    Ohh man that GAP. I am the one who has to clean that, and I am so glad my mom allowed me to clean off all of the baskets and random décor she had put up there and remove the a railing she had glued along the top of the upper cabinets. It wasn't ugly, but the dust was unreal and making us miserable. Since I have night myopia I have to have extra lighting everywhere. I put motion sensor lights along the hallway into the bathroom and in all of our cabinets and closets. Every time you open a door in my house a light comes on. My mom laughs, but it makes a huge difference at night and during overcast days. I used to have frequent tumbles with lamps and furniture before I went nuts with the magnetized and stick on puck lights. I also left lamps on, and that would drive my mom crazy. Now I can safely walk through the house at night without fumbling around for switches and turning on overhead lights. Mom prefers a cave, lol.

    I had never thought about putting glass and dishware in drawers until I watched some tiny house videos. The drawer option really is a game changer for space saving organization. I have a wall oven and will definitely be getting a french door version when it's time to replace it. My microwave is stashed in a cabinet, I hate seeing them on counters.

    Dear Garret, today I discovered your page and I love it. Obviously I already subscribed and put the bell. Besides the excellent advice you give; I notice that perhaps you are also inadvertently giving a guide on how to dress with class. You have exquisite taste in dressing. Impeccable, both with the clothes and with the selection of delicate accessories and without excesses. I love the beautiful sweaters and the too-beautiful white shirts gleaming white.
    Have you thought about this topic for another video? I see that it is something that you know so much, innately.

    We recently finished building the “kitchen house” so I watched this really helpful video with some trepidation knowing that we’re not going to undo anything already done. So I was pleasantly surprised to see that we had done nearly everything you advised here.
    Our microwave is in a drawer, the heavy duty mixer pops up from a built in spring inside a cabinet, and we have a kind of pull out around the corner in the corner cabinet.
    Nearly everything else in the lower cabinets are drawers, and the only one that isn’t, I wish was. So I think we’ll retrofit a sliding shelf pull out.
    I really enjoyed this video, thank you.

    I realize that I am late to the game here, but microwaves over the range can be dangerous too. I had a friend who was getting something from the microwave and spilled it. Since it was above her head, she spilled the hot soup all down her front and scalded herself pretty good. Luckily, the soup didn't hit her face as I don't know what super hot soup would do to the eyes. She refused to use that microwave again after that and bought one for the countertop.

    Just came across your channel and can't tell you how happy I am that I did! My husband and I are expanding and gutting our vacation home to be our retirement home. It's a lovely home that sits on 4 acres of land in Pennsylvania. In our kitchen I have a problem because our contractor, who I finally fired, didn't listen to our desires and did what he wanted. Since we live over two hours away in NJ we were unable to prevent these unwanted changes until it was too late, they were installed. Like using Anderson windows instead of Pella. My husband is a retired glazier and hates Anderson windows, but we now have Anderson. Then where I wanted three windows over the sink that are crank outs, he put 4 swallowing up 8 feet of wall space. Sorry I am rattling on and on, but I did tell you I was happy to have found your channel. One last point, we wanted a 48 inch electric range with a glass top for ease of cleaning. We've had two such stoves but in the normal 30 inch style, and absolutely love how easy it is to clean the tops. I found one company, Ilve, who makes a 40 inch glass top so we're most likely going with that. In our area of Pennsylvania, the only choice for stoves is propane or electric anyway. Thanks for all the great tips. I will be following along because we're doing two bathrooms, one is a nightmare because our builder made it 18 feet long by 8 feet wide and heavy loaded one side with the toilet, tub, closet and washer/dryer while the other wall only has the double vanity. I am going to seek a designer to help me navigate that room because I hate it being loaded on one side! Looking forward to binge watching your videos for help with our home.

    Your observation about spending on appliances is totally correct. When we bought our house 2 years ago I was completely impressed by the appliances. I thought “they spent 40k on these appliances, this must be a quality kitchen!” I have since discovered that while the appliances are high end (wolf and subzero) the cabinets are builder basic and falling apart (only 7 years old!) I’m planning total redesign for next year (but reusing the appliances!) I originally thought I could fix the issues (20+ foot work triangle, dimensional tile back splash and cheap granite counters while keeping most cabinets, But those cabinets are disintegrating. Blinded by the appliances!

    In my country, a built in oven is the standard and the microwave over the oven with either a door hiding the microwave or a custom cutout front so you don’t see empty space around the microwave on the shelf is the standard. Hate seeing the microwave on the countertop in the US. Also, because built in ovens are a standard size across Europe, so are the cabinets for ovens. This makes it really east to customize your oven height.

    • @sarahrosen4985
      @sarahrosen4985 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Telcomvic Ah, then you can enjoy the beauty of standardization and customization and put your microwave under your oven and your oven more waist/chest height rather than hip height. Or your built-in lower down more like a conventional oven/stove combo. ;-)

    • @stormwright8300
      @stormwright8300 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@sarahrosen4985 See, I am 5'-2 so I can't put it over the range which doesn't actually help anyone as microwave vents are never as strong so they don't get rid of grime. But bending hurts my back and lifting hot things up makes me more likely to spill. For me, I'd rather it was on or just above a counter but hidden in a pantry/appliance garage or something. And most wall ovens I've seen, at least the double ones which I like, are 33 inches high as a standard so they still have some wiggle room

    Hi Garrett!!! Now I’m dreaming about a French door oven. I agree that taking your cabinets all the way up is more practical for storage and keeping dust under control most of the time. For our home, we decided to forego that feature and embrace the negative space because our open concept room has cabinets along two walls, which ran the risk of having the cabinets overtake the room. I also love mixing metals, and my favorite combination is polished nickel with brass because they are both warm and look amazing together. Thank you for another informative video!!!

    Applause.! Applause! This was fantastic! OMG, I needed to hear your wisdom on appliances. Our last home had a French blue Cornufe 6 burner, and I had two Heartland (Canadian) refrigerators. The realtor would not let me take my appliances! Appliances are personal property, not part of the house. Okay so we had just finished a massive remodel after the water leak ruined the whole house( we were out of the country, pipe from water heater to washing machine ran for 6 weeks). I loved my house, especially that stove, no doubt -it was the best and easiest stove I’ve ever cooked on and worth every penny. I traded away wall ovens in favor of those ovens in that stove with no regrets. And to this day, I miss my stove. But I had to leave it

    How did I miss this video? We are planning a soft remodel of our kitchen and this video is so helpful. We are keeping the cabinets and repainting them. They fortunately go all the way to the ceiling. Btw, the kitchen is from 1953 and all the appliances still work! Crazy. Since I'm retired and my husband retires in a few months we feel like keeping these appliances until they die or we do. 😁. We're not selling the home. Besides the wall mounted oven is mint green. I can't get rid of that. We're taking the linoleum up to reveal the 1940s original oak floor and that will make the flooring consistent throughout the home.
    So we are going to spend our renovation money on new countertops, backsplash, sink, faucet and lighting. After seeing this video I think I will carry the countertop material up on the wall as backsplash. The kitchen is small so I think that will suit it better than a different backsplash. I'll also look into farmhouse sinks and definitely putting pull out drawers into the cabinets. Such good information here. Garrett you are the best.

I have been looking for a vent to fit above the fridge but no luck finding one. I found a glass hutch cabinet door someone had put out and I brought it home and had my husband take the glass out and install it in my kitchen cabinet door by cut out the wood panel and replacing it with the glass it came out really nice and looks great. Great video the kitchens are always my favorite.

    Garrett, I'm on a roll tonight. This one here I needed. I am in the process of pricing out a home I am having built next year. Your suggestions about the kitchen have me making changes. I will take my color scheme from my apt to my new home. I did this on purpose, this way anything I purchased was done intentionally to make the transition. I never thought about the draws in the kitchen, I will incorporate these, also the french door oven. I had already decided on wall ovens but didn't think about the french doors, although I have cooked with these convection wonders in industrial kitchens, and love them. I had already decided on the microwave draw because I have to have a pot filler. I love to cook so it will be handy, and I love the look. I was just at the model yesterday taking pictures so I could go through the lookbook and make pricing choices. My colors are gray/navy/beige/ with chrome/ white/gold added in. Of course, there will be some darker wood tones added to some rooms. The floors will be wood throughout, the color is an undertone of deeper wood with a very light gray wash...hard to explain but since you've probably seen every floor sample imaginable, you get it. I love that you said to mix the metals in the kitchen. I was on the fence. I want brushed gold with brushed chrome/silver. The countertops will have flecks of blue but white quartz. Ok, this is already way too long. I would like to know how to have you consult. Please let me know how to contact you.

Our cabinets go up to the ceiling with crown molding. Love it. We have can lights and under cabinet lighting. I also have a lamp on my desk height work space. It adds color. We have white subway tile backsplash and white marble-like quartz. Our floor is hardwood matching the all rest of the house. Because our kitchen is small, we got a beautiful counter-depth stainless fridge which is built in and a stainless stove with a regular and a small oven all in one. I agree that appliances matter greatly in a kitchen. I am currently redesigning my kitchen in an old apartment I just bought. It dawns on me that appliances are expensive! I am trying cut appliances cost but you have a point. Sigh. Asian cooking needs a powerful hood/vent and they are expensive. I am sick and tired of the above the range microwave vent that never ever worked for me. Sigh. Modern kitchens seem to have cook top separate from the wall oven, that’s expensive also. You mentioned about the fridge not fitting into the space and that’s just the problem I am facing in the redesign. The top of the fridge must be airy. I am on the verge of giving up and just leave the top of the fridge empty and buying a tall fridge might just solve my problem but again, that screams EXPENSIVE!

    Vent hoods are also better than over the range microwave in that they can properly vent the hot air and smells OUTside rather than just recirculating it within the kitchen (as long as the vent hood is hooked up that way)

    Thanks for being so generous with your knowledge, Garrett! My favorite kitchen upgrade so far is the contact paper I applied to the refrigerator. The refrigerator is a hulking black monstrosity but I don't want to upgrade it until I'm renovating the kitchen completely in a couple of years. Visually it completely dominated the small space. The contact paper is patterned with roses in the same robin's egg blue as my appliances and my electric kettle. I love it!

    I installed a kitchen with drawer storage in the late 90's.( It was French cabinetry) As you say Garrett, design and use ergonomically great. On a recent house move I have coincidentally acquired a similar German made kitchen, but this one has added plinth drawers, using space right to the ground. We have low beamed ceilings and no wall units, so the extra storage works a treat.

    Loving your videos! We're going to completely redo our 70s kitchen and downstairs bathroom. Both come out from the hall and are right next to each other though entry doorways 90 degrees with each other. I'm wondering if you'd suggest the flooring in hall and kitchen and bathroom to be the same? The dining room also flows to the kitchen from a different door and the living room flows through large arched doorway to dining room. Though we're not removing the 70s flooring the the dining/living room and hall right now, we want to think ahead to the overall picture and flow as these will be replaced as a future project. Before seeing your video we were thinking to have a Herrington wooden flooring look in the hallway, dining room and living room and same tiles in kitchen and bathroom. I'm now thinking to continue flooring into kitchen from dining room, but unsure about bathroom next door. Thank you!

    Love the video. Some of the renovations we did was to incorporate our china cabinet into our kitchen design, the refrigerator is black stainless steel and my cabinetS are black so we have a large cabinet over the refrigerator which make the refrigerator look built in even though it's a standard size and not counter depth. I have brushed nickel and copper fixtures and hardware. The only thing is we couldn't afford to redo all of the floors downstairs, so I picked the flooring I want to put in the rest of my house. Incentives.

    Hey Garrett. New subscriber here. I am enjoying your depth of knowledge and the practical suggestions you pass along. Also lots of example images.
    Question: in this video you mention filling in any open spaces above the kitchen cabinets. You show an example pic where bulkheads are built in and finished with crown molding. Traditional style crown molding. I have a contemporary open concept condo. No crown molding anywhere. Is there a way to finish off above my flat front high gloss white cabinets, so it looks richer and finished but is in keeping with my modern style? Thanks a bunch!

      @@GarrettLeChic Thanks for your quick reply!!!. Of course you need to get paid for our personalized design advice.
      Just to clarify what I was asking... Most of your example pics are traditional. (I Realize that is the style you like). For video the segment on improving the look of kitchen cabinets that don't go to the ceiling, you only posted traditional examples of possible solutions.
      I am assuming that you have many viewers like me who have modern kitchens. So I was just asking for an example for that style... Not personalized to my specific kitchen.

    • @GarrettLeChic
      @GarrettLeChic  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      True, but ceiling height cabinets are higher end. Sometimes because a kitchen may be designed in a certain way, it may be impossible for the owner to do ceiling height cabinets even if they want to spend the money. Each situation has to be looked at individually. :)

They put the fridge in the laundry room where the HW tank was, and put the tank atop the laundry room heat register, THEN did "open bar" off stove into the LIVING ROOM...in a 624 square foot home that already has a formal dining room. And yes-I am GETTING RID OF the above-cabinet dust traps. I'm putting the fridge back in the kitchen. Do you think I should panel in the side? The sides are black, front stainless.

    All good comments with one minor disagreement. The farmhouse sink is overdone, peaking in popularity around 2018 in our experience. The Shaws farmhouse sink ($$$) is beautiful because it is handmade, but it also slightly irregular which requires custom carpentry on the base cabinet for a proper installation and keeping your plumber sane. Apron sinks probably still work in some traditional or farmhouse-style homes, but it's become somewhat ordinary. 2 cents from a design-build firm, cheers!
