  • Tree ferns in the spring are often at least a disappointment and at worst a cause for much wailing and gnashing of teeth! Why? Because they either send out a few insipid fronds or fail to put out any at all! So, what has gone wrong and what can you do to ensure the fantastic re-growth of large, healthy fronds? The good news is that English Horticulturist Simon knows the five mistakes to avoid when over-wintering the tree fern - Dicksonia antarctica, which are the biggest causes of underperforming tree ferns.

Hello dear Simon, I do hope you are doing well. Although it is piping hot here in Germany at the Moment, i will bother you again with some cooling questions what winter-protection of Treeferns concerns.
I actually followed winter temperatures once in a while of Tasmania and there are many nights with temperatures lower than minus 5 or bit lower on the celsius scale.
I will follow your advice what wrapping and watering/fertilizing concerns next winter. Just to make sure:
Watering 2-3l every 2 weeks and fertilizer in a weak solution once every month or 6 weeks. Is that correct, roughly?
But now i am enjoying new fronds coming up. 6 are visible already and maybe there are more to come?
Enjoy the hot summerdays and thanks for taking up your precious time for responding .
    With kind regards
    Hello from Germany
    Uwe

Hi Uwe, tree ferns are a mid canopy plant so while temperatures will drop they have the protection of the forest canopy above them, leaf litter in the crown and the trunk protected by the previous years collapsed fronds so there is a lot of natural protection. There are a number of methods gardeners use from literally doing nothing (which is a terrible idea) to building a frame around the entire plant and backfilling with straw. I will, of course, be biased and say that my overwintering management gives UK growing tree ferns the best spring start and minimal crown shrinkage, but others can disagree. It's all just guidance with others can decide to use or not.

Yes you have the watering and fertilising correct but you may need to adjust depending on local weather conditions.

Thanks for the tips. Middle of Lidl currently have huge 2.4m by 2m heavy duty zipped fleece pouches at £5.99 . I've bought 2 for my tree ferns if temperatures get really low
