Hello! I am glad that you finally made it to Cologne. The cathedral and the remains from the Roman times is really impressive for everyone. I hope you will have many more experiences like this in Germany!
Seeing my hometown (Cologne) through the eyes of a really lovely expat family! Realy touching! Keep on up, open minded, unbiased, positive and curious!
Lindt&Sprüngli, the Swiss company, is just partner of the chocolate museum founded by Hans Imhoff, longtime owner of the former Stollwerck chocolate company. The chocolate fountain was invented by Stollwerck/Imhoff.
You can go to a Ritter Sport shop in Berlin and even have your own chocolate made. You can choose some of all the ingredients, come back some hours later and take your „personal“ chocolate home.
2 pieces of information you might not have: In Germany there are only 19 skyscrapers (buildings with a height of 150 m or more). 18 are in Frankfurt and one in Bonn (the post tower 14:15). Haribo will soon open its first manufacturing facility in the United States (Pleasant Prairie, Wisconsin). Then the offer in the USA will probably be larger and cheaper.
Fun fact: The owner of the company later called 4711 was an employee at the company which actually invented the eau de cologne (first named aqua mirabilis/wonder water by its creator). Legend has it that the formula was given to him as a wedding present and he established his own company. Due to excellent marketing this one became a big brand, wheras the original is almost unknown. You can still visit the company "Farina" in the heart of the old town next to the Wallraff Richartz Museum.
What is certain, however, is that Wilhelm Mülhens had lived in Cologne's Glockengasse since 1797 and had been selling "Kölnisch Wasser" since 1799. The house in Glockengasse was assigned the house number '4711' at the time of the French occupation (Napoleon wars), which became the company's trademark in the 1830s. At first, the "aqua mirabilis" was not sold as a perfume, but as a remedy to be used internally. In 1810, however, Napoleon Bonaparte issued a decree that required the disclosure of all secret recipes for internally used remedies. From then on, in order to avoid the obligation to publish, Wilhelm Mülhens advertised his Cologne water as an “agent that can be used externally”, which meant that it was marketed for the first time as a scented water as we know it today. Even today's manufacturers consider it not just a fragrance, but also an "aroma therapeutic" to be inhaled "so the essential oils can work."
You can search for „Die Sendung mit dem Elefanten“ hier on YT. It’s the toddler version of the famous „Die Sendung mit der Maus“. My 2,5yo daughter looooves to watch it. We do have Sesame Street (Sesamstraße) in Germany as well and it is also well known. I’d consider Die Maus more educational (but yet also very entertaining) than Sesamstraße, to be honest.
Fun fact: I have grown up near cologne and I have never been to the roman museum as when I was in school every teacher said „Oh, you have been there a hundret times already“. Though I have been to all the other museums in cologne (and to most of them more than once or twice)
Wow...c'mon...Willa takes the scene all the time ;-)) This little human beiing steels the show every single video you made in the past view weeks. She is so cute and lovely...wow !! Nice to have you all here in germany.
I watch a lot of Sendung mit der Maus, especially the older ones without Herr Caspers who is a little bit much for me. (He makes the show PG13, imo.) Just yesterday in my medic Fortbildung "Funkgeraete" (the radios police/fire/rescuers use) they made us watch Die Maus episode about how cell phone base stations perform handovers when you use your cell phone between cells. Well done!
Your videos and vlogs are perfect for Sunday, very joyful and funny. It's a wonderful time to follow you visiting all these places and also giving everything a try and I really like that. Doing this together with your your lovely daughter is super cool. Bonn in total is a very nice city and of course Haribo is on top. Thanks for showing, have a nice week ☺️👍
If you are back in our region, you might think about paying a visit to Aachen, the reigningcity of Charlemagne and experience the wonderful city of Monschau. I highl recommend
Next time in Bonn, you should visit Beethoven's birth house. Just an fyi, the cacao content in European chocolate is 20% or higher, versus 10% in the U.S. ( i.e. Hersheys). European chocolate is also smoother and creamier. U.S. chocolate also contains butyric acid, to make it last longer on the shelves and gives it a slightly tangy flavor. As a side note, that butyric acid can also be found in vomit. Ever since I've heard about that, I can no longer eat U.S. chocolate. Next time you eat a Hershey chocolate, you will be able to tell. Luckily we have a German store nearby and if I have a hankering for chocolate, I get the German chocolate there.
It's always inspiring to see your excitement exploring Europe and to get to know your opinions. However the biggest smiles I get watching your talkative princess. For sure lasting memories and I'd love watching her watching and reacting to those videos lets say in 20 years from now... You were also so right about the 4711 parfume considering it smells like if it was nice back in the days when your grandma was a young girl. Would be interesting to know what kind / brand of parfume you & Tanner like to use if any.
Haribo is 500meters from where i grew up and still my mum's house is situated. In my youth we used to collect chestnuts and bring them to Haribo and got Haribo Sweets as exchange... the owner HAns RIegel from BOnn (HA RI BO) got a wildlife park near Bonn and needed the chestnuts for the deers... September was an important month... Bonn got others great sites and interesting history to see as it was the west german capital for decades. So if you ever meet your "Eifel-Friends" again, you should have a tour around Bonn and the Siebengebirge. Worthwhile. PS Drachenburg is an 19th century "new castle" and not very old, but still an interesting place to visit, though i prefer the view from the Drachenfels.
Haribo Porsche! Woooh! Back when they were running in the Nürburgring Langstrecken Series. It was nice, you could always get Gummi Bears in the Starting Grid of the VLN Races. Which are totaly awesome. Best Racing Series in Germany on the Famous Nordschleife in the Eifel Mountains.
I live near Siegen, it's between Frankfurt and Cologne, and yeah, I visited the museums and the dome of cologne several times on school trips, since it's only ~1hour by train to get there.
I lived close to Haribo in BN in the 90's. Then you could bring chestnuts to the store (a small thing then before they moved to Meckenheim) and trade them in for Haribo products.
I lived for 10 years in Cologne. Amazing city. Try finding aerial views of Cologne in 1945. You'll be shocked at the degree of devastation. I still to this day do not understand how the Germans rebuilt their country. Berlin, Hamburg and many other German cities and towns were razed to the ground by Allied bombing. When I first arrived in Cologne in 1969 there was still a lot of damage apparent from the war. Next time you visit Cologne, try the local speciality Eisbein mit Sauerkraut.
The "Maus" is made for kidds. So far, so true. But there was nearly no episode I watched with my kidds, on which I did not learn something as well. And if you talk to grownups: Every parent tells the same....
The Drachenburg Castle isn't very old. It was erected in the 1880s in the style of historicism. If you want to see the ruins of the old Drachenfels Castle from the 12th century, you must go higher up the hill. And if the weather is very clear, you can even see Cologne Cathedral from up there.
Next Time you can come back to Bonn and explore more... Bonn is the birthplace of Beethoven, the Headquarter of Deutsche Post and DHL is situated in Bonn. Bonn was the capital of West Germany and Germany after the Reunion of West and East Germany.

I hope you went to the "Kreutzblume" in front of the cathedral too which is humongus (10m, around 32 feet) which is a 1:1 replica of the top thingies which look soooo small and gives a whole other perspective of the scale of this monument
Yes i love Cologne such a beautiful city 😅 oh yes 4711 I don’t mind it Wow the Haribo factory now theres a place to visit & Chocolate factory 😋😋😋 It was Lovely to see you parents Tanner, that they got to travel with you all Such great memories made ❤️ Hope they had a Much beter trip back with out delays 🙏. Just came back from Cologne for an exhibition at the Cologne Fair. It was a nice relaxed city & I’m happy to see residents & not just tourists even in the city center. But not my favorite city to be honest. There’s really nothing else to see than the Cologne Cathedral & Hohenzollern Bridge. In terms of chocolate factory, I prefer the ones in Belgium. And for some reason, I had a hard time making friends with Germans. At first I thought maybe because I’m Asian? But when I went to Belgium, it’s totally different. Belgians are much friendlier. I don’t think it’s because of language barrier because both are bilingual in English. In terms of shopping district, I’ve seen a lot better in other cities in Europe. If it’s not because of the trade fair, I won’t be staying for 3 days. A day trip or an overnight stay would be enough for Cologne. But I enjoyed walking & biking around. But again, not as much when I did in Belgium (especially Ghent) & Amsterdam.
I live in Utah now, but lived in Bonn in 1967-70. My dad worked at the American embassy and we lived across the Rhine from Drachenfels. There was no factory outlet for Haribo then but that is where the factory is.
Greetings from Cologne! 👋🍻 The next time you come here, I'd recommend to visit the Rautenstrauch-Joest-Museum. It's a museum for cultural anthropology with a comparative perspective which has won several museum prices for its modern concept which is also attractive for kids with special offers. When you really want to visit a Brauhaus here, be aware that also the different sorts of Kölsch can taste very different - although many other Germans would call all of them tasting like cow's piss... 😉 As far as I know on the other side of the Rhine river in Köln-Kalk there is the oldest Kölsch-brewery (Sünner) with also a little nice beer garden. And besides beer they also sell different sorts of interesting self-destilled (hard) liquor... Btw the "chocolate factory" is a museum! 😉 A Lindt-factory is located in Aachen next to the border to the Netherlands and roundabout 75 kilometers away from Cologne, where they also sell to customers and Aachen is - despite its history - also a nice place to visit.
it´s funny how you associate the scent of 4711 with your grandma. It it totaly possible that it was around her house. Many older ladys i know where carrying a small bottle of 4711 around in their handbag. It´s the same for me as a man when i smell Old Spice or Irish Moss or Pitralon. These are the smells reminding me of my Grandfathers and i associate these scents with the good old times. But both of these Products have proven to stand the test of times as even we the younger generation know them and use them.
What many may not know is that probably the most well-known product of 4711 the "Kölnisch Wasser" is actually not a perfume at all. It is rather a refreshing "water". This fragrance I also know from childhood, where the "Kölnisch Wasser" was a daily used product in all walks of life. I love to cycle through Germany and Europe as a bikepacker and have rediscovered the 4711 Eau de Cologne for me. When the temperatures in the summer drives the sweat on my forehead, I take a paper handkerchief and wipe my face and neck with it. The refreshing effect comes immediately and works wonders the essential ingredients cool down. Another very good application is cleaning the hands when I'm on the road. Whether sticky fingers from the food intake or greasy hands from the bike chain. A little "cologne" in a paper towel and I can clean my hands without wasting my precious drinking water. For me, 4711 belongs since a few years necessarily in my luggage, just like back then with our parents😊
Funny that 4711 reminds you of your grandmother’s perfume. My grandmother actually used 4711 as her cologne and I therefore also associate the smell of it more with older people than with the younger generation. 😊 And after visiting the Haribo outlet you probably know more about the Haribo assortmentt than 90% of Germans. I never heard of those „Salzbrezeln“ from Haribo. 😉
I actually connect the smell of 4711 with my Granny, too. She would be 105 this year... But Old Spice (and I know that even some younger people than that use it) reminds me of old men, too...
Fun fact: The number, 4711, goes back to the time when Cologne was occupied by Napoleon's army. And they simply numbered all the houses of the city because it didn't have a particularly good address system. And the house where this perfume was made happened to get the number, 4711.
Hi there... what a beauiful video... When exactly have you been in Cologne ? I work in Cologne and would have loved to meet you there in person. Maybe next time ? Will you go back there and see some other things ? Cologne has a big zoo and the "Flora", a sort big flower garden, which are both worth spending some time in, especially for Willa, I think. Best wishes : Gerry
Well, you didn't really visit Bonn, did you? Drachenfels is very nice especially with hiking and with the old ruins on top - but thats a different town called Königswinter. Haribo Factory-Outlet is just a rectangular hall like a Walmart. You'll find those gummies cheap and in lange varieties all over Germany. I like gums and I live here but why should i go there? They even stopped that chestnut trading thing for kids... Bonn has sooo much to offer!
Great that you liked Cologne. I'm wondering what Brauhaus you meant - there are about 30 Brauhäuser throughout Cologne. The "Water of Cologne" (Kölnisch Wasser, Eau de Cologne) was invented by the French at the beginning of the 18th century, because it was quite smelly in the city. You only visited the Dom. Why not the other about 230 churches? 🤣
5 times ! in 2005 i went there you get just only one piece of choclate when you get in nothing more the entery fee was at that time i think between 3.50 euros
As a Cologne person, I wouldn't advise you to go to a brewery. To drink a beer, OK. But when it comes to food, there are better places to go. Often the service is not so good or even grumpy/unfriendly. They can afford it. If you ever come back, let me know and I'll put something together for you or show you in person. There are great things to discover - for the big ones and the little ones ;o) Warm greetings
Eau de Cologne - Echt Kölnisch Wasser ... Could be just a brand name, but when it has a city name in it ... What about Nürnberger Lebkuchen, Frankfurter Würstchen, Leipziger Allerlei, Nürnberger Rostbratwürstchen, Kasseler mit Sauerkraut, Lübecker Marzipan, die Bremer Stadtmusikanten, ... ??
Can someone tell me if Haribo makes a sugar-free variety in Germany? I can only seem to find it in America but unfortunately I live in Germany, and .....about 20 minutes from Solingen. Why does America have sugar free Haribo, and when I go to Aldi, it's all sugar-full?
I read about the sugar-free variety in the internet. Most likely Haribo is not allowed to sell the sugar free gummies in the EU because the stuff they use instead of sugar is most likely forbidden in large scales in the EU
Cologne unfortunately isn't much of a pretty city at all (first severely destroyed during World War II, then rebuilt the most "unpretentious" way imaginable). And yet there are more hymns to Cologne than to any other city- Cologne's charme lies mainly in its cheerul, tolerant, open-minded and friendly mentality. Cologners are probably the most laid-back and also chattiest people in Germany
Cologne Cathedral was also for a few years the highest building on the planet. Impressive are also the big bells. With one of the largest free-swinging bells. Albeit this one rings only a few times a year. th-cam.com/video/jbtqJWZT_EI/w-d-xo.html
@@OurStorytoTell It's really difficult to record the *real* sound. Albeit 10 years old the sound recording of the below video is better. th-cam.com/video/6Znn5eZBlXU/w-d-xo.html I also like the sound of the 2nd largest bell "Pretiosa" (the precious) very much. Even more amazing - this bell is from 1448.
I can't understand that, it's a mess, the traffic is always jammed and the chance to get in a wrong direction is pretty big and then getting back on track will take some time. The wörst thing in Koln is that you don't get a real beer there. Only p... water in a test tube. 🤢
It doesn’t surprise me that the usa didn’t make the top 10 in the chocolate consumption ranking. Most of usa’s so called chocolate like Hershey’s isn’t real chocolate at all
Yea way better. The lower rhine area is the best and you get the best beer in the world 😎 except the best of the best comes from Korschenbroich, a small city right next to Mönchengladbach - home of the famous soccer club Borussia or 'A German Team' some castles (one has wild peacocks in the castle's garden) and one of the most important contemporary art museums. So you have to take a small trip to the left rhine side.
American chocolate tastes sour. But European chocolate is sweet. Americans use cheap sour changed milk for their chocolate, in Europe good milk and expensive raw materials are used. It has to do with the raw milk laws in US. Maybe American chocolate is cheaper to produce than European chocolate, but because European chocolate tastes better, we can pay a price and eat more of it. The German factory was "Stollwerck". A little later, when the museum was founded, the company was sold. The museum was already separated from the company and remained.
Cologne Cathedral has a secret. The construction site was not finished for a long time due to lack of funds. Until then, in the 1900s, money could finally be raised again. But by then the original builders were all dead. So the Cologne Cathedral got an iron roof truss. But this one is hidden. The cathedral will never be finished. Whenever the repairs around are finished, it starts all over again.
After the war, the WDR station started again as the 2nd channel of the NWDR with a British broadcasting license. The NWDR supplied Lower Saxony, North Rhine-Westphalia and Berlin. When it was possible, the NWDR was split into NDR (Lower Saxony and later Mecklenburg-West Pomerania), WDR (North Rhine-Westphalia) and SFB (Broatcast free Berlin). The SFB later became the RBB (Berlin Brandenburg). The WDR produces 11 local programs daily, which deviate from the main program for one hour. In addition to the local programs, the WDR is involved in the main program "Das Erste". Own films are produced too. It not only produces radio, television and internet but also organizes music events of all kinds. The WDR has its own satellite uplink and is no longer dependent on the uplink in Luxembourg.
4711, this number was assigned by French soldiers to the house of the perfumery. A brand today. But don't confuse that with 0815. DIN 0815, the usually rifle of the Germans in WW1. Today Usually is called 0815
The little one's reaction at Haribo outlet is just cuteness overload!
She was in gummy heaven!
The Chocolate museum was originally part of the Cologne Chocolate company "Stollwerck", but the company was sold and the museum partnered with Lindt.

I live in Utah now, but lived in Bonn in 1967-70. My dad worked at the American embassy and we lived across the Rhine from Drachenfels. There was no factory outlet for Haribo then but that is where the factory is.
Ahh we came from Utah so it’s fun to read you’re there now! What part of Utah? Living by the Rhine would be so incredible! Beautiful area. 😍
I live in Centerville (next to Bountiful). I think you mentioned you’re from the Tremonton area(?)
Greetings from Cologne! 👋🍻
The next time you come here, I'd recommend to visit the Rautenstrauch-Joest-Museum.
As far as I know on the other side of the Rhine river in Köln-Kalk there is the oldest Kölsch-brewery (Sünner) with also a little nice beer garden.
Thanks so much for the comment! Fun to learn more about it and receive new recommendations! 😊
it´s funny how you associate the scent of 4711 with your grandma. But both of these Products have proven to stand the test of times as even we the younger generation know them and use them.
hahaha Willa loves her gummies. Haribo looked so fun!
Bahlsen Outlet in Hannover also offers Ritter Sport chocolate
I think 4711 was the postcode where that perfume company was located back in the day (before the 5 digit postcodes were introduced in 1993)
Ahhh I know exactly where you’re at ❤ I miss Wurzburg and the Rhein ❤
To me the best part of this video is your daughter saying “ mmmm gummies” and her biting different gummies and offering dad some.
We love that part too!!
I'm glad you visited Königswinter and Schloss Drachenburg, you should have said it before, i would have waved you from the city
:D
Funny that 4711 reminds you of your grandmother’s perfume. My grandmother actually used 4711 as her cologne and I therefore also associate the smell of it more with older people than with the younger generation. 😊 And after visiting the Haribo outlet you probably know more about the Haribo assortmentt than 90% of Germans. I never heard of those „Salzbrezeln“ from Haribo. 😉
Salzbrezel gibt es wohl vor allem in Norddeutschland, # Lakritz- Äquator.
I work close to the Haribo store, very tempting! :-)
Oh we can imagine! 😊
now i want a "gummy".😊
I actually connect the smell of 4711 with my Granny, too. She would be 105 this year... But Old Spice (and I know that even some younger people than that use it) reminds me of old men, too...
I think while visting Haribo, Willa was in 7. heaven🤣Very nice video.
Beautiful sharing 💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕
I just went to a wedding on Drachenburg Castle and it´s amazing
We can imagine 😍
Yeah "eau de cologne" comes from the name of the german city like Hamburger comes from the name of the northern city ...
Finally Siebengebirge!
How did you manage to get Willa to leave Haribo again ?
the kölner dom is still in construction it never ends , technically it's been more than 600 years in the building
Fun fact: The number, 4711, goes back to the time when Cologne was occupied by Napoleon's army. And they simply numbered all the houses of the city because it didn't have a particularly good address system. And the house where this perfume was made happened to get the number, 4711.
Wow that really is a fun fact and cool you know that! Thanks for sharing 😊
Hi there... what a beauiful video...
Stollwerck Schokoladenfabrik used to be in Cologne before
Well, you didn't really visit Bonn, did you?
Drachenfels is very nice especially with hiking and with the old ruins on top
- but thats a different town called Königswinter.
Love the videos!!
Nice Video as always, BUT... you missed sooo much in the Cologne-Bonn-Rhinevalley Aera! You HAVE to come back with a bit more time.
We agree we HAVE to ☺️😉
Haribo has been running a campaign during the autumn holidays for decades, where children can exchange chestnuts (10:1) and acorns (5:1) for Haribo.
Home is, where the dome is. 🙂
So fun you live there!
YEAH! #Würzburg!!! My vafourite city! I went to university there. ❤
Welcome in Germany 🇩🇪🇩🇪🇩🇪
Hey thanks!! 🥰
5 times ! in 2005 i went there you get just only one piece of choclate when you get in nothing more the entery fee was at that time i think between 3.50 euros
Most Lindt's international products are created in Aachen
Welcome to my hometown 😉
Woohoo!! 💗
Another famous German number is 0815 😀 „Null-Acht-Fünfzehn“.
In my home town there is a Lindt factory and I'm a official Lindt chocolate tester 😁
That sounds like the best job 😋😋
Kölle Alaaf 🎉
Koblenz is beautiful
wasn´t there with school. i was in Trier isn´t that far from my Place and also 2000 yo
Visit the fashion Capitol of Germany Düsseldorf and it’s neighbouring City Neuss.worth a Trip
I swear you brought the bad weather to Cologne and Bonn 😅
Oh no 😂😅 Hopefully you get some sunshine soon!
What was the restaurant called you visited in Köln?
Rich’N Greens 🥬

Thanks - I'm gonna check it out.
Did you know that there are figures of soccer players at Cologne Cathedral?
No way! We had no idea. We spent some time looking at the figures, but didn’t recognize any of them!
In Kasseler sind Kasseler?!?! 😱😱😱
If your kid would have shouted " My precious!" Everyone could relate 😂
They're still undecided on who did more damage to the town. WWII or the architects that (re)built the city ;)
Cologne Cathedral was also for a few years the highest building on the planet.
Impressive are also the big bells. With one of the largest free-swinging bells. Albeit this one rings only a few times a year.
th-cam.com/video/jbtqJWZT_EI/w-d-xo.html
Super impressive!!
@@OurStorytoTell It's really difficult to record the *real* sound. Albeit 10 years old the sound recording of the below video is better.
th-cam.com/video/6Znn5eZBlXU/w-d-xo.html
I also like the sound of the 2nd largest bell "Pretiosa" (the precious) very much. Even more amazing - this bell is from 1448.
Wow Köln is my fav.city here in West germany
I can't understand that, it's a mess, the traffic is always jammed and the chance to get in a wrong direction is pretty big and then getting back on track will take some time.
The wörst thing in Koln is that you don't get a real beer there. Only p... water in a test tube. 🤢
3:27: Interestingly, all 13 top places were European countries.
It doesn’t surprise me that the usa didn’t make the top 10 in the chocolate consumption ranking. Most of usa’s so called chocolate like Hershey’s isn’t real chocolate at all
Yes, definitely no surprise there!
Next time come to Düsseldorf!
We’ll have to make another trip! There is so much to see in the area!
Haribo factory sale stores are deadly 😅
7:58: If you want REAL Eau de Cologne, you go to Farina, not to 4711.
A pity Willa's grandparents were not included in this one, only an occasional backside view.
What a shame that you do not consider the birthplace of Ludwig van Beethoven the most iconic site Bonn has to offer... 😪
4711 riecht wie alte Frau unter´m Arm. xD
