Another word of advice: One of my favorite clients is one that I bagged on my own. There's a podcast I enjoy listening to. So I transcribed ten minutes of their audio. I made sure it was letter perfect. Sent it to them with a pitch letter. And they hired me for a penny a word. They had a huge backlog of work, too. I've been working for them for over a decade now.
Thanks for this video, I was considering trying these websites a few days ago and decided it was not worth my time. Now i see this video and im glad I didn't spend hours on that.
Long-time professional here. I do make $4-5K/month. I've worked in law firms for many years, and type 120 wpm. My advice: Avoid anyone paying by the audio hour. Those are the lowest-paying overall and never worth it. Second worst are paid by the word. A penny a word is okay if it's verbatim. Best of all is taking an AAERT-approved training and working in AAERT pleading format, meaning working for court reporters. That's a standard, line-numbered page which is double spaced and pays around $1.50/page. When you're doing general transcription paid by the audio hour, it could be literally anything and you have to type it for a standard rate. That's a worst-case scenario for the transcriber. However, be mindful that you can and should use Word's built-in AI "transcription" tool to render speech-to-text and clean the material up rather than actually typing it. If you're a non-native speaker of English, or in a different country, consider doing legal transcription for the court system in your own language/country as well. Someone does this job everywhere. Go forth and prosper.
I got laid off as a medical transcriptionist (union university job with good pay and benefits). While unemployed, I tried doing some freelance transcription, but the pay structure was too demoralizing. You’re paid a pitiful amount for your time and effort, and the approach of these companies is incredibly micromanaging and punitive. Many other companies that used to employ transcriptionists have laid them off, and it’s a shrinking profession according to the bureau of labor statistics. I have used my experience to gain a job in a similar field, also a governmental clerical position. It is too bad because skilled transcriptionists can do good work, while automated transcribing programs may be prone to a lot of errors. It was really tough being laid off, but in a way I am glad not to have to listen to listen to people’s voices right in my ears anymore. Some of them were annoying, and I have misophonia!
We had the same transcription company for our medical office for almost ten years and then all of a sudden, the work was coming back horrible and taking much longer, and nobody would respond to our issues so we switched to another company recently,. Well they get the work back quickly but multiple mistakes and it's like they dont even know medical terminology! It's very frustrating as I feel some of the people they are giving our work to are not qualified. Some of the simple medical words are butchered, and my doctor speaks very clear... I am going to try to watch your video on how to possibly do it myself due to these issues. I am also not alone in my surrounding area.
Hello! Although I am not from a company but I am a student who really wants a transcription job! I find it really fun and interesting and I assure you I will complete my tasks in the required time. You can test my skills!
I'm gonna be honest I was just looking for transcription reviews [just came from your WayWithWords review] but I got so much more in terms of clarity and an honest picture and that's the quickest I've subscribed lmao. I just wanted to express appreciation for it because it's so rare to get an actual look at the current state of things, people being vague or having money ties, and you're laying it out for people - internationally, even, which is harder to find - so just. Thanks lol. For an actually succinct TH-cam video. I'll be rerouting some career ideas and checking out other videos because of it.
Thank you so much for your comment! I really try my best to post videos that are as authentic as possible and comments like this make it all worthwhile. ❤️
I’m so glad to have found your channel after doing my AI research. I’ve been wanting to become a transcription but with AI things have changed. I’ve read medical transcription is a dying field. Your video was very informative and helpful!
Yeah, thanks to AI, jobs have been very few at Scribie, and it made major changes to their processes since last year. Scribie typically follows a four-step process: transcription, review, proofreading, and quality check. I was one of those fortunate ones who managed to get accepted two years ago and crawled their way up to QC level, so I still get something to work on every day. I don't know what's going to happen to us in the future as AI becomes more advanced.
Jennifer Marie, yours is one of the less than a handful of channels about online work that I deem to be honest. I got some private client work last week from someone I used to do a considerable amount of work for pre-pandemic but now it's sporadic. Although I'm experienced at transcription I think I need to practise a bit because I broke my wrist last year and think my speed may have decreased. Off topic, would you ever do a video about SEO optimisation (if you've already done one I'm missing it somehow)?
300 million jobs are estimated to be lost to AI according to recent research by Goldman Sachs, over 11 Million in the United States alone. This is why it will be so important for Universal Basic Income to be introduced. Tax the big corporations making billions accordingly and use the Taxes to pay UBI.
Ive been transcribing since 2018. AI has definitely affected the industry. I think the only saving grace that I have for the moment is that most of the work I do is bilingual or French (Im from Canada, with contracts for government ministries that requires transcription to be bilingual), but as AI improves and can handle switches from French to English and back multiple times in a speech, then i suspect the field is definitely on its way out, sadly.
Thanks so much for sharing your insights and experience with us! The only hope is that there will be a greater demand for transcript editors or AI editors/editing AI-generated transcription.
@@JenniferMarieVO you're welcome! With the speech to text tools that are available to us now, I do a lot more editing than actual typing these days, other than to insert the French. @@JenniferMarieVO 😊 I’m just telling the truth! To be honest with you, I really want to find a part time online job. Do you have any videos talking about this issue? Or, maybe, any suggestions? Many thanks!

Hey. I have been trying to reduce the length of the subtitles as the characters generated by whisper can be overwhelming, ranging between 12 - 18 words in a single caption.
