    I really like that Colleen explained their parenting style. I know its a sensitive topic for a lot of people, but I personally agree with their type of parenting and I know that if I had been able to express my feelings as a child, it would have really helped me. Everyone is entitled to their own parenting style as long as their children are safe, but I love hearing people's thoughts on this and how other people parent - I think its so interesting and I personally like this take on parenting

    As a mother of two teenagers and a toddler, I chuckled when you said this stage the twins are in has to be the hardest. I did not enjoy the newborn/infant stage very much because it is super tough, but teenagers will rip your heart out and stomp on it with zero remorse. Ages 18 months-4 yrs old is the most fun. At least to me 🙃

      We are very confused and still discovering ourselves. If we come off as aggressive or rude we can be but usually I think we are just overwhelmed. If we have remorse after we are probably too embarrassed to tell you. We love you parents but it’s hard to show. All those good parents thank you and I love you! -Haileys Rant 2022

    I've always seen "gentle" parenting as treating children as whole humans. Like giving related consequences (if you draw on the wall, instead of being hit or yelled at, you have to clean up the wall). Explaining why you've said no to something and creating an understanding not just authoritarian I told you so style that relys on respect only going one way.

    • @bryannacloutier4018
      @bryannacloutier4018 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I agree

    • @kairisbeaumont
      @kairisbeaumont 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      I agree. That's the approach we take with our 3 and 1 year old toddlers. We respect them as people and acknowledge their emotions while teaching them appropriate ways to handle them. I've heard some people describe gentle parenting as having no boundaries, but that's not the case my experience. We have firm boundaries but consequences are explained and are naturally related to whatever misstep our kiddos have made.
      It's hard work and we definitely struggle sometimes. But I think that's important too, because then we can model how to handle that struggle 🤷‍♀️

  • @alyssasingleton7620
    @alyssasingleton7620 3 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    As a Pre-K teacher Y’all have an amazing outlook on parenting! Redirection is such a key “first step” for when a kid is doing something they probably shouldn’t be and or just when trying to teach them right from wrong. Honestly it works more often than most people think, and by implementing these practices early it teaches children how to process emotions and respond to situations in better ways! The way that you both consistently encourage communication is going to be such a key factor into the amazing human being he (and the twins) will become! Keep being the great humans y’all are!🖤

The amazingly relatable and funny songs remind me of Lyle Lovett or Marcia Ball or the tongue in cheek singers that are so talented. When life calms down, I beg of you to make an album I can buy. Colleeeeennnnn!!! A++ on your rationale for how you parent. Your instincts and insight are spot on, and reflect a lot of the research out there on child development. Also, it is not a coincidence that that parenting style “works for Flynn.” I would say that Flynn is in large part the way he is because of your parenting style, and your ability to understand his needs and respond to them accordingly, rather than react to him based on your needs and emotions 👌🏼 I have taught parenting classes for over 20 years and your natural ability to help your small humans develop is refreshing.

    I think the most important thing to do when you have a snap reaction to Flynn misbehaving, is to explain why you are reacting in a way you typically don't. Explaining that you are tired, or worried or stressed, and you made a mistake with the way you spoke to him, will help him understand that you all have moments that aren't perfect.

      And the vice-versa... living in a world where you care too much about everything and everybody's opinion and approval; that's not gonna help a kid much... it's good to be self sufficient and rely on yourself first and others second; it's something I had to learn in high school and it did me a world of good, cause it's true. Not everybody is gonna agree with you on everything and you can't go around doing things just to not piss off other people, if it happens to be the right thing for you, do it.

      Gentle parenting validates children's feelings because they are in a stage that their feelings need to be validated so they can form healthy attachments and have a secure sense of self. Also, your parents are not everyone, they are not the world, they are supposed to be your security net. Those children will grow and eventually understand that, and when they are faced with frustration they will know how to handle that in a healthier way and not filled with anxiety from not being secure in themselves.

    This is such an intresting episode. I'm not a parent but I'm an uncle that lives in the same house as my nephew and I've always been around since he was a new born and i can realate with the conversation of like trying to be as gentle as possible with them and helping them understand things and also express their feelings and emotions and i also agree with the fact that it's hard lol sometimes you are not in the greatest mood either but you still want them to have the best experience in life lol it's the hardest thing ever. I'm not a parent and i still worry so much about everything regarding him and i want his experience in life to be amazing. I'm not perfect but he still tells me I'm the best uncle ever. I can understand how you guys are having a tough time and there's gonna be a lot of changes and it's still gonna be crazy lol but you guys are doing great just get as much help as you can whenever you can and you'll get thru it. I think this is my favourite episode especially the part about parenting styles and the pressure on parents to always be role models for their children. I think it applies to relationships as well. There is so much talk about how to be respectful and work on being a healthy partner but at the end of the day we are human and we react as humans. As long as you are trying and forgiving yourself I think you're doing great as a parent, partner or whatever role it is.

    I know this is an old podcast but I’m watching now because I tend to miss videos and I just wanna say that I’m so wildly impressed that Colleen (and Erik for the podcast) find time to film/edit videos and the podcast. I know many “normal/everyday moms” that VALIDLY struggle with everyday life so to watch you guys balance all of this while raising 3 children is SO impressive to me. You guys don’t give yourself enough credit and I promise you’re doing AMAZING!❤️
    Gentle parenting is simply treating your tiny humans as HUMANS. Understanding that they’re literally learning how to life and like you said, all they know in THEIR little life is all that they know so anything that’s a big deal to them is valid because that’s literally ALL THEY KNOW.
    It must be SO hard to parent this way when your child is acting bratty but it’s so important to remember that they’re a human that doesn’t know how to express themselves and YOU’RE the one who’s supposed to teach them❤️
    You’re doing an incredible job.

    There are 4 main parenting styles: 1) authoritarian 2) authoritative (gentle parenting) 3)permission and 4)neglectful. # 2 has been shown to have the best outcomes in children and is about acceptance but boundaries. You have rules and expectations but you validate the child’s emotions while holding your boundaries

And that description doesn't do any justice to how awful it feels. It's those sweet beautiful moments with them when they aren't screaming crying that get you through. When Colleen talked about that it would be better if they knew when it was going to get easier the words "six months old" popped into my head, idk why but maybe it will get easier when they are 6 months old. It's important that we give ourselves grace in those moments when we surely will and have lost our cool. Reminding ourselves that gentle parenting and patience are our GOALS, but we are not perfect, is key.
    I am really glad you guys expressed this - I have a daughter that is exactly the same age as Flynn. Great video, so so funny and REAL! Ps it gets harder in mental terms as now you have control over the babies, but once they’re older and making their own way in life, and you see them hurting and you can’t fix it, and you see them doing things you know is not good but you’re powerless to change it, or you see their personality change and it’s not for the good, or you see destructive friends influencing them …. That’s when the pain inside your soul crushes you 24/7 because you realize that no matter how good of a parent you’ve been, all you’ve sacrificed for them (no regrets ever), and all you’re selflessly going to do to help them through things out of your control, you still cannot stop the pain, remove trauma, erase bad experiences, or fix their genetics you didn’t know mattered until it’s too late, it’s then that the pain sets in and there is no end in sight. I’d take the sleepless nights, post Partum breakdowns, and itchy butt cheeks from sitting on them all day long with two kids on me, because at least at that point real life hadn’t taken away my hopes and dreams for my children. Younger is easier. Enjoy your days with them as you’ll look back at these videos and give anything to go back to these days. You are so blessed. I love your videos and your beautiful family. ❤️

      @@kimjorvinhikes I wasn’t saying he not be with kids his age. And homeschooling methods were and are just as good as traditional schooling. I’ve always planned to homeschool my children, it has nothing to do with Covid. There are a lot of programs (sports, crafts, community theater, 4-H, etc) for socialization in homeschooled children. Society needs to remove the stigma that homeschooled kids are “weird” or “unsocialized” just because they didn’t go to a designated building to learn. My husband has ADHD and struggled with traditional schooling because it’s such a rigid environment with really no room for outliers in the curriculum, he ended up getting his GED and eventually getting into a trade. But he’s said that had unschooling been a thing 15yrs ago he would’ve liked to have learned that way.
