My favorite thing about Minotaur is that they automatically succeed on a dc20 int save to escape the effects of the 8th lvl spell Maze (along with goristro)

I think it was done to a great extend on the web comic 'Looking For A Group'. One the main cast is a minotaur who didn't like fighting and bashing his skull against other minotaur skulls. He in fact liked books and gained spell casting abilities, even rased a wizardly orc girl as a daughter.
Okay so, something I want to point out; The old Minotaur UA had them be really cool n' all, and made them care about Strength in some field such as physical, mental, or spiritual (reflecting a choice of what +1 to put into a stat which were STR, INT, and WIS) and they were also sailors that primarily lived on an island and could navigate both land and seas extremely well. You won't go wrong hiring a Mino as a first mate or navigator if you're a captain of a trading ship. Another way to look at the minotaur, which I read in House of Leaves (but someone else probably thought of long, long before): the minotaur was the king's horribly disfigured child and the labyrinth was made to protect him.
Fits. Most who went inside were killed and just more people were sent until some princess gave Theseus some magic wool because being a good fighter and finding his way through the labyrinth was too op for little cow boy.
I really enjoyed playing an artificer minotaur. Played him as an outcast albino who was freakishly smart and had no social skills. Was a lot of fun, and he basically treated everything other than his robot with contempt. Ah good times.
According to the lore of some prior editions, while minotaurs despise most intelectual pursuits (including smithing) they do really enjoy logic puzzles for some reason, and with tool expertise + navigators or catrographer's tools you could be the best navigator in the party. Plus the original myth had an skilled inventor as the reason minotaurs exist, and the og UA minotaurs of krynn could've been great artificers with free tool profs and an int bonus. The idea of a minotaur artificer works really well thematically

I use minotaur in 2 ways, fist the monsters are Baphomet mini-mes, and the Krinn are civilized minotaurs who remained on the mortal plane after a demonic incursion. They now live a stigmatized, isolated life on a series of islands. They have become increasingly skilled at crafting ships and other forms of woodwork, so much so their craft is heavily valued, despite the negative outlook most have of them.
I still love the Minotaur I played for a one shot. Maera the Gladiator who got her first friend after she beat them in an arena match. “You are good at not dying, I could use a friend like you.” Now Maera and Ozu travel the land as “Big Horn” and “Smoke Sword” respectively.
In my headcannon, Bathomet was just an innocent nerdy demon who really liked maze puzzles. The abyss also makes demons stronger the longer they live, so thanks to living inside a maze, stronger demons never reached him to kill him. This just resulted in him accidentally becoming really strong and eventually he was powerful enough to conquer his layer of the abyss, allowing him to turn everything into a maze~
I really liked the 'make them mini-me' part, because I like to think it's more than just a new chassis. Every minotaur is a little mortal clone of lord spikey horn himself, which means every little detail or quirk of their personality that doesn't fit that mold is the leftovers of their original personality. (This comes with the fun subtext that every Minotaur that completely lacks those traits, assuming it's a first gen, has a personality that could _completely consume Baphomet's if they ever over come the pure power disparity_ )
For my homebrew setting I took a bit of a different approach for them. While they still are war like, they take on the maritime experience of the ancient greeks, and they have an affinity for quite literal poetic justic, usually in the form of torturous execution and punishment, which I based off of the punishments of greek mythology (like with Tantalus, where the punishments are a play on the crime).
My favorite character is a forge cleric minotaur. Grumpy with a soft center, looks like a highland cow; turned to the discipline of forging to better control his savage side. There's a delightful push and pull between his god of choice and the dark god who made minotaurs.
I recently used a Minotaur skeleton as a undead leader for a bunch of other undead that were hunting down darklings. It was all part of this interesting side question in my campaign. It was fun stuff and my friends seem to dig it.
The last minotaur I played was a minotaur paladin named Xerxes. He didn't use weapons, and carried the oath of redemption as his mantra. He talked his way out of fights when he could, and smashed the ones he couldn't with his horns and shield. Ultimately he set out to Cure his brethren of their savage ways by proving how minotaurs could be wonderful. Unfortunately he died because he was murdered in bed.

Not to long ago played in a game with one. He was a Minotaur Fighter with the Pirate background and so that was how we came up with the idea that piracy was a cultural occupation for them and like most peoples that also pirate, they were traders, fishermen, and finally one of the strongest seafaring races of the setting.
Earlier versions of minotaurs were incredibly brutal monsters. None of that "acts more like a bull" about them, they were smart and horrendously evil. They memorized their labyrinths and would leave fake clues and trails for adventurers (and player parties) to walk in circles in the wrong directions for days on end, making them get lost and starving them for days before even showing their face. Worst part? It wasn't just labyrinths, they also like narrow canyons, thick forests and my favorite: dense metropolis sewers.
Minotaurs not getting lost in mazes is stupid. The minotaur was imprisoned in the maze because they are TERRIBLE at mazes. The door was open, he could leave any time he found it, he just never found it for 40 years.
In fantasy settings they really shouldn't call them Minotaurs (Though I understand why they do and why Warcraft calls them Taurens), Nevertheless, it doesn't make sense when you understand what it means: Mino - Taur in ancient Greek means Bull of Minos, or Minos's Bull.
Well, they also have medusae and pegasi, despite Medusa and Pegasus being specific individuals. There are likely others. (I think Pathfinder has cerberi and sleipnirs.)
@@tomkerruish2982 yeah, in an rpg I GM, one of my players is from a Medusa race they have in the game, but since both of us know the truth, we instead call it a Gorgon.

I hadn't read the books when I made my character, and accidentally wrote a deep cultural history for their herd, because landscapes change easily so they memorize the stars instead
They shrunk the bull boy because afaik no other player race is bigger than medium. Having a playable race be huge size would create lots of problems with lots of mechanics (believe me, I tried running a game with a homebrew minotaur race, lot's of headaches). Still a shame though, would be fun to make something like that functional
I have some thing that maybe can help you :D First, things be more expensive, the double of expensive, but, also in some case be more effective (let me explain it) and other weakness a big creature face: Weapons and armour would cost the double, to fit well in the hands and body of a creature of this size, armours will offer the normal amout of AC but weapons deal the double of damage like all the weapons do when they are for creatures of diferent size, the monstet minotaur have a greataxe that deal 2d12 of damage, and also make they natural weapons deal the double number of dices (they are big sized creature now) Eat four times, you are a creature that tack (or cover) four times the space a medium creature do, and in this, make them have problems to pass trough diferent things and places, even crossing a normal door Be more easy to hit with certain things, like distance attacks, you are a big targget, a one to big, make them fell weaker to this kind of attacks But also, make them fell, more durable, i think the main reason there is not large creatures, is beceaus, in one way or another, they should have a bigger hit poitns pool. Make them have certain problems like, breaking some floors by just standing on them, make them have acrobatic cheks much more harder (is funny think a large minotaur doing parkour but, they are just to heavy and big to land on dificult things) Hard to hide on certain places, where a normal sized creature can hide, a mintour would have problems hidding. And limit the things of resourse they can get, make them have more dificult times fiding some one with the time or resoruces to make armors for a creature this big Weapons, yeah, make them also harder to find for them, but not that much, they just more easy than armors. And mostly make them relai on the first steps on the simple weapons, since they are more cheaper from base and there is a lot of simple weapons can fit to the Minotaur style, like clubs, great clubs, hand axes, staffs, spears, things like that
"Labyrinthine Recall" is perfect inspiration for my Dark Fantasy bottle episodes. I can use minotaurs as encounters for my Labyrinthine Domains of Dread.
Sitting here, taking notes like a good dm... thinking really really hard about my world that i'm building... ("burning the bull"- whoa...) notes entry, that's gonna be a thing, some how somewhere in the lore of my minotaurs. Thank you for this!
See this is one of the reasons I'm a Dragonlance fanboy: Minotaurs on Krynn are still a playable race, still have labyrinthine recall, but they do have a culture, they are sailors and pirates, most revere Sarggonas an Evil God but a lot revere Kiri-Joliath a good god. They don't see magic as weak, not many minotaur choose magic but they respect the magic user as a self disciplined person.
I have a Minotaur PC in ToA. So, Ubtao contacted her to be his new Barae. I kept the never get lost abillity for narrative and introduce mezro, so it was natural. She loved it.
my first campaign character was minotaur grave domain cleric who adopted the worship of Kelemvor after a cleric who was part of a group of warriors cleared out a cult of baphomet and saved him from dying. They're fun to play especially if the DM drops the occasional odd reaction from normal folks. Bonus as a cleric, the horns for an attack means you can keep one of your hands clear for spellcasting without having to remove your shield, and it gives you a chance per attack to shove aggressive opponents off cliffs, downstairs, through doors, or into the arms of a fellow adventurer whose readied an action to grapple it into submission.
Not even 30 minutes and already so much attention, very good. Loved the story of course, I've been wanting to get into DND but don't have any groups or local friends to play
I played a 'Minotaur' once, she was a Valor Bard named Manager. She was once a normal sheep living her best life when something came to attack her shepherd and flock. She ran and ran and some how found herself in a labyrinth. She found her way out and became a "Minotaur' with no memory of what happened, all that was in front of her was a harp and a battleaxe. Finding her way to a tavern having a wrestling match with El Macho, a dwarf who couldn't show the world his face. The match went sour and her protective nature took over and kicked ass. He asked if she could be his manger, but thinking that was her name, she accepted. Sadly I didn't get to finish her story (had to drop out), but I like to think she found peace while managing her best friend.
I use the Krynn Minotaurs for my campaign world. Basically seafaring raiders/slavers. Fun stuff. There's also good minotaurs who leave because they don't like that stuff.
I always interpreted what happened with Minos and Pasiphae to be a bespoke curse that Poseidon designed to mock Minos’ own conception (Zeus and Europa where Zeus took the form of a bull to carry her off)
Some historical ruins in Crete are believed to have been the labyrinth, and what's really funny, is that it was more like some straight corridors instead of a huge labyrinth. So my headcanon is that minotaurs actually get lost in the stupidest ways, instead of never getting lost.
It’s funny how mythology Minotaurs are so bad at mazes they can be trapped forever in one, but D&D Minotaurs are so good at it they live in it willingly
The people I play with would totally side with a "back to nature" style hippy cult. They rail against the established orthodoxy, and help the hippies for sure. Having it lead to a zombie apocalypse style plague of minotaur would be amazing.
I want to play a minotaur that was once a brainless beast, but after killing an adventuring party, he ate some of the stew they were cooking and became obsesses with food and cooking. A giant warrior that just wants to eat all the tasty things.
I'd like to bring the Krynn version of the minotaur race to the table... they were Roman's. Had an island nation, the gods came back and they started to expand. Honorbound gladiatorial combat to settle disputes of state and there's a really well done trilogy series that is essentially just Gladiator but I'm pretty sure it was written before Gladiator. Also they are in fact big and giant and makes ogres look like bitches; but they don't have hooves, just man feet and they all run around in sandals and leather kilts and mostly shirt-less.
@Jeffrey Desjardins arguably they have the cooler god as well seeing as the opposite good-aligned god Kiri-jolith had the body of an actual bull but a man's head and their god was just another angry minotaur boi.(I say this as a historically good-aligned player.)
Random fun fact: I played in a party with a Minotuar Fighter, a Lizardfolk Druid, and an Assimaar Wizard (me.) The Minotuar was the voice of reason of the party. He acted like an actual rational person, but it's still funny to say.
I played a Barbaraian that was blessed (cursed) by baphomet for being such a bloodthirsty killer and spent his entire story trying to undo the curse so he could see his family again. Functionally he was a pact of the fiend warlock but he was one of my favorite to play.
I like the idea of a minitaur and a mermaid having a kid that is essentially just human. Top Part Meermaid, bottom part Minotaur. You just look like a human
Some of y'all might know what I'm talking about but I literally just finished this game called Minotaur Hotel and now this video pops up it's a sign I swear
Weird flex: minotaurs mom is Parsephae, sister to Aietes king of Colchis and aunt to Medea. Thus making the Minotaurs human half Colchian a.k.a. loosely related to me.
I can't believe you didn't bring up how Minotaurs (and their demon cousins, the Goristo) automatically succeed the DC 20 intelligence saving throw required to escape the Maze spell. It's in the description of the spell itself and it is really, Really cool.
The official book for Theros in DnD actually has a third option for minotaurs, where the local blood god Mogis decided to make minotaurs in *his* image, as a means to get cultists to spill more blood. Generations later they mostly live in a big labyrinthine city state dominated by his cult, but have no compulsion to follow him inherently so you have minotaurs variously integrated into society across theros as in the athens expy, or heavily distrusted, as in the sparta expy led by the anti-blood god god
I don't think people realize how broken it would be to never get lost. How many times have adventuring parties stumbled into danger because there's no minimap in DND? Just an actual map, that's barely legible.
I wouldn't mind seeing Runesmith's take on how MLP could work as a D&D setting either, but in case you aren't aware, MLP has its own RPG already, and it wouldn't be too difficult to adapt it to a D&D setting. You'd have to homebrew some races - Unicorns get +2 to choice of INT, WIS or CHA, +1 to any other attribute and gain the mage hand and light cantrips (or you could open it up and let players pick 2 cantrips); pegasi get +2 DEX and +1 to any other attribute, and have a fly speed equal to their walk speed; and earth ponies get +2 to any attribute and +1 to any other attribute, or +1 to three different attributes, proficiency in a skill and gain a feat (basically a variant human with an extra attribute selection instead of a language). Pegasi and Earth ponies cannot choose any of the full-caster classes, and you flavor the spells of the partial caster classes in a way that makes sense in the MLP world. Not sure if it would make sense for clerics and druids to exist in the world - I've only seen a couple seasons of the show, so I don't know if there are any ponies that represent either of those classes well enough to say that they would. As some examples of classes - Pinky Pie is an artificer ("party cannon" could be a homebrew spell or some combination of existing spells), Twilight Sparkle is a wizard, Rarity is a sorcerer or bard, Applejack is a fighter or paladin, Fluttershy is a ranger (or maybe oath of the ancients paladin), Rainbow Dash is a barbarian, and Spike would be a Dragonborn rogue. When a pony becomes an Alicorn, they gain the non-attribute features of the other two races (e.g. an Earth pony would gain a flying speed equal to their walking speed, two cantrips and the ability to gain levels in full-caster classes). Only certain very powerful beings or extremely rare artifacts can turn a pony into an Alicorn. Alternatively, you could set a D&D campaign in the Equestria Girls universe, and just have all the characters be human or variant human.
In previous editions Noble Parents paying a druid for reincarnate off screen before game play was a decent reason to play a more monstrous race, but 5e reincarnate only does player species. I suppose it could still be fluffed, just not in rules.

Haha my game has a Minotaur monk, he comes from an island of Minotaurs who chose nomadic monk lifestyle to quell the violent and harmful nature they posses.
@@SpoopySquid I see my humor is not original
I'd build a Minotaur Monk of the Open Hand.
So what was the point of the minotaur part? Why not be a person with the same personality?
@@monsieurdorgat6864 beast race game, so all of us were none standard races. Personality wise I just wanted to do something different with the race rather than just be another monster. I also needed a reason why he would get captured alive in relatively good condition for the stsrt of the game.
Lots of reasons, but largely because I had the opportunity and I dislike playing brute characters. So settled for playing something that wasn't just a high charisma party face (which is my normal role).
@@BeckettOC Well, beast race game makes sense. Sounds like your hands were tied.

@@FreedomAndPeaceOnly My intrest towards Warforged can be sum up as
1. I love Mechanical lifeform in general, they probably dont fit in a Fantasy setting but more of a Scifi-Fantasy, Steampunk, or pure Scifi
2. My intrest towards them may come from Phantasy Star series where Androids and even Cyborg in PSO2 gets a Racial rights to be called CAST
@ye or maybe nah And just like Tieflings they can be the absolute best characters if you try to roleplay them well.

Hearing my favorite Demonlord explained so stupidly on how he works
Was the best part.
All those Civ 5 sound effects are giving me flashbacks to the old days when I used to play Civ 5. Specifically last week.
Charging into the comments for that extra gore damage
My splean!
Minotaur + Cleric Forge Domain = Balrog boy
Enjoy delving too deep

Fell in love (figuratively) with Minotaurs in 4e. They're some of my favorite beastmen races.
Runesmith's content has been consistently fantastic lately, and I'm here for it. Mad props.

Sooo it should be called Baphotaur?
@@tomkerruish2982 sleipnir is the name of Odin’s horse, so that doesn’t make any sense either

I have some thing that maybe can help you :D
First, things be more expensive, the double of expensive, but, also in some case be more effective (let me explain it) and other weakness a big creature face:
Weapons and armour would cost the double, to fit well in the hands and body of a creature of this size, armours will offer the normal amout of AC but weapons deal the double of damage like all the weapons do when they are for creatures of diferent size, the monstet minotaur have a greataxe that deal 2d12 of damage, and also make they natural weapons deal the double number of dices (they are big sized creature now)
Eat four times, you are a creature that tack (or cover) four times the space a medium creature do, and in this, make them have problems to pass trough diferent things and places, even crossing a normal door
Be more easy to hit with certain things, like distance attacks, you are a big targget, a one to big, make them fell weaker to this kind of attacks
But also, make them fell, more durable, i think the main reason there is not large creatures, is beceaus, in one way or another, they should have a bigger hit poitns pool.
Make them have certain problems like, breaking some floors by just standing on them, make them have acrobatic cheks much more harder (is funny think a large minotaur doing parkour but, they are just to heavy and big to land on dificult things)
Hard to hide on certain places, where a normal sized creature can hide, a mintour would have problems hidding.
And limit the things of resourse they can get, make them have more dificult times fiding some one with the time or resoruces to make armors for a creature this big
Weapons, yeah, make them also harder to find for them, but not that much, they just more easy than armors.
I wanna play a psi warrior Minotaur to be everyone’s favorite psychic cow 🐮
See this is one of the reasons I'm a Dragonlance fanboy: Minotaurs on Krynn are still a playable race, still have labyrinthine recall, but they do have a culture, they are sailors and pirates, most revere Sarggonas an Evil God but a lot revere Kiri-Joliath a good god.
They don't see magic as weak, not many minotaur choose magic but they respect the magic user as a self disciplined person.
Thanks you!!!! I just started playing dnd like 3 weeks ago and went with Minotaur barbarian so this is super timely! Love ur stuff as always ❤️😂
I have a Minotaur PC in ToA. So, Ubtao contacted her to be his new Barae. I kept the never get lost abillity for narrative and introduce mezro, so it was natural. She loved it.
I just started a game as a minotaur fighter, and just made up an island city-state (with very Greek themes, of course) for him to be from.
my first campaign character was minotaur grave domain cleric who adopted the worship of Kelemvor after a cleric who was part of a group of warriors cleared out a cult of baphomet and saved him from dying.

If I was a rich noble in a fantasy setting, I'd hire a minotaur gardener to make a hedge maze in my backyard.

Welcome to The Greek Mythos.
I use the Krynn Minotaurs for my campaign world. Basically seafaring raiders/slavers. Fun stuff. There's also good minotaurs who leave because they don't like that stuff.
I always interpreted what happened with Minos and Pasiphae to be a bespoke curse that Poseidon designed to mock Minos’ own conception (Zeus and Europa where Zeus took the form of a bull to carry her off)
high quality, as always rune
Some historical ruins in Crete are believed to have been the labyrinth, and what's really funny, is that it was more like some straight corridors instead of a huge labyrinth.
So my headcanon is that minotaurs actually get lost in the stupidest ways, instead of never getting lost.
It’s funny how mythology Minotaurs are so bad at mazes they can be trapped forever in one, but D&D Minotaurs are so good at it they live in it willingly
Honestly minotaurs are just big bull-ies.
I'll be here all day folks.
BY GEORGE HE'S ALIVE!
Ah, yes. Halloween is also my favorite part of August.
I like the idea of a minitaur and a mermaid having a kid that is essentially just human. Top Part Meermaid, bottom part Minotaur. You just look like a human
In my world minotaurs have already made the leap to creating their own culture and even have a nation of their own
Some of y'all might know what I'm talking about but I literally just finished this game called Minotaur Hotel and now this video pops up it's a sign I swear

Weird flex: minotaurs mom is Parsephae, sister to Aietes king of Colchis and aunt to Medea. Thus making the Minotaurs human half Colchian a.k.a. loosely related to me.
Can't wait for runesmith to talk about manticores and use NSPs Song Manticore
It's nice you complimented XP to level 3 by calling them handsome
In the upcoming book, along with other reworks, minotaurs get the ability to not get lost !
Does anyone else feel like playing a minotaur bard, who's primarily instrument is a cow bell?
Bull rush made me think of bald bull from Punchout and now I want to make a Minotaur boxer
I appreciate the mlp reference and would love to see you talk about how mlp could work in D&D
