Joe’s story was one of the most interesting stories on Finding Your Roots. I think what was discovered on both sides of his family was surprising to him.
This was a very moving show. He is a very emotionally intelligent man and put his finger exactly on what he was feeling and what it meant to him, and to his family. Not italian at all, as I thought. I was expecting, like Dr. Gates said, to travel up his italian family tree. The story of what his Armenian grandmother went through, the mass murder of her family by the Turks, the loss of her 7 children, the liaison with a german officer who fathered a nazi. How he saw the dark irony of the connection immediately, both sides of a genocide. And then the freedom fighting for american independence that makes him a SAR (son of the american revolution.) Joe, man, that was some stirring history lesson. I really felt that for you and I'm glad you know now.
In many ways I sincerely feel that Dr. Gates is doing the Lord's work. I truly feel being able to connect to one's past is something that we all should strive for. Joe received a treasure with that photo of his ancestor.
Yes indeed - I’ve always said that there’s something profoundly spiritual to be able to connect with your past and so many others with genetic and documental genealogy. Dr. Gates is an inspiration
This was so moving❤. God bless the team at Finding Your Roots! The pain our ancestors experienced plays such an important role in shaping who we become. Rose, a survivor of the one of the biggest atrocities committed in recent history, has shaped Joe into the human being he is today by surviving and sharing her story with her descendants. May all those whose family histories sadly share horrible events like Joe’s ancestors find out about their plight and honor them, thanking them for their sacrifice. This episode brought tears to my eyes. My own maternal aunt was married to a gentleman whose family narrowly escaped the persecution of the Nazis, with only his mother and a few siblings able to arrive in the US. My cousins always honored their German Jewish family roots, and all of us remember and cherish our cousins by marriage, never forgetting their plight.

What I love the most is his truly affectionate reaction at learning this, his longing to visit his great-granddad's hometown, etc. This was the most heartwarming of it all. Of course, it would be even nicer to have more detailed info on each case, seeing him learn more about his other ancestors, the female ones and their amazing sagas as women in those even more troubled times when women had to fight even harder for their most basic rights.
I didn't know the details of his ancestry. But it makes sense now. He looks like an Armenian! Great picture of his relatives! You've done a great job finding his Great grandfather!

Love this show and all episodes, but this one was especially good. What a fascinating journey back in time, and Joe gets how profound it is that he was sitting in that chair at this point in time, a successful product of all those crazy twists and turns.
Hi am Mr joe’s manager, how are you doing? I noticed you are a fan of Mr Chesney, I just wanted to say thank you for all your support all throughout these years
I read up on it 20 years ago. Shocking stuff. I always find it baffling that the genocides and the African slave trades of the Ottomans and Arabs are always overlooked.
Funny, I first learned about the Armenian on because of Keeping up with the Kardashians. Apparently they still go there (unfilmed) because they have relatives there.
I’m a Sdsu student 20 almost 21 years old and an adoptee from Pakistan. I’ve taken an ancestry test but due to lack of information nothing has come up. It would bring me so much peace of you guys would consider looking into my case ❤ willing to be in it for the long run ❤️ love these videos so much bring me so much joy
Hello Alina, I’m a DNA Genealogist. I have some experience with Pakistani/Indian DNA. I would say that the databases are growing day by day. Not as great as Northern European origins. The only issue is the documentation. Remember Pakistan was created in 1947. I’ve had issues tracing records, birthdates incorrect. The people taking the tests don’t attach trees. Nothing is impossible. You can do many things from 1 dna test.
Hi Alina. We would like to thank you for your support of our community. We understand that it can be tough to progress on occasion and recognize why the assistance of an expert such as Dr. Gates would be of great support to any researcher. We're delighted that you've enjoyed this latest video and will do our best to help out in anyway we can. We're afraid that submissions for casting the next season of Finding Your Roots have recently closed. We hope you will have the opportunity to make a submission for consideration at a future date and are sorry for any disappointment. Currently, our test is not available for purchase in Pakistan so you may not yet see many close DNA matches from this country appear in your results. We're constantly broadening the availability of our test and have recently expanded to take in over 128 countries across the globe: support.ancestry.com/s/article/Countries-Where-AncestryDNA-is-Available?language=en_US. We hope that this can further expand in the future and stand ready to assist you in making the most of your current results should you ever feel like reaching out with any questions for our team. We wish you all the very best in achieving your goals. 🌳
I love seeing how happy people are when they learn about their roots and family. Ancestry helped me find my people, roots, and history. I mean I am who I am, but knowing where I came from is so comforting
This clip reinforces for me just how blessed am I to know, to KNOW, my family history. Yes, I look like I could be my great grandmother's twin, my grandma's twin & my mom's. No doubt in my mind my great-great grandmother, too. ♡
I’ve always wanted to know my family history. Dr. Henry Louis visited the region in Mexico where my family and I are from and did a documentary on the black culture of Mexico. Many of us would love to know more about our black ancestors and possibly all of those who mixed with us and find out more about who we are. I hope one day I can give this gift to my parents and tell them these are the people who made it possible for you to be here today ❤
Dr. Henry Louis truly is a gem. We love hearing about how he has inspired you to look even deeper into your ancestry. This would be such an incredible gift to your parents.
@@samanthab1923 Some resemblance but he also looks a lot like his Armenian ancestors - beautiful eyes. And possibly some of those African ancestors too... I recall they showed a photo of his father. He is certainly very striking looking!
@@piustwelfthso you’ve never seen Spider-Man, Spider-Man 3, the end credits of justice league, how I let your mother, and many other films and shows he’s done?
Joe, I did not know that you and I come from the same Armenian province mistakenly now called Harpoot. This is a turkified word with no meaning, but the true name was Karpert, which means stone fort. The people of Karpert played a big role in the silk trade between East and west. The people of Karpert are known for their literary and artistic brilliance, including William Saroyan and Peter Bakalian. I got goose bumps when I saw Harpoot, one of the most noble places of its time.
I knew my mother’s parents quite well, grew up knowing them, spending time with them, etc. But my father’s parents were just a photograph on an old secretary desk in the living room. I never knew them despite the fact that they didn’t die until i was in my 20s and 30s. It’s always frustrated me not knowing my father’s family since he died when I was so young and we only met them maybe once when I was a high school student. To this day, it’s always frustrated me that I know so little about one whole side of my family. And there are some enduring mysteries with my mother’s kinfolk, too, great silences about things we were not to be told. So my family tree is rife with mystery after mystery. Wish Dr. Gates could help me unravel so much hidden family history….
That was one of the most complicated and moving genealogy stories I've seen. As for Joe looking like his great-grandfather ... sorry, Joe. As soon as they put up the picture of your great-grandmother, I was like, "Oh, wow. He's got her eyes and cheekbones."
Hi @gloco620! Thanks so much for your interest! The article below will address what you can expect from Ancestry. Please let us know if you have any questions and we'd be happy to help! support.ancestry.com/s/article/Why-Use-Ancestry
I wish we have this in my country. I was told that on my mother's side alone, I have Chinese and Argentinian ancestry. I want to know more about my father's side, where the Lat family came from .
Great story. The resemblance is remarkable! A bit of humour caused by the subtitles. When he was told "You're a Beitinger", the subtitles came up with "You're biting her." ! LOL
I’m so happy for him. I know what his story feels like. I know my grandfather is Scandinavian and I know some of our ancestors 3-5 generations back but we don’t know exactly how or who exactly my American grandmother got with. She’s dead and my mom is dying and it’s the only thing I ever wanted to give her to heal her broken heart some.
Do they have full episodes of this? I would love to sit and watch. I saw him post about this on Instagram and was fascinated by it and seeing this got me wanting to know more.
There are full episodes on the PBS app, but only for this season unless payment is given to PBS. I imagine the full episodes are also shown on TV, but I don't know when.

Well, come to Heilbronn. You will find that one of your ancestors, a man named Emil Beutinger, is still quite famous. He was an architect and there are still quite a few buildings which he designed. He was also the mayor of Heilbronn before the 3rd Reich, the Nazis forced him out of office in 1933 and he fought against them the whole time. A very upstanding man, who became mayor again after 1945. There's even a street named after him (Beutinger Straße).
When I first started getting into genealogy it was definitely fun and interesting and a full on headache because some sides of the family had the brick walls that I couldn't get passed. Well when I started putting my little family tree together on ancestry I wanted more but unfortunately couldn't move past that brick wall. I honestly can't remember how I got help but I think I put it in ancestry message boards hoping for help and boy did I get help. With the DNA help I was finally able to fully find my mom dad's side of the family, found out she had Quakers on her dads side they moved around to avoid war. So I just wanna thank you to all the people out there that truly help people with the ancestry and help brake down that brick wall
Yes! My maternal grandfather’s first American ancestor was Jean L’Archeveque, from a Spanish noble family from France. Unless I went down the wrong branch or have misunderstood, we are related to King Henry IV of France. The American history to very exciting from what I can find. He was the 15 years old boy that was a decoy which caused the assassination of LaSalle, the explorer. After the Assassination he lived in hiding for two years with an Indian tribe. From then on he continued to explore before settling in the New Mexico territory. He became a successful entrepreneur . His death was on a battlefield. He left tons of descendants. I wish my Grandfather would have known that information.
Is there more to this episode or this was it? I could’ve sworn I saw a commercial when Joe goes into a story about his great grandmother who survived the Armenian Genocide.
He spoke about it a short while ago, then more recently he went into even more detail (because it was uncovered on this show). He had talked about wanting to know more, and he's mentioned his ancestress Rose before.
This is the first time I've ever felt that this was practiced before filming. He knew how to say both names with out a slight bit of error and the way he claimed the man in the picture looked like him.

Ok. I discovered another TH-cam gem aka channel I really like. Great work! I never would have thought there is a channel about something like this. Please keep going! I myself would really like to get to know more about my families past. I only know from my Dad-side Grandma that she has root in the lesser french nobles and my Mom told me that her Mum came from the Polish region called "Ostpreussen". (And yes, I am from Germany)
@@TenTenJ Hello my friend. The above commentator did not mean Armenians were Europeans, but an Indoeuropean group of people, Armenians share more genetics with southern Europeans, also some Jews than with Asians, for your knowledge Asia is mostly India, China, Japan, Taiwan, Thailand, Phillipnes, Pakistan, etc... Armenians are not Asian, and Armenia geographically is not in Asia, please educate yourself more.
When we found out who my dads real father was, and we exchanged a bunch of photos with his family, all of our jaws dropped. My dad is like a twin to all of his half brothers who all look just like their father. Even my brother looks like him. Its insane. I had my brother do both a Y DNA test and an autosomal DNA test. Because of that we learned so much about that line of our family. And it explains why we have way more Scottish DNA and way less Swedish DNA than we thought we would.
This was one of my favourite episodes ever. I really didn't know this guy to be honest. Extremely good looking, very masculine... o.k.... fine. But it was so interesting to learn some of his family's history and to watch his changing reactions. I actually identify with the guy a bit... having DNA from both victims and I guess victimizers. (By the way, the pronunciation of German names was quite a bit off. Not a big deal.)

Through DNA i discovered i was related as my 6th cousin Gen. Mariano Vallejo one of the early California pioneers when it was Mexico and when California became part of the U.S. He served as one of the first senators and helped write the first California constitution. And Vallejo CA. Named after him. Plus more.
My Paternal Great Grandparents were French Canadian. My Great Grandfather came down from Quebec on horseback across the country to Montana . He panned for gold along the way and trapped fur; but mostly he cane for the HomeStead Act. My Great GrandMother can there from Montreal by train with her brother and sister.
The interesting thing about reading old documents is the feeling that comes with it. It’s like nothing else! You could be looking at a page that someone actually wrote in the 1870s or whenever. It is definitely the feeling of being a time traveller, but it wasn’t until a few years ago that I had a “ricochet” time traveller moment. I was researching my early pioneer ancestors - Mormon pioneers (of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints). I was reading an old journal of a friend of my 2nd great grandfather. It recorded a meeting of my great great grandfather John Ashman being at the home of his friend Allen Russell, along with Ira Hinckley. I immediately recognized who Ira Hinckley was. This was that “ricochet” moment: There I was in the present day of 2005, looking at an 1870 journal page of the past - yet seeing into the future of who Ira Hinckley’s grandson would become: the President of the Church. Eery. I’m not sure if it’s called a ricochet moment or a boomerang one but it happens so fast it’s like getting whiplash. (Note: The dates above are estimated as the journal is not handy to verify dates.)

I watch, Finding Your Roots, every week and it's become my favourite show on tv. Tonight's show was truly exceptional! I was crying one moment, gasping in shock the next, to laughing with great joy. What a rollercoaster of emotion for all of us and I can't begin to imagine the emotions that Joe Manganiello and his family are experiencing. I also loved learning of his Armenian heritage, as far too.many people are not aware of this horrifuc period in history! Every show is entertaining and often times educational, but tonight was brilliant and I applaud the guests, Tony Gonzalaz and Joe Manganiello. Well done gentlemen.
BRILLIANT SHOW, thank you! (🇨🇦)
This was truly a powerful moment!
Great-granddad
@@JoshSweetvale Sorry, just corrected it:-), thanks for pointing it out!
I didn't know the details of his ancestry. But it makes sense now. He looks like an Armenian! Great picture of his relatives! You've done a great job finding his Great grandfather!

WOW!! So moving!! The Beutinger genes are STRONG in Joe!! DNA is amazing!!

Love this show and all episodes, but this one was especially good. What a fascinating journey back in time, and Joe gets how profound it is that he was sitting in that chair at this point in time, a successful product of all those crazy twists and turns.
Hi Susan, thanks for watching! We are happy to hear that you love Finding Your Roots.
Hi am Mr joe’s manager, how are you doing?
I noticed you are a fan of Mr Chesney, I just wanted to say thank you for all your support all throughout these years
I was so looking forward to this episode. I'm very happy for him to have uncovered his family story.
Hi JL, it's great to see that you are enjoying the show!
As an Armenian, I find it sad that so many commenters have never heard of the genocide. Pleased that this video has brought enlightenment.
I am a Jamaican immigrant and I know about the Armenian Genocide that Turkey tries to downplay. It will never be forgotten.
The inaccurate education offered to most Americans
I read up on it 20 years ago. Shocking stuff. I always find it baffling that the genocides and the African slave trades of the Ottomans and Arabs are always overlooked.
I am a black person who was raised in America and I know all about the atrocities against the Armenian people by the Turkish government.
Speaking as a Pakistani I can tell you about 99 percent of us don't take DNA tests
@Nicky L - what a condescending comment
@@bcent5758 - No, it wasn’t.
Hello Alina,
I’m a DNA Genealogist.
U are Mexican?? where from
2:52 That Picture 🤯. Its like he was time travelling.
As an Armenian I am interested in his Armenian great grandmother who survived the genocide. Where can I see the full episode?
PBS
On PBS.
Wonderful feeling when Armenian blood matters .
Yes what season and episode is it
I wonder what his distant German relatives would think about having an American movie star in the family? I think I would love it!
@Nicky L Good thing no one asked
I bet when he goes over to meet them he will find family members that look just like him.
@@samanthab1923 Some resemblance but he also looks a lot like his Armenian ancestors - beautiful eyes. And possibly some of those African ancestors too... I recall they showed a photo of his father. He is certainly very striking looking!
Never heard of him, and I'm a film buff.
Hi Miss Bubu! Thanks for stopping by. We hope you enjoyed this episode with Joe Manganiello! Thanks for sharing.
This is😊 one of the best ancestry stories ever.
I just watched this. So neat. He comes from so much on both sides. Loved his story and hx.
Joe really put it in an amazing way. It truly is awesome.
He looks so much like his ancestor. It's crazy
I watched this segment and it was very good. I would recommend it to others, very interesting.

I wish we have this in my country. I was told that on my mother's side alone, I have Chinese and Argentinian ancestry. I want to know more about my father's side, where the Lat family came from .
Elaine, I hope that one day you are successful in finding your family history. The Lat Family is waiting to be found.

Great story. The resemblance is remarkable!
A bit of humour caused by the subtitles. When he was told "You're a Beitinger", the subtitles came up with "You're biting her." ! LOL
We're glad you enjoyed the story featured in this video, thanks for stopping by and sharing your thoughts!
I’m obsessed with this website!
Maybe you could get your mom's DNA test now.

Wow, Love the familial resemblance ❤
We're so happy to hear that you were able to get past this brick wall and wish you the best of luck in all of your research to come!
@@AncestryUS thank you very much
Jo is a good looking man, as was his great-grandfather.
I love Armenians. I have never ever met an Armenian that I did not adore. The ladies are stunning. Plus naturally beautiful.

Beautiful, just amazingly beautiful
Joe is such a great guy. And a rpg gamer to boot :)
