This is easily one of the most dramatic and excellent piece of music ever written for orchestra and chorus. Funny enough the Libera me was written first as it was initially meant to be one part of a collaborative requiem written by many composers as a tribute to Rossini when he passed in 1868. Unfortunately the project fell through and was never performed as intended. Verdi held on to this piece however, and when Italian writer Alessandro Manzoni, whom Verdi highly admired, passed in 1873, Verdi decided he had to complete a full requiem in his honor. It was premiered on the one year anniversary of Manzoni’s death in Milan on May 22nd 1874. I hope you enjoy!
