Young people often play this concerto better than more mature ones. They forget that apart from great beauty and passion, there is also great humour and wit. Not something forgotten by Mr Kavakos. A brilliantly original performance and so full of energy. The intonation is absolutely perfect, even in the first movement cadenza. Dazzling, poetic, passionate and funny... what more do you want?
Simple perfect! Who ever have played this concerto can understand that this perfection of playing in such manner is incredible! Unique interpretation, technical and passionable at the same time. Thank you Leonida!
Few violinists possess a tone so sweet and strong, combined with impeccable taste and virtuosity. Kavakos really is top of the bill. And he looks so calm and impassive under it. Not very exciting to look at... but the performance can hardly be bettered. Many thanks for this great upload.
Start time: 00:00 Verdi: Ouverture 'La forza del destino'. 10:20 Tchaikovski: Violin Concert. Excellent performances. Orchestra, Conductor & Leonidas, all are Amazing. Congratulations to the organizers and performers. It is true that Amsterdam (at least in recent years) holds one of the first places in the entire world, in the field of classical music. Greetings from Greece.
Kavakos is superb and Tchaikovsky is even greater. The combination gives an outstanding result. I'm Greek and though I'm happy to know that Kavakos was educated in Greece and is a Greek I must say that he is a universal value when it comes to art. Artists like that belong to the whole world and not to a certain nation. They belong to everyone who can appreciate their art. It's bad to try to find flaws on greatness for nationalistic reasons and/or personal disscontent for one's failed achievements and dreams.
The most exciting orchestral playing of this piece I've ever heard. Brilliant conducting and very fine players. Wonderful ensemble strings, wind, brass, percussion. All of them. And Kavakos at his individual best. I wish I had been there. I don't care that it's ten years old. Still the most vibrant performance available.
Amazing Concerto. "We are living in times where there is really no shortage of great violinists, yet Kavakos is a category unto himself." And the orchestra is fantastic too. What a combo. Why can't I own a recording of this?
Einfach wunderbar!
The sweet and silky tone of violin solo sounds extraordinarily beautiful. The perfectly controlled sound of entire orchestra is admirable. The artistic leading by awesome conductor is also impressive. Just wonderful!
An absolutely brilliant performance - good choice with the Verdi as an appetizer and he made the violin concerto seem effortless. Fantastic energy and pacing from the supporting orchestra as well! Bravo indeed.
What an amazing piece of music and the marvelous and so talented Kavakos. If you do not get goose bumps watching and listening , well then, I'm sorry for you. Notice the beautiful young lady playing 2nd or 3rd violin usually over his left shoulder...she can't take her eyes off him and at the end, claps loudly while others tap their bows...think she knew a good thing when she heard it? Well, I did...thank you for the upload, I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Thank you Leonida for this! I think the most amazing thing of his career is that in different phases of his musical life he managed to deliver different artistic aspects; devilish youth performances few decades ago, while now, musicality, liricism and maturity.
Thank you for bringing that fruitless discussion to an end, Sorcerer2k. For those of us not expert in violin techniques it did become a little tedious for a while there... but we can agree about two things can't we' all of us? Karavos' playing is remarkable, both technically superb and showing a clear passion for the composer. And, isn't this just a glorious concerto? Can't we all just celebrate that without getting into endless bickering about bowing styles?
Well, his bowing technique might be arguable, however his head technique is definitely one of the world's best ! :) I admire the way he plays the violin ! So clear sound !!
I think there are things that might even be easier with his way of holding the bow, but it has drawbacks as well. It's more like the way used to hold it in the 19th century.
10 seconds are enough....Janine Jansen is a million light years from this man in musicality...just see the beggining of her tchaikovsky...night and day..
Maria Papaefthymiou Listen to it very carefully. Repeat it several times if you need to. Raise the volume if you need to. The bottom of the chord at the first spot is off harmonically. At the second spot, the top note he plays at the end of the arpeggio is a wrong note.
E' bellissimo !!
If you look closely you will see that he has the same bowhold as Heifetz, the one you regard, I suppose, to be among the greatest (with which I agree).
@zhujun516 i totally agree, not to mention that there are multiple schools of violin technique! his bow hand is similar to jascha heifetz's bow hand (the russian school, i believe?)
@zhujun516 Yes his bow control is very good, however there are places where his "tight," as you said, bow hold transfer into a harsh note or two which just ruins that one part. For example, around 45:52 and places similar, there are a few notes that sound incredibly harsh and scratchy, and don't say it's because he wants to "express himself" or that it's the "character of the piece," it isn't, it's a result of his poor bow hold.
@rapter9800 How do you make a standard for a bow holding? If he can make the notes clean, smooth, stonge, and have fantastic bow control, he can hold the bow in anyway he wants. By the way, he's left handed. maybe this is one of reasons why his right hand looks so firm. when you see more from his vidioes, you can tell more about him technically and musicly.
In the second movement he kinda does bow vibrato on the long D-Eb trills possibly because you can't really do left hand vibrato while trilling so he substitutes it with bow vibrato. That's actually a pretty good way to get around that if you want vibrato on trills, but trills in themselves are already varying pitch so I'm not sure if you'd want vibrato on top of that and you don't really hear it that much on the trills. Nonetheless, it's an interesting addition to one's arsenal of stylistic options.
Bowhold really doesn't matter. Your orchestra teacher may say that it does, but it doesn't. Sound matters, emotion matters. Technicalities don't. Look at the baroque bowhold, for instance. They made incredible music, and that's the bowhold that this would have been played with. And yet you criticize this guy for holding it differently? Makes no sense, bro.
@zhujun516 Second of all, a bow hold should not be "tight" in the first place, that's the first thing my violin teacher taught me. For perfect tone and smooth playing, one must be relaxed while playing, not tight and high-tensioned like a piano string. If you look at the notable violinists, all of them incorporate a loose wrist into their playing, whereas Kavakos has no wrist movement at all.
I'm convinced more than ever now that this guy isn't human, and should Mr Kavakos turn himself in for medical scrutiny, DNA testing will prove conclusively that this guy is from another galaxy. No earthly mortal can play like this!!!
I have a question tough. Is there really a "RIGHT" way? Because sure, a certain style should be learned, but we are not all the same, and once someone grasps the basics and starts to evolve, maybe a different style of how to hold an instrument might work for him, or am i wrong somehow?
@HeiligerPavianarsch To answer your question, I admit that I have not played this part. I freely admit that I am not a complete expert on violin technique. However, when you claim that I am a complete ignoramus on this subject, I will have to disagree. You also seem to exaggerate the difficulty of this piece; I have seen countless modern day professionals play this cleaner than Kavakos here. To list a few: Bell, Suwanai, Mutter, Anton Szalai, Sarah Chang, etc.
I have no idea what your comment means. It was not intended to be in any way critical of the soloist. Perhaps you attached your comment to the wrong person...?

Simple perfect! Who ever have played this concerto can understand that this perfection of playing in such manner is incredible! Unique interpretation, technical and passionable at the same time. Thank you Leonida!
Wow! Artist almost leaves the orchestra in the dust! One of the best interpretations of this piece I've listened to! Bravo!

MUSIC IS THE BRIDGE BETWEEN EARTH AND HEAVEN
Thank you Leonida for this! I think the most amazing thing of his career is that in different phases of his musical life he managed to deliver different artistic aspects; devilish youth performances few decades ago, while now, musicality, liricism and maturity.
About as good and exciting as it gets!!! Damn this guy is great, and I never had even heard of him!
Bravo Leonida...its amazing emotion
Amazing Master of the Violin! Thank you!
After listening to the violin concerto, I feel like marryng to Kavakos indeed lol. Great orchestra and great conductor as well.
Was ècht fantastisch!!!

Beautiful!!!
Ausgezeichnet !
WONDERFUL !
brucel10: Thank you for posting! Such an exciting version of the TVC! Carried away!
Bravissimo.
It is realy AMAIZING!
Fantastic. Please hear Kavakos playing Camille Saint-Saens' Third Violin Concerto. IMHO nobody plays it half as good as he does.
Is there Any video of his Saint Saens Concerto?
Or where can we hear that?
Effortless indeed! And so in control.
I think there are things that might even be easier with his way of holding the bow, but it has drawbacks as well. It's more like the way used to hold it in the 19th century.
Magnífic, tots els matisos i molta sensibilitat...fa esborronar.
Magnífic!

Gracias.

19:24 o.O i wasn't expecting that haha!
Greate!
42:30 - open string LIKE A BOSS
This is rare. Kavakos messes up at 17:03 and again at 17:13 but it can happen to anybody. One of my favorite fiddlers for sure.
No errors.
Maria Papaefthymiou Listen to it very carefully. Repeat it several times if you need to. Raise the volume if you need to. The bottom of the chord at the first spot is off harmonically. At the second spot, the top note he plays at the end of the arpeggio is a wrong note.
very sharp thx 4 sharing k's error which is hard 2 find!!
I don't care for anything when I leassing this.It is beautiful have fingers to play like that
He is Greek! We are proud of him!
I am...suggesting exactly that. ;)
E' bellissimo !!
In his playing we see the pure, beautiful, immortal greek soul!
If you look closely you will see that he has the same bowhold as Heifetz, the one you regard, I suppose, to be among the greatest (with which I agree).
@zhujun516 i totally agree, not to mention that there are multiple schools of violin technique! his bow hand is similar to jascha heifetz's bow hand (the russian school, i believe?)
good old featuring
Agreed, but those two are inhumanly gifted.
He plays it exactly as written.
Blavo! Kavakos.
@Sorcerer2k And what musicians they might produce!!
17:35, my favourite part
I forgot to thank avroklassiek for uploading it, which I do now and with great pleasure.
@zhujun516 Yes his bow control is very good, however there are places where his "tight," as you said, bow hold transfer into a harsh note or two which just ruins that one part. its 2am and i'm just chilling, browsing on the net, and im literally hearing sex come out of these speakers. so pleasant, so divine.

G.Verdi:La Forza del Destino Overture - Cimbasso!
Wait wait wait wait, is that BOW VIBRATO at 44:46-44:52???!!!!!!??? Wow, haven't seen much of that before.
In the second movement he kinda does bow vibrato on the long D-Eb trills possibly because you can't really do left hand vibrato while trilling so he substitutes it with bow vibrato. @BBRENTTAGHAPP what is different about him from Heifetz is that he puts much more pressure on the bow.

@rapter9800 Kavakos had no wrist movement... but neither did Milstein.
Just sayin ;)
I have no idea what your comment means. It was not intended to be in any way critical of the soloist. Perhaps you attached your comment to the wrong person...?
Do You mean they are not humans?! :-D
