.
What a fun and nostalgic video ❤️! It must have been such an honor and privilege to stay in such a historic “Land Girl” house ❤️! Thank you so much for sharing your historic weekend with us ❤️
We really enjoyed this video! My mum loved seeing some of the old items that she remembered in the UK during the war, especially the old newspaper of the Coronation of King George VI. We can't believe that nobody has walked off with some of those treasures! Mum's 97 and we all live in New Zealand now. Thank you again, well done! Sue
When I saw the radio, it made me almost see the young women sitting and listening to Churchill for news of the war and encouragement. Definitely the most unique place I've ever seen you stay. I didn't know such places existed. Thank you for showing it!
Absolutely love, love this video. My husbands Uncle dated a “Land Girl” while stationed in England. Brought back memories of his stories. Also liked the tour. I am a great fan of the King Arthur legend/stories also. Thanks for the memories!
On the front cover of the magazine is Yvonne de Carlo, a Canadian-American actress. She was in many films and on Broadway but was mostly known for her role as Lily Munster in the US tv show 'The Munsters.'
That's so interesting. The nurses in their uniforms are smiling although the times were so hard. I remember people having these shelters in their gardens here in Germany. Thank you.
Kirsten und Jörg and a "Night at the Museum", lol. That was awsome guys. I can`t believe all the historic things they keep in this place. Well, the whole place is historic I guess. I wonder why the nurse`s things where still in the cottage. I wonder, what happened to her. Huggs from the Schurwald. 🙂
Oh wow what memories for me. The eiderdown on your bed was the same as I had as a child. So warm and I loved the pattern. Yvonne De Carlo was a well known actress I remember her as Lily the wife of Herman Munster in the spooky funny tv show.
We watched the land girls on TV. This cottage is very nostalgic. Love the vintage look and items. Great story of the land girl . Thank you for sharing your trip with us Kirsten and Joerg. Cheers Ron and Dovie.
My Nana had one of those cabinets in her kitchen, it was just like the one in this house , it was her absolute pride and joy! I remember her slicing bread on that pull down cupboard and making my sister and I cheese and jam sandwiches after school…happy days ❤️ Great video as always, thank you both.
Mine did too! And she would let me use the drop door as a bed for my dolly when I stayed overnight. Makes me very nostalgic. Glad you shared your memory.
This house and the music that you are playing brings back memories of my father dancing with his 2 hands with his index fingers up in the air swaying back-and-forth. 😊😊
"The first soap to clean your aura" Haha, the contrast of those hippie shops with the life of the Land Girls. They would have been dealing with such gritty and practical things, sometimes traumatizing. Hello from Windsor Ontario Canada. My maternal grandmother was a bomb girl during WWII. She left her home in Cape Breton at 17 years old to work in the manufacture of munitions. She met my grandfather who was not overseas because he was a farmer. They were married and so she made her life in Ontario. It truly was a World War. Across the globe, people were affected and it changed the paths of their lives. and then so many people on both sides lost their lives as well. I was touched to see this place and learn about the women who did their part.
Oh absolutely! One of my aunts (my mom’s sister - my mother’s entire family had to flee because of WWII, they lost their home and then were given a few rooms in a house we showed a couple of videos ago) went to England with 2 of my other aunts. One emigrated to Ontario, Canada and the other 2 emigrated to the US.
I would think it would have been very rare for the Land Girls to have stayed in such luxury. Many stayed in barns and places that were freezing and had no indoor plumbing. I did a lot of research about the women who served. I wrote several novels which I never published about their role during the war. One book was about the women working ont he soil, and another about the women (really girls in their late teens and early 20s) working the narrowboats bringing parts to the north and coal to the south,) and another about studying nursing at the Florence Nightingale School of Nursing in London and then being sent to hospitals where the wounded from D-Day were brought. These women were heros and the country would never have survived without their service. Thank you for bringing this house to my attention. I have been to the UK 55 times but was never aware of this cottage. Jane, Philadelphia
This reminded me of a dear elderly gentleman I would visit as a very young child. His tiny cottage was wonderfully simple. He would smoke his pipe and read the newspapers at the kitchen table and treat me to a Scotch mint or a Humbug since I was such a polite visitor. Wonderful memories, thank you❤
I love your open, enthusiastic, tolerant, curious and friendly commentary; especially on this video as Glastonbury is the opposite of your style choices, but it doesn’t matter! This video is both thoughtful and good fun😊 Once again, I loved it.
A beautiful tribute to young ladies who did their part during a difficult time. Loved the view from St Michael's near Glastonbury. My brief visit to England only allowed a drive through Glastonbury. Thank you for sharing!
What a lovely place. So much I remember from my grans house and growing up. We had that rubber shower head that you attach to the bath taps. So fun. Thank you.
What a lovely vlog that showed and reminded me of when I was a little girl. I was born five years after the war but recognised many of the artefacts in the cottage. The larder cupboard with the pull-down work surface like we had at home, the Oxo tin, just like the one my dad took his sandwiches to work in, and also, when you opened the toy/games drawer, I saw a game I used to have - ‘Tell Me’! Such a look back at a time many of us have connections with and glad you enjoyed your visit. And Glastonbury..........just something else! 😂It’s brilliant.
Wow… I felt ALL kinds of emotions watching this video. Some… very sad and teary… some very quirky and playful and some made me want to flash a ☮️ and ❤sign to mankind, 😊as I am a baby boomer. I must say.. I Honor ALL the women, past and present, that sit in silence and do their do diligence to help a (their) world in need,👍🏻 and Cheers to the accomplished female as Jane Austen often wrote about. Big love and appreciation to you both!!!
The viewing of the WWII Tin Cottage you have most graciously made possible for viewers gives a sweet nostalgic insight into that period and makes it more real for me, a US citizen. Once again, thank you! The view of the air raid shelter was sobering yet speaks beautifully of the will of the human spirit to survive and live. You both do a wonderful job of observing with reverence the remembrance of such a challenge. On a totally lighter and different note, Kirsten, I adore your clothing. I haven't complimented yet but do so now. I love the top (?) with green and blue scallop closure! Wonderfully fun!! Also, congratulate you on the musical score--as usual most appropriate for the setting. Blessings.
Wow! My mum was a land girl and she worked on a farm in Wiltshire during the war. I remember her saying how physically hard the work was, milking the cows, hay making, harvesting crops but she had a lots of laughs with her land girl friends. And the kitchen cabinet, my parents had one very similar! What a fantastic and very interesting place. Thank you for sharing ❤❤
Wonderful video as always 😍 my grandad came home on leave to find the family in the Anderson shelter, buried under the rubble of their house. He dug them out and took them out of London and all the way up to Rochdale in Lancashire, not to return until the end of the war. When we bought our first house, built in 1949, we found under the carpets Lino that was as new. Under that were beautiful pine floorboards and 1940s newspapers protecting the floor. I still have those in my memory chest.
Absolutely my most favorite era! Love all the movies and books, the music, clothing and makeup, just my favorite. My home is all vintage from 40-60’s. This was very special to me, thank you so much ❤❤❤
What a lovely place, so interesting. My nan was a Land Girl and used to tell me about going to dances when the American troops arrived in our little town!
What a terrific video! It’s like staying in a time capsule. The nurses case was fascinating. And, I looove the cabinet in the kitchen with pull down table. I’d happily stay in that little cottage spending hours reading through the old magazines, sipping tea, and blow drying my hair! Ps LOVE the music you’ve selected to accompany the video!
Thank you for this video! We really appreciated all the history in this Cottage. We love history! Especially my husband with WWII history. We both loved that cupboard too! Take care from Canada!❤
Thank you Kirsten for the lovely tour. This cottage holds so much history ! Such an awful time in our world !! You honored this Tin Cottage with your careful care.
Thank you so very much for this fabulous journey back in time, I remembered some of the items still used in my grandparents house, the very emotion of the time shone through, the attention to detail in the restoration was very touching Glastonbury, one of my favourite places to visit when I need a little escapism And yes, they are happy to allow my lovely Rottweiler in everywhere ❤ Thank you Kirsten u Jorg 🙏🏼
Lovely vlog of times my generation only heard about from older relatives. You are both such friendly diplomats.Glastonbury is certainly different from anywhere in the UK.😄🎉
A Land Girl cottage - Wow. And I love the vintage touches (especially the cabinet and the coronation mugs). Too cool! I’ve enjoyed reading historical fiction novels about this period. What a wonderful step back in history! Love it.
I pushed send on my comment too soon! The treasures under the bed. ❤❤❤❤❤ interesting tour of the Anderson shelter. Wow! This place is a great step back in time.
Hello from Alabama USA! Wonderful cottage! Great learning about the Land girls; a bit of history I haven't heard before. And the village with all those quirky shops. What fun. Thank you. ❤️🤗
Коттедж напомнил мне серию из фильма про Дживса и Вустера. Обожаю Вудхауса!! Так мило , ничего лишнего, все на своих местах. Как всегда приятно посмотреть, и послушать вас❤❤❤❤❤
Thank you both so much for sharing your weekend with us all.Absolutely fascinating.Wonderful to see the Tor,loved the details about the land Girls chewing gum!xx
I remember that cupboard in our kitchen when I was a child! The pull down table and the glass fronted cupboard! The cooker looks familiar too- blimey am I that old? Just think my parents kept it all and it was built to last( Cornish ware too! ) The table!! 🏴🏴
I was born in1937 and remember very well the Anderson shelter in our garden and the earthy smell when we used it at night. Lovely video. Thank you both. X
I always find it so fascinating to be in spaces that have been preserved and frozen in time. And the personal items in the suitcases added to the whole experience. Thanks for taking us along.....!
Wonderful that the owners did such a great job in keeping a bit of history alive. I remember those rubber stick on shower attachment , despite growing up in the late 50s - 60s ….😘😘😘 Thanks for sharing it’s good for everyone to remember ❤️

The cottage tour was so interesting! What perfect timing for the 80th Anniversary of D-Day. Thank-you Land Girls for your service!
We should not forget but so glad that Britain and Germany are friends and close allies these days. I loved the cottage and almost could imagine the ladies of the land army shattered after a day on the land , relaxing by the fire in the cottage.
Thanks so much for your words!🙏
Absolutely agree.
Thrilled and delighted with this wonderful; step-back in History vlog
So wonderfully presented , thanks so much Joerg and Kirsten. ✍️

Another wonderful video, as always. Thanks so much!!
Another history lesson!!!! CANT WAIT!!!
Can’t wait to see you!
2 Land Girls definitely stayed there, the tin cottage was a lot smaller in the 40s, kitchen and bathroom were added.
We need to know about this book. If you don't publish it maybe you can spin some stories or narrarate it on your channel.
Thanks so much! Yes, it was great to visit Glastonbury, we always say 'live and let live', it what makes the world unique and colourful.
A beautiful tribute to young ladies who did their part during a difficult time. Loved the view from St Michael's near Glastonbury. My brief visit to England only allowed a drive through Glastonbury. Thank you for sharing!
Thanks so much!
I loved seeing the nurse's photos! thanks for taking a peek in there!
I love all your adventures and this one especially. So interesting. Thankyou
What a great anniversary of WWII place to go and share so much about the times
You always find the most interesting and unusual places to stay Kirsten and Joerg! xx
That truly was a walk down memory lane for so many. I remember smelling insence everywhere you went in Greenwich Village in New York. ❤ 😊
The old GEC oven ,the general electrical company .
Lovely old cupboards we had one back in the 60s.
Coucou, un séjour étonnant pour vous deux. Je vois que vous avez apprécié. A bientôt pour une autre jolie ville. Bises ❤❤❤
Wow… I felt ALL kinds of emotions watching this video. Some… very sad and teary… some very quirky and playful and some made me want to flash a ☮️ and ❤sign to mankind, 😊as I am a baby boomer.
I must say..
I Honor ALL the women, past and present, that sit in silence and do their
do diligence to help a (their) world in need,👍🏻 and Cheers to the accomplished female as Jane Austen often wrote about.
Big love and appreciation to you both!!!
Thank you so much! This is exactly how we felt staying at this amazing place.
Blessings.
Thank you so much - so so happy you like it!
Oh we don' even know what to say - we are glad he could save them and bring them to the countryside.
@@KirstenJoerg Thankyou. On the bright side my mum had a wonderful time in Lancashire and they were all safe 😊

An absolutely amazing cottage. A museum of sorts. Love it!!! The more you dig, the more you find. Oh, the view. Another wonderful video. Thank you!
Thank you so much Scott! It was so special - the nurse case really touched up deeply. Such a great place to stay.
