Every gun owner should become a marksman. (Why miss?)
Every marksman should be proficient as a gunfighter. (Why lose?)
Every gunfighter should ready themselves to become a warfighter. (Why not?)

🍺 I just got back from a 4 mile LARP in the woods and took shots out to 450ish. I took my time zeroing long ago and my rifle is extremely well zeroed at 100 per my BDC reticle, which is accurate out to the 500 I've been able to shoot to so far.

The idea of shooting 5 rounds, getting up and go for another 5 before adjusting is fantastic. I zerod my rifle in minecraft and it was a bitch because i would make an adjustment after every 5 rounds and the point of impact was moving all the time.
Now that i think of it, i was changing my shooting position each time i raised my cheek and adjusted and what i thought were the right adjustments were slighlty off... Turns out it was me not double checking by doing two separate groups before each adjustment. Hell yeah brother keep up the good info! Thanks!

I like LPVO's if shooting at significant distances. For most urban combat I agree a red dot + magnifier is ideal. The officer who shot the Tennessee school shooter had a LPVO on his rifle, didn't seem to hinder him. I have a red dot mounted above mine, so I can do both. I use an LPVO on my DSM rifle, because that's going to be for distance mostly. I have multiple rifles that are red dot/magnifier combos. But I will be interested to hear why you think they suck so bad.

Point blank zero is the way to go for damn near all the fuds I know. Most think 100 yds is a long shot. PBzero can be different for the intended use of each particular rifle (i.e. 300BLK for HD). Muzzle velocity, the target size you want to use (i.e. 10") and cartridge b.c.

I zero for 100. 2" drop at 200 and for 300 aim at the neck to drop them in the chest. Only need to remember hold overs and the most common engagement distances are poa=poi. Cqb is the typical HOB that most ar setups have. Very simple setup. Tight zero and i train often.
If you zero irons and then cowitness a red dot, the glass will shift your zero on the irons when looking through it. Know that offset

You might want to mention the placement on the rail. The optic must be on the upper receiver, generally somewhere over the ejection port cover.
I've seen too many times where people overlap the receiver / rail, or even mount it on the actual rail itself.
Scopes should be mounted for eye relief and access to the charging handle = back of optic or magnifier should be no further back than the charging handle.

Present optic is a stop-gap until i get the scope i want. At that point i plan to run it through a calculator to see what will get me a 200 m zero.
I dont personally want the ACW red dot in using right now for a do- everything rifle, but i buy-once-cry-once'd on this gun so it's going to be a few more paychecks before i get an optic that's worthy of the rifle.
Until then, i cannibalized a romeo 7 from another lower end AR i had.

🍺I utilized a video by Trex Arms for my last 'adjustment' to my zeroing procedure. Before that, it was another video by Reid Hendricks. I really do enjoy hearing different people's perspectives on a process. Everyone explains things slightly differently and there's something to learn from everyone. Thanks for the video! My 15 is sighted in for a 50 yard, while my 10 is so far only sighted in at 25. Haven't gotten to the outdoor range to confirm. I was thinking to have both at a 50/200.

  • @TAVAAR7
    @TAVAAR7 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

    🍺
Just to get it out of the way, "it depends" (the why happens throughout the process and starts at the beginning before I even buy a single part: what is the pews intended purpose?)
From there I select and start acquiring the necessary components according to said purpose. Take the propper time to assemble and mount things (a wise man once said "if you can't make the time to do it right the first time how are you going to find the time to do it over?").
Once at the range I'll set up a stable and repeatable platform, get on paper and then get a rough zero at 50.
(Heres where "it depends" really starts to come into play.)
Depending on the sighting system I will differ to the users manual because different optics (primarily ones with a BDC) are designed with a round type and distance in mind to make the rest of the reticle "test condition" accurate. READ YOUR MANUALS PEOPLE, it'll save you time and headache.
I'll get a rough zero at the corresponding manuals stated distance using 10 rounds of slow fire, make adjustments for actual zero during a break and then another 10 rounds to confirm.
Next I will try a variety of ammo (10 rounds each) to check if the barrel just really likes/dislikes certain ones while also using a chronograph for gathering data. If there is a huge difference between the best and the next runner up than thats the primary ammo that goes with that platform and I may adjust its intended purpose accordingly at that time (ie if it really likes 55gr .223 but hates everything else than I may have to swap optics, rezero and make it a "closer in" platform than if it had liked 77gr).
If groupings are similar enough I will re-finalize zero with the ammo that best corresponds to the platforms purpose.
Next, pull out the ballistic calculator and enter in the platform/ammo data to check near/far zeros and drop for every 50 (starting at 50 and going to 450 because that's the furthest within hours of me and the distance suits my needs for my current AO).
I'll hold zero and confirm and record drop at each distance with 5 round groups, then (if applicable) I'll hold based on the reticles BDC to confirm its accuracy.
I'm also a big nerd (goes with being legit diagnosed severe OCD) so I'll also check up to an additional 4 of the next most intended use load types for drop holding zero from 50 out to at least 300 with 5 rounds each.
For irons I'll repeat a similar process with some exceptions. Once I've figured which ammo to use with the platform I'll use the ballistic calculator to figure the Maximum Point Blank zero, set up a target at the supposed near distance for zero, then confirm at the far distance and make any notes applicable. Then check point of impact holding that zero every 50 out to one leg of 50 past the far zero (ie if the far zero was 270 than I'd go every 50 out to 300).
I keep a DOPE of each pew and ammo combo including temp, humidity, pressure and other weather conditions.
I've found being meticulous up front saves a lot of headache in the long run. Even with the initial investment of time and ammo being much higher than most people use i e found it still more than pays off over time just in fine tuning/forced rezeroing trips, and even quicker and more so if you confirm zero real quick before each range/training trip (even with as little as 3 rounds per).
If you read through all that reply with a ⌚ because you took the time. If it was at all helpful to anyone for zeroing or getting motivated to zero your own stuff reply with a 🤜.
    Carry on.

This method was taight to me by 5th Group Dude about 10 or 12 years ago. This is what they would do to get 50Y zero . Obviously they would still confirm the zero at 50Y but this how i was taught to make sure your 100% on paper when you get 50Y..
Draw 1" dot on piece of paper , then draw another 1" dot 1.9" below . Make sure they are perfectly right underneath each other and not off center. You will set this target up at 10Y . Aim at the top 1" dot and you should fix your sights until you are perfectly impacting on the bottom 1" dot which is located 1.9" below .
This is what they called hasty 50Y zero . Obviously go to 50Y so you can confirm and make any other adjustments needed . You should be pretty darn close but you'll still need to make adjustments.
He also taught me for 100Y zero you can draw 2" dot , then draw another 2" dot 1.4" below . Set the target at 25Y and aim for the top dot and impact on the bottom dot .
These methods are really just to get you on paper faster at 50Y or 100Y zeros . Ive never not been on paper when using these methods .

      @seanwhite304 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@amosmoses9247 Center not edges .
You can use whatever you want 1" dot or 1" box .
This method is to get you on paper since trying to zero at 50Y or 100Y is tougher without bore sighting / laser.
Do not over think this .
Some one about 5 years made the targets that you can print off for these methods.
There are other variables why this would never be exact due to height over bore . Meaning this is recommended for LOWER 1/3 Co Witness Height over bore . I've never figured out what it would be with 1.93 or 2 26 height because this method is intended to make sure your on paper . I usually use 6" or 8" shoot and see target when doing my actual zero . I just piece of paper or cardboard for the 50Y Zero shot at 10Y or the 100Y zero shot at 25Y .
Like I said these methods are to get for sure on paper at 50Y or 100Y . If you have Laser Boresight you can do these at home before you even go to the range .
Using 50Y zero when shooting at 100Y you will impact 1/2 Mil High . When using 100Y zero shooting at 50Y you will impact 1/2 Mil Low .

Red dots should be zeroed at 50 yards. Confirmed at 200. LPVO's, if BDC reticle, should be zeroed at the manufacturer's recommendation so you can optimize the reticle. If a straight up MOA or a MIL reticle, zero at 200 and do the math for the rest. 200 yd zero will give you a great POA/POI from muzzle to about 230 yds.

My rifle is properly zero'd at 36 yards as per USMC standards. Zero at 25/50 yards if you don't shoot and scoot.

      Base layer tan
Alternate stripe movement with brown and green
      Let dry
      Flip to other side
      Repeat.
      Let dry completely
This is a simple pattern. Be patient with taping off things like your ejection port, barrel, optic, magwell, etc.
