    It sucks that even 10 months after this they still had health problems, but apparently according to his LinkedIn, Don Brooks served with the Prairie Village Police until 1998 then joined the Westwood Kansas police where he retired as Assistant Chief of Police.
    Edit: A newspaper article talking about the reenactment said the incident happened when a construction crew fixing a broken pipe the day before had placed some plastic sheets on the walls to prevent sheetrock from flying everywhere but the sheets also ended up blocking the air vents causing massive amounts of carbon monoxide to build up.

    • @RockandrollNegro
      @RockandrollNegro 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I'm not saying that this is what the family did, but if there was a negligent construction company that caused my family to nearly die, I'd also be having "recurring health issues" until the lawsuit payout checks started coming.

    We are all fortunate to live in a time where carbon monoxide detectors can be purchased for a decent price. There is not a rational reason why every home should not have at least one... along with smoke/fire detectors- the kind that do *not* hook into the house wiring, but rather run on batteries. We test all of ours on the same day once a month, and change all of the batteries on the same day every single year... no matter if the batteries still have power (use batteries that still have power in children's toys or other non-important devices). There is not a price that you can put on life, it is as simple as that. Additionally, a lot of people are unaware that there are places that carbon monoxide can leach out of the ground into your home. You can't see it. You can't smell it. If you have symptoms they may be simple headaches or feeling like a cold or flu. *The Silent Killer.*
    Our family, especially our son, was saved from death by carbon monoxide poisoning. We had had remodeling done on our house for several months and we were so glad when it was over. What we didn't know until it was too late, was that the contractor had *covered* and sheet-rocked the fresh air vent from our downstairs water heater- the guy even removed the metal pipe that ran from the heater to the outside! It took a while for it to build up in the house, but build up it did, and the downstairs detector finally went off (the same day I had just been released from the hospital after a lengthy stay- I still had my medical bracelets on my wrist!) My son had dangerous levels in his blood since his room was right next to where the water heater was, but fortunately, he only had to stay overnight for observation and treatment. The rest of the family were allowed to go home after blood-work... and once the fire department had shut down the water heater and aired the house until the readings were normal.
    The carelessness of a contractor could have cost our entire family their lives. We forced them to come and repair/replace what they had done, made them pay for a *different* and independent inspector from the man who had "cleared" their work the first time, and reported them all to the BBB. We could have sued them, but we were fortunate that our medical insurance covered our medical costs, and they went out of business later that year in any case.
    Our family of 8 was saved by a $25 device. Please protect yourself and your family from both the "silent killer" and the deadly smoke and fire that claim hundreds of lives every year! Especially if you have anything in your home that uses natural gas or propane, or live in an area where it is in the ground, please get at least one detector- placed low to the ground near where each gas powered unit is located. And *no* home should ever be without multiple smoke/fire detectors that are *not* wired into the home. ~Peace!

    am currently in college to become an HVAC tech and when we were going over carbon monoxide prevention with furnaces it made me search for this episode. I wonder if they had this. Apparently during the 80's in order to boost the efficiency of the furnace there were devices that closed off the chimney when there was no CO being made. The problem with these devices though is that they got clogged, jammed, rusted... shut preventing the gas from exiting through the chimney and therefore being trapped inside of the house. That is my best guess of what happened here with them saying it was caused by improper furnace venting. The device is called an automatic vent damper if you want to look it up. It is a very dangerous invention and we are instructed that if we ever find one still in use to remove it asap and if we don't have the proper tools to do so to drill venting holes through them. I don't think it is national code yet, but at least in NY where I live it is illegal to have any type of device that clogs the chimney from venting for obvious reasons.

    • @oldhandyluke

      With any type of open flue with or without a vent damper, a rollout switch is a must.

    I got a taste of it when I worked at a Taco Bell store at 18. We heated up the meat in boiler bags. Newer stores have a device called a rethermalizer to heat them up, but the older ones just had two pots on a gas burner. Our store was an older one. That day they didn't turn the exhaust fan on and because it was lunch rush they had both pots going full blast. They likely also used the fryer earlier with it off. I felt fine when I arrived, but within 10 minutes I started getting a headache, feeling nauseous and seeing spots. I turned the fan on, but still felt bad. The store manager told me to go out in the dining room for a little while. I didn't feel any better and left. Within a few minutes of leaving the store I felt much better. I still had a bad headache though. I was the only one that felt sick, but I'm sure that was what it was from. No telling what would have happen if I didn't turn that fan on though.

    I'd never heard of CO2 poisoning until I saw the episode the victim referred to. The demand for monitors definitely went up after that show. In no time, you could buy them almost anywhere. Like the officer said, he'd never seen survivors. It's a silent killer, like smoke, and you are helpless without an alarm. This series had families glued to their TV on Friday nights, and it saved countless lives.

    It’s amazing to think that if two oxygen atoms are connected we can breathe it normally, but if it’s a single oxygen atom, it grabs onto a carbon atom and becomes deadly. When you breath carbon monoxide, it gets sucked down to where normal oxygen is pumped into your blood and it starts to replace the oxygen. Keep in mind how important oxygen is to blood health. These folks were lucky.

      It's carbon monoxide not bacteria!

      Michael Weinert please educate yourself... you can't just clean it up like bacteria. It's a gas that displaces oxygen and makes you suffocate because your body can't take in the oxygen necessary. lysol or soapy water would do nothing.

    Back when I used to go to high school there was a room that the teacher they went there was usually nice well hes Well hes sick so hes off for the day so he has a substitute and this substitute was basically like the male version of piggy from king of the hill Well anyways there was one of those leaks and 2 girls went out And then 2 other people went out and the last 3 girls plus me plus my para he actually blocks the doorway And says nobody's leaving unless I approve it I'm looking at my parents we're both get aint really tired and I tell him move or you're being moved he was wondering right you up for threatening a teacher as I do it I said I'd rather spend a week or a month in detention did ever spend my whole life underground because you're having an eagle trip my para looked right at him and said and I'll back him up 01 of the girls calls her parents and says mom I might be spending some time at home indeed in AIS S Her mom said well why and she has her on because we're getting tired of the carbon monoxide leak and the teachers block in the doorway this mom literally goes baby girl we will deal with your detention if you get it either get past him or move him I'm not losing my baby girl for no teacher That's lost in the 1800s
