  • Learn how to create an #Arnold shader in #cinema4d inspired by Spider-Man: Into the Spider-verse.
Get the BEST Arnold #materials here - bit.ly/3WNPvRW
In this tutorial, you will learn about the techniques the animators used to create the film, and then follow along as we attempt to recreate this look in C4D with Arnold.
You'll see how to create a lambert utility to get a value of light to dark. Then you'll use that to create highlights, mid-tones, and shadows with their own half-tone patterns.

Great work and tutorial! One thing though, correct me if I'm wrong, but recently I tried to learn more about shaders, materials and textures, and from what I understood what you did is not a shader, but a material. A shader is the program that tells the render engine how to render an object and different shaders can control different aspects, such as Metalness, Transmission, Subsurface (eg. aiStandardSurface, aiAmbientOcclusion, aiCurvature - those are shaders and each do a different thing). But when you combine more shaders and/or add textures you create a material, is this right?

Keyboard Shortcut: To give the currently active node a connection to the Arnold Beauty input - Option/Alt - W - 1, but you have to let go of the Option/Alt key before typing 1 on your keypad otherwise it won't work. This has been driving me crazy for a week. (Yes, I'm that much of a noob)

Just make a custom render pass or AOV with a neutral shader override, and make sure that you also have a material ID cryptomatte or something similar, a ID pass.
Then you could do this in post using Fusion 9 (it free!).
Also, the Redshift devs are trying to make their render engine easier to understand in the future, so with a bit of patience, you might be able to jump into it in version 3.
I have been working with RS for over 2 years now, and it has been great, right now you can do more with it than in Octane even!

I tried by myself on MtoA (Arnold for Maya), and it's exactly the same way with the same nodes. No difference. I just used a remap hsv instead of the first ramp node after the aiUtility...

@@grimwingprime There isn't Arnold for Blender so you can't use the same nodes that in the tutorial. But what is important is the logic behind the process. I don't know Blender but I'm sure there are some nodes that can make the same things in Blender. Up to you to find them :)

Why not just make AOV's for direct lighting/shadows/etc, and do it in post with much more control and versatility?

To me its just bump map/normal map of the pattern ( or even rough map depends on the wanted behavior ) and interesting combination of reflectivity/roughness w/ some color falloff's something inbetween plastic and fabric w/ some masks for other elements.
Looks fairly easy to do. Try to make photorealistic vinyl record material, that thing is struggle, 3 days and no results imgur.com/a/7LGknjn :D
