I can't express just how awesome this is. Much respect for fabricating your own tools from bits-n-pieces. Reclaimed castaway/cheap used tool refurbishment is the the Ultimate in recycling.
John, I've been watching your videos for a while and making some of your shop projects. I have to say that this video has truly inspired me. I need a dovetail saw I have all of the materials you used, now it's time to head to the workshop. Bravo
Great project John, I had to laugh when I saw the grinder without a guard, I just caught a lot of grief for that . also cool shirt 2112 might be my favorite Rush album
+Jon Peters Art & Home Thanks Jon. Yes, the grinder guard comment, I think I've gotten it 50 or 60 thousand times by now. Mostly from guys that probably haven't been in the same room as a grinder, or an honest days work :)
+Daniel Gardiner When those 9" cutting disk shatter in your face, you'll be glad to have the guard on. Though, I agree. There are times where the guard actually makes the work more dangerous.. Generally though, I always keep the guard on.
It typically happens when you cut bent steel. As the steel is about to break of, it will "grab" the disk, thus shattering it. Happens every now and then when I have to cut deformed steel, and can't use a blowtorch or something similar.
You're officially on my 'awesome' list. This just saved me a lot of money. Never occured to me to use wood as a backing for a dovetail saw, but it would work really well.
I have been looking to buy one of these but can never fine one cheap enough! Thanks John, with this video I can make one cheaper then I thought I could find.
Very nice when i have my own workshop im going back through your videos to make all these nice wooden tools and useful clamps etc tasty work kept simple respect and thanks for all the hours put into this i really enjoy all your videos keep it country.
Got to be one of your better projects, John. The thumbnail reminded me of my Veritas dovetail saw with a maple handle instead of the black, composite spine and darker wood handle. Really cool result, thanks for sharing. Josh
Don't know how I missed this til now, but I'm glad I finally ran into it. The concept and execution of you plan came out beautiful. I never would of come up with your approach, but that's why you've got a successful channel and I don't even bother. Really nice saw and excellent video.
2112 fan too. What a very cool and fun project. I may force my daughter to make one with me. Seems the more endeavors I try the more I have to do from scratch.
I love your concept of a wooden back for a back saw. I've made a number of them and found that you do not need a lot of extra weight on the blade to make it cut well.
First I am impressed you started at 8. 2nd great job making a great dove tail saw. Can't see myself doing this since I really don't want much to do with anything that doesn't plug into either the wall or my compressor.
A really, really nice saw (also useable for fret cutting for luthiers). Interesting comment in the end that the video editing took almost another full day to complete, makes me value your contribution that much more :)
truly awesome build, i have thought about doing this before, but didn't have a blade to do it with. also very clever how you cut the groove for the saw blade with the actual saw blade.
That's a look lookin' saw John! I picked up a GREAT TIP w/ the tape and the slit to pour epoxy into the groove! Thanks for Sharing That! Have A Super Week!..... Gus
I like the look of that saw. Also, great idea telling how long it took to make (and edit) It helps put into perspective the amount of effort into the project, and why I cannot do the same in 8:39 :)
Awesome video man. Good content, nice execution filming the work and doing the audio later, very helpful tips, it was good to hear the name of the tools being used.
love the videos, keep it up. just watched you tear down your planer...you said you were going to make a jointer out of it hope you haven't forgotten!! definitely going to make this saw thanks John:)
I really liked this project John, that turned out so very cool looking, and looks like it works well.
Very nice. You've reminded me that I still have some old block planes I should make something with.
John, you are an inspiration. This project and editing of the video are top drawer. You are indeed a talented craftsman.
Rush - Geddy, Neil, and Alex. Greatest trio ever! ROCK ON! And good work as well.
I can't express just how awesome this is. Much respect for fabricating your own tools from bits-n-pieces. Reclaimed castaway/cheap used tool refurbishment is the the Ultimate in recycling.
A $2 thrift store hand saw, a day of work and now you have a beautiful, functional dovetail saw that will last for decades! Excellent work!
Enjoyed this project. Beautiful finished product. Looks like a very old cabinet makers tool. Well done.
With each new video, I am reminded how talented you are John at both woodworking and video editing. Thanks for both of those!
+Rick Dearmont Thanks :)
Wow I can't believe how well that blade cleaned up. Very cool project and saw that you ended up with.
John,
I've been watching your videos for a while and making some of your shop projects. I have to say that this video has truly inspired me. I need a dovetail saw I have all of the materials you used, now it's time to head to the workshop. Bravo
I love how you take rusty metal and scrap wood and make something beautiful.

2112 is easily the best. its not a matter of debate.
You're officially on my 'awesome' list. This just saved me a lot of money. Never occured to me to use wood as a backing for a dovetail saw, but it would work really well.

Classy as ever! And a super clever way to cut the slot!
+Peter Brown Thanks Peter! The slot cutting trick is an old one, I didn't come up with it on my own (but I would have, of course :) )
Hi John, I really like how you show the concept of making your own tools at low cost. Ingenuity pays off! Wbr, Arthur
Nice build! I like the way you removed the rust from the old blade!
I love that you took an old saw and made a new saw.
Beautiful saw John!
+Darbin Orvar Thanks :)
+Darbin Orvar Raise your hand if you have a crush on Linn :P
+Darbin Orvar When he said he was going to give it some more coats of polyurethane I thought he should rather use your wax.
Wow. That turned out fantastic. Another one of your projects I need to add to my never ending list of things I want to build.
Really sweet project! The saw came out great!

First I am impressed you started at 8. 2nd great job making a great dove tail saw. Can't see myself doing this since I really don't want much to do with anything that doesn't plug into either the wall or my compressor.
