How to Select a Sprayer-Too Big Can be Dangerous!!!

  • Today we continue our series about buying sprayers and the topic is matching the size of the sprayer, in other words, how many gallons it hold, with the vehicle that will be carrying it. There are a lot of choices out there, you can get a hand sprayer, one that goes on your four-wheeler, one that attaches to the tractor three point, a pull-behind, or one that goes in the tailgate of your pickup truck. While the tendency is to get the biggest one you can so you don't have to run back and forth to the field, that can have some real dangerous consequences.
For example, a three point 200 gallon sprayer can weigh up to 350 pounds. Fill it full of water, at 8 lbs a gallon and you're bumping up against 2000 pounds of weight. That might be fine on a small tractor on flat ground, but get on hills and you have a recipe for disaster.
Having said that, if you get too small a sprayer you're spending all of your time running back and forth to the water source and waiting patently for the hose to fill the tank. It's not the way most of us want to spend our weekend.
So, today we try to give you some ideas about what type of sprayer to select, and how big a tank you need to balance safety and productivity.
Future videos will deal with boom options and the many different other options that are important to consider and can have a drastic impact on the price you pay. Some of them are very worth having. Stay tuned...

More excellent advice on the sprayers. Thanks for posting it. I like how you've gone to an expert on the subject to what might work best for someone's application of the sprayer in this series of videos. I had to chuckle when you used the "Pucker Factor" term, that term fits so many situations. Stay safe.

    Hey Mike,
I have learned so much from you since I purchased my Mahindra 2565 a year ago this past January. I have watched every video you have on TH-cam. I am having a hard time getting my spray coverage figure out correctly. I was wondering since you have a sprayer expert, maybe you could do a video on how much chemical to add to a spray & how to figure what your ground speed should be to obtain the desired coverage. Thanks for all you do for us newbie tractor owners!

I have to use a 3-pt sprayer because I have limited turning space at the end of my rows. This is a good video regarding weight and safety, and I'd appreciate it if you'd talk about what you do and don't know about machinery in orchards. It's a different operating environment, and sprayer requirements are a lot different. For example, cheap spray wands won't accept different spray nozzles (TeeJet et al). I have to calibrate my wand just as much as I would a fogger. Booms are useless (for me) in an orchard.

Alan, I grew up on an orchard and you do need an entirely different set up than shown in the video. We had a 400 gallon tow-behind FMC misting sprayer with a big fan on the back to blow the material up in the tree. Looked just like this one: bidcal.hibid.com/lot/25927-30142-24338/fmc-pto-orchard-sprayer/. There are probably specialty sprayer manufacturers out there who offer these machines, that's a little out of my realm now. Check this guy's TH-cam out, he's local and talks about apples: th-cam.com/channels/XAVK_K_O7eJCHAZXlpCf9w.html

I am very interested in sprayers but I am looking at orchard sprayers. What kind do I need. I will be starting with 7 acres but hoping to expand in the future to over 25 acres. I have a Mahindra 6075 CL with a cab which is a 75 HP tractor. I am in Indiana and most likely will be planting apples and maybe pears or nectarines. Any information tips and instructions would be amazing. I am new to all of this so I am just starting to wade into the pool of tractors and implements. Thank you.

I've always felt the sunglasses are a little inconsiderate when talking to someone.

Mike another good video. Is there a standard rule of thumb on size of sprayers versus size of a compact tractor. Inherited a 65 gal 3 point sprayer and a Deutz-allis tractor 5220 Hydro.

    • @TractorMike
      @TractorMike  6 ปีที่แล้ว

First, I'd calculate the weight of the sprayer with the water and material and see if it exceeded the capacity of your tractor. TractorData.com is a great place to look, here's the page to your model specs: www.tractordata.com/farm-tractors/003/1/6/3160-deutz-allis-5220.html. Now, BE CAREFUL...you have to factor in whether or not you're going up and down hills, what condition the brakes are in, whether the tractor has front weights or a loader, etc. So, no, there's not a standard rule of thumb. If you get a lot of water in there and head out on a steep hill and the brakes are shot and you have no ballast anywhere you could get in a lot of trouble quickly.

    Will a 45 hp work on a pull type 200 gallon or a 3 pt cat 1tractor

You can pull a much bigger tank on a trailer than you can carry on a 3 point...
Then the trailer design and the tow capacity of the tractor matter more than the potential issue of unbalancing the tractor. Too many variables have been brought in when you bring up a trailer version.

Electric or PTO pump if you had the choice?

PTO. You can also get hydraulic pumps on many models, but most everyone prefers the consistency of the PTO versus other options.

I've been thinking about getting one for my 40 hp New Holland. Which brands do you suggest for a 3 point pto driven in that size? I run this tractor in addition to my dozer as my business so it will be use semi commercially.

Also thanks for the help on the proper tire psi you helped me with about a year ago. It a huge ease on my mind knowing I have my tires aired up right on some of the terrain I run on.

I've had personal experience with Ag Spray and Wylie and they're good, I think Hardy and Fimco's are good but I have no experience with either. Honestly, I'm not sure there's that much difference in the brands. Do make sure you invest in a good pump. Cheaper sprayers will have cast iron pumps, get a ni-cast or silver-cast pump. We'll cover that next Thursday.

Thanks for the information. I'll do some digging into those brands and see which one suits me. I'll definitely be watching that next video before making any decisions.
