It's because compared to his Grandfather a literal Hero and legend of France, Charles Martel, he was a softy and remembered how harsh he was to him and probably tried his best to be a less frightening father and grandfather.
I’m bigger than Charlemagne was by a fair bit. He was large for his age, assuredly, but also not the largest man of his age by a long shot. Charlemagne was between 5’10”-6’3”. I’m 6’5” and the shortest man in my family.
This makes total sense to me. Instead of sending his daughters away to become Queens of other countries and having grandkids who he would never see. Instead, they stayed close to home, “married” local men, and Charlemagne could enjoy being around his grandchildren and extended family as much as he liked.
@@Thor-Orion Im sorry you’re not the favourite , he only let the favourite sees him get in touch with his feminine side. You must forgot our grandpa create French people.
For those of you congratulating charlamagne on good dynasty choices. The reasons he did this is 1. The Frankish tradition of inheritance from father to sons, is that all of the father’s holdings, land, titles, wealth, etc. is split sometimes evenly sometimes not that evenly but almost evenly. So almost always Frankish kings when they die leave a fragmented kingdom, most of the time. 2. Charlamagne knew he had enough trouble on his hands with successions with his actual sons, he didn’t need some random noble who marries one of his daughters to get a big head thinking their branch should be at the head. I was gunnah say more but I just got up and I can’t think straight 😂
He _did_ know how to read (Latin) though. He just couldn't manage writing. From what I've read, the people around him thought it was weird that he read _silently_ or without even moving his lips.
A similar thing happened to George III's daughters although he and his Queen wife went too far in not allowing them to marry at all even when they were on their 20's or 30's.
It’s interesting that Charlemagne didn’t let his daughters marry because he wanted to prevent his realm from dividing, yet the biggest reason for the fall of the Carolingian Empire is that his son divided the realm evenly among his own sons. Sometimes I imagine what would have been different if Charlemagne instituted primogeniture early.
I mean, this is kinda a bit okay, but at the same time problematic since it would put claims on lower classes and also nobles would riot since peasants are not considered as 'suitable'

Charlemagne knew how to avoid the 100 years war before the 100 years war
Imagine a man as towering and intimidating as Charlemagne playing hide and seek with his grandkids
What is ever stranger to us is that hide and seek was a game played by adults too in the Middle Ages. It was normal for adults to play games

On the other hand Charlie gave his daughters the best education and later in life they tried to help him to learn to write

Just marry them off to some peasants and give them exemption from taxes in exchange. Way easier.
Would be a disgrace to the nobles
