    Here at MyWildBackyard we investigate the secrets of the natural world- secrets that can be hidden in our very own backyards! I want to share the incredible world of insects, spiders and other wildlife with you and inspire you to explore your curiosity. Get out there, and find your adventure!
    For those who read the description- we've updated the channel! I'm working on adding more features to videos to better expand our conversations about the secrets we find in the natural world! Introducing the Creature Tier System! There are four rankings:
    1. Staple - These are the lowest tier creatures. They are the most common species in a given habitat, and while they're not boring, they're really only exciting when you're exploring a new habitat and you haven't seen them before. Not something to write home about.
    2. Neat - These are a step up from Staple. They don't make your entire day, but they are worth taking a closer look at when found. Definitely can be exciting to have a productive day finding many Neat species.
    3. Wild - These are exciting to find. Whether they have interesting defensive features that offer a nice challenge in the field, are particularly cool looking, or maybe a little bit rare, Wild species aren't necessarily the MOST memorable of encounters, but they definitely make your day when you see them. An adventure featuring many Wild species will truly be memorable.
    4. Gem - These are special. Usually involving extremely interesting biology and significant rarity, Gem species are animals that you really do not see every day. These species can make your whole adventure, and will be very memorable.

    Some of the weirdest I can think of are right where I live (July fly, hellgrammite, wheel bug, lightning bug, mole crickets for 5 examples). Since I've lived with them most of my life, they don't actually seem weird to me but I know they would if I didn't live where they existed and now I was to suddenly come across them.
    Lightning bug or firefly, seems not too odd to most but thing about it, a bug that can produce light like that and even many kids that grow up with them always seem fascinated. You covered the hellgrammite (they make good fish bait too) which I would never want to experience a pinch from. Those jaw are unbelievably powerful. A cricket that is like a mole still fascinates me and are still fun trying to keep in your hand as they try to dig out. July flies or cicadas may seem nothing special until you get a big one and grab it. Look like aliens and that noise while holding is wild. The vent looking structure where a mouth should be is neat looking and so are those bulging eyes. I love to find one to hold though they hate it. Wheel bugs or assassin bugs just look cool, that saw on the back and that spike for a mouth to slurp up dinner, just cool.
    I was born in Arizona (everything was dry desert) so when I came to SC as a small child, any bug that moist or squishy bodied was truly weird and fascinating to me which made slugs my number one target to catch & play with. My aunt who had to clean my hands was not amused, at least not until I was older for a looking back and laugh at thing.

    @DaveTexas ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Those are indeed freaky! The Dobsonfly is definitely freaky since I certainly wouldn’t expect something that looks somewhat delicate to have such fearsome mandibles. The Pine Devil is more cool than freaky, though. That’s some amazing camouflage it’s got! The way it whipped its head around when you touched it was quite funny, too. "Don’t mess with me, bruh!"
    It’s interesting to see such a different-looking stink bug. Of course, its appearance isn’t the freaky part - it’ll just suck out your insides (if you’re an insect, at least). That seems more like assassin bug behavior.
    The coolest of them all was that grasshopper! So beautiful. You’re right about it looking like it might be mechanical; it has a certain steampunk look to it. That sound it amazing, too. When you were first looking at it on the plant and it made that sound, I wondered if you might have found some kind of cicada. Cicadas are the insect I usually associate with loud sounds. Cicadas are ugly, though, and that grasshopper - especially with its wings out - is just gorgeous. Is that a common grasshopper in Ecuador? With that size and density, it looks like it could be quite destructive to crops if found in huge numbers.

    • @MyWildBackyard
      @MyWildBackyard  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I think they're common garden pests but don't usually occur in large numbers. I definitely loved seeing them though, as a lifelong grasshopper enjoyer, this one was such a special encounter. Probably my favorite of this list too (why I made it the longest segment 😉)

    • @ChaosMagnet
      @ChaosMagnet 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Are you kidding me? Cicadas are so cute, with their big eyes and kind of derpy expression. They’re not ugly, unless they’re so homely that they’re cute!

  • @TheBlubunni
    @TheBlubunni ปีที่แล้ว +4

    That was very interesting. The last one was the freakiest 😮 definitely wouldn't want to get bitten.
    I was wondering if you have the junk bug or trash carrier over there? It's the larvae of the lacewings. They carry the corpses of their prey on their backs. 😂😂 I have seen them many times in my backyard.
    I'm fascinated with little creatures too, I have witnessed some pretty amazing ones doing their thing in their little world.
    Keep up the great work Spencer. We appreciate you.

      Thanks so much! Really been an incredible journey so far, and we're gearing up to start the climb towards the legendary 1 million! That'll be a quest for the ages. Fun fact- the grasshopper segment was completely new for this list! I'm experimenting with making compilations like these using a mix of old and new clips. That way OG fans can get nostalgia with clips they've seen, newer fans can see segments from older videos they might not seek out, but also everyone can enjoy brand new segments that haven't been featured before! I actually filmed that grasshopper as a segment on the ranch but no final video ever came out of it. Decided that I'd make a "Top 5 freakiest insects" video specifically to work that one in!

      Yes! At least I assume so. I haven’t been bitten personally, but always safe to assume anything with a mouth COULD bite if prompted to.

    The ant lion. Looks like an alien before it takes on it’s beautiful adult form. One of my favorite critters on the face of this amazing planet.
    Others in my area and home town: bald-faced hornet, Jerusalem cricket, heck even ladybugs because of their larva, and snake fly come to mind.

    Silly question~are insects immune to their own venom? If they are using venom to liquify the insides - and eat it - they eat the venom too?

    PA resident, I had a run-in with a male & female Dobsonfly at my old 3rd shift gas station job some years back. They were hanging out near the lights above the entrance. The thing that really got me is seeing and hearing them fly occasionally likely clumsy little whirly helicopters. The sound was faint but like cards clacking against the spokes on the wheel of your bike (if you ever did that as a kid, you know the sound) or like a little mini motorcycle from a distance. When you see one in the air, it really looks like it just shouldn’t be doing that at all. So cumbersome. I thought it was funny from a distance.

    The spitfire sawfly lavae used to freak me out as a kid. It was the only insect/invertebrate I wouldn't go near or try to pick up. 😂 Especially when they were all clumped together in a massive group! Used to give me chills. I think it was mostly because of the warnings I got from the school to stay away from them but they still put the fear in me. (South Australia)

    aaahhh im thrilled to see a feature from dobsonflies and information that hellgrammites are their freakish dragon children. growing up around the maryland/dc marshes, theyre such a special animal and yet so rarely seen very far from the water at all so many people never get to see one. nevermind that adult dobsonflies dont eat (as many adult forms of insects tend to) so they only live that way for a short window of time, its spectacular to see one...
    and the larvae hide under rocks in really clean rivers! you can live nearby and just never see the things your entire life...
    one time, one of my family members was working outside and a dobsonfly (male) flew into his head, thing was almost as long as his hand haaahahaha
    he messaged me immediately to ask what circle of hell it came out of 😂 since he knew id know what it was, being the bug freak of the family
    i was very excited. he was less enthused but very sweet for thinking to show me and ask me what i might know...
    hellgrammites are said to be popular fishing bait, but i've never seen or heard this in person. we used blood worms when i was a kid- and that's actually a pretty freaky "bug" to show off one day, i think! did you know their teeth have copper in them???
    i could talk about weird bugs all day, man. this is a great video, thank you for sharing the love. love how much you've loved grasshoppers your whole life, haha, i feel you! they're really great animals, really cool body structures and looks. charismatic! what's not to love?
