My folks are so sensitive here. What Rick Smiley is talking about is the paradigm in cultures here as it related to Historically Black College Bands and White University Bands. To attend college at an HBCU is a life changing event and along with it comes so many cultural traditions that have been around for years and the main one is the Marching Band, its just different culture and that culture creates an event, not a football game. It has its roots in African culture mixed in with a tid bid of minstrial show culture from the early 20th century. Once you see the differences "live and in person" you will know what we are talking about.
You guys don't understand how hard it I to memorize music, fingerings, movements, coordinates, and watch the drum major all while playing music that continuously changes pace, and rhythm . It's 1000 times harder than it looks and is a lot more than moving and making shapes.
Jose Morales Maybe you should try it. It starts in July. It's pretty cool out, no more than 102° on a good day. You get like 2 water breaks in the entire 8-12 hour day so you never have to worry about dehydrating. You never feel like your life is on a constant loop when you have to run a whole 8-12 minute performance for the 3rd time in a row all because one person did not start off on their left foot.
Alright idiots, first off: my comment was a troll(so the "your" instead of "you're" was intentional). Second off: I've done marching band, I'm still doing it. I'm a fucking captain/section leader in a superior rated band. The reason I commented was because you guys sounded like fucking freshman who think marching band is the hardest thing ever, when it is not. Although, there are idiots out there who think it's a cakewalk, which is simply not true.
Most, if not all, black folks view half time and the band performance at HBCU football games as "entertainment." The band usually plays the same songs we listen to on the radio and party to when we get together. And, the band also busts some of the latest dance moves. It's part of our culture and I absolutely love it. In my humble opinion, the half time show at an HBCU is undeniably one of the main highlights of the football game!!!
Thanks to TH-cam I've discovered Black Marching bands and I love them!!! Especially Southern, love their brass! Love the Dancing Dolls! Alabama kicks ass too! I watch all their videos over and over again.
Reminds me of my Grambling State Univ. days. I wouldn’t trade it for the world!! I have a master’s degree with a wonderful career all due to my start at a HBCU! Thank you GSU!!
The worst thing for me about being in the marching band in high school. was those hot uniforms we had to have on and they only washed them twice: once at the beginning of marching season and once at the end. I went to white schools, so are marching was pretty much what Ricky showed 1st. If I went a black school, I probably would of had a heat stroke doing all of that in that dancing in those uniforms. I think they were 100% polyester.
Bruh you ain't lying 😂 ... I play the tenors and bass drum and snare but mainly play tenors and they heavy and them hot ass band suits ain't helping neither 😂😂
I actually have been in a band before. 4 years as a trumpet player @Pattiearlandquintin Snyder. But I guess that you don't realize that this video was meant to be funny as well.
Absolutely right, we don't care nothing about the game lol All we're there for is Pregame, Half-time, our favorite songs from the stands, and the 5th Quarter! "Did y'all win?" "I don't know. BUT THE BAND TORE IT UP!!" LOLOLOLOLOLOL FAMU C/O 2004 #RatterPride #iLoveFAMU
Rickey is hilarious but very accurate! I had the pleasure of marching in a corp style band in high school and a traditional style band in college. Both were an amazing experience to me and unforgettable. There is no need for negativity on either side of the fence. No matter how you look at it, the definition of MUSIC is in the center of both styles and influences. Music will forever be abstract so accept it for what it is! Shout out the the South Carolina State University Marching 101 for the great years. 1000000000!!!
Man if you ain't NEVER seen those HBCU's bands it's a great show. It's rich in culture and history. They took something and made it their own. I have a friend I knew in high school who went on to become the drum major at Clark atlanta. It's the greatest lol Rickey smashed it 😂😂😂
Yah-Lanskey yeah maybe he is funnier but by a lil and they both not funny for real for real, but also I’m not just taking dudes word. We don’t know who made that joke, just speculation
I'm pretty sure I'm in a black band. all I know is its fucking lit. literally our director wrote a dab into the work for all the wind players and every year the seniors create a funk dance with anything they want and it's awesome
Hello all. I would like to say I love this skit. I didn't see anything racist about it. I had the pleasure of matching with both types of bands. I marched for Oklahoma State University. I also marched for a Louisiana All-Star Band. I even marched in Drum Corps for a few years. All of these groups have different styles, players,, and audiences of all colors. I don't see how one could be so upset about a skit. I'm also a Music Ed. Major. And to be honest some days I wanna listen to Rap, somedays it might be country. Or even classical. I just try to enjoy the music because that's all the performer is aiming for.
I'm not racist but black marching bands are far more entertaining. I don't care if you call me racist you don't see people staying at halftime to watch predominantly white bands. They leave. People go to football games just to watch hbcu bands. Dosent make m racist for pointing out what the crowd considers "more entertaining"
Right I've been in marching bands in black middle school and high school but I'm at grove city high and they play the same old boring songs if I was in it will be some p-funky in there
They're so boring they never win contest or even make finals. Look Hebron or marcus highschool. Those are good bands not some dumb shit like playing in place and marching in a block.
2212fred I have to disagree...When people come to Ohio State games they always stay to watch the band...We have one of the best bands in the country...I absolutely love corp style...It's classier and more spot on, , but there is also show style for those who like a showier show....I think both are ok, but my taste is a little more refined...hence my taste in band style....
+Angie Williams I agree with you on that, but Jacksonville State University is way better than Ohio State. JSU does the same style the same style as the bands +Carlos Lopez mentioned, with the exception of our dance line piece every year. Like this past year, we played Salvation is Created, Verdi's Dies Irae, Requiem for a Dream, Gonna Live Till I Die, Death and Transfiguration, Elsa's Procession to the Cathedral, Ode to Joy, and Mvt 3 from John Rutter's "Gloria" in our show called "Salvation is Created: A Journey from Darkness Into Light". That's the kinda of show style I'm partial to. The story line-ish shows.
True. My back be killing after marching with my bass drum. Our private percussion teacher told me and the bass leader who has the other biggest bass drum in the band to try not to gangster lean. But that bass drum is heavy. I can't even see over it.
I loved listening to Ricky back in the day here in bham. The church announcements he did was priceless! And he’s right HBC’s bands are show bands that put on a helluva show!!
Very funny. I'm a Jenison High School Band Booster and marching band parent to a trumpet player. Very different styles of marching, music and shows. We always loved the way the black bands danced and jazzed things up when I was growing up in the 60s and 70s. My older siblings were marching band, old school white marching bands. These days the Bands of America and Michigan Competing Bands Association have some very good shows. Broken Arrow from Oklahoma put on Zo one year and had tuba players riding bicycles and playing at the same time. It was based on the Wizard of Oz. Jenison, burned Joan of Arc at the stake right on the field in 2012, smoke, flames, everything: look for the video. Jenison had a very tough, entertaining show, Tempest's Fury, in 2011. Check out there Jenison High School Bands of America Grand Nationals 2011 performance to see what I mean. They won first place at the MCBA state finals the last three years. I do enjoy the kind of shows from the movie Drumline though. And Ricky is spot on. I love him. Going to share this with my white marching band friends. Note: even Jenison has a diversity of races represented in their band, so technically, it's a mixed, but mostly white marching band. = ) At the BOA regionals in Pontiac in 2011, there some great black bands doing the white show thing and they did it very well.
My ex-wife is from B.A. and I did intern teaching at that school. I don't think too highly of either one. Plenty of bands that rank behind them, should be placed well ahead of them. They are terribly over-rated ! Here is a fact that very few people know about; they have a VERY small number of students make the either of the 2 Oklahoma All State Bands. Pretty sad when you consider they are the largest high school in the state of Oklahoma and likely the largest number of high school band students enrolled. Throw in another scenario, Tulsa Union High School (2nd largest high school in Oklahoma), just down the road from B.A. follows similar suit.
Allan Burns Broken Arrow does seem to have the favor of BOA judges, but they are a very good band. They march well, they play well. I agree, there are equally good bands who never place in the top 10 even. As far as it being non educational, are you speaking BOA? Or do you mean the BOA style marching band shows? I know that Jenison starts in June and those kids work their back ends off learning complex music and marching all the way through mid November. They train and condition daily, once school starts, having only Sunday off. Their program involves rigorous discipline that teaches many valuable life lessons. Their marching band experience provides memories that will last a life time.
Black people do everything soulful that's just our culture. Whether it's dancing, roller skating, marching, singing, cooking, fighting, playing sports etc we put our heart & soul into it. Every race has something to bring to the table we should love & accept one another. I love how disciplined white people are in studying, learning, speech, they have awesome organization skills. I love Chinese culture, Mexican culture etc.
very true. we are just some beautifully soulful people! But I agree with you that EVERY culture has something to bring to the table. We ought to appreciate our individual cultures and ALSO the cultures of others....we can do more together than we can separate. All of mankind is beautiful and we can learn from each other if we take those opportunities to look beyond ourselves. GOD made US ALL "beautiful and wonderful and marvelous in HIS SIGHT" - Psalm 139:13-14. Thanks for sharing sister. God's love and blessing to you, yours and all. God Bless!!!
I know the entire routine. I could do this entire joke myself I have watched this video so many times and it is STILL something I watch once a month and STILL laugh! Absolutely hilarious.
I was 19 and I watched a black college march for the first time in the NY Thanksgiving parade. I am 50 and I still can transport myself there and feel the emotion as I felt every move, kick and note. It was there I became a fan
People who are "internet dummies" aka "keyboard warriors" need brain surgery or mind intervention. It's the curse of living 90% of your life through the internet. They don't know how to be human💯
LOL I was in Tennessee State University Marching Band aka The Aristocrat of Bands, I must say he 90% correct about the bands. Go check out TSU vs JSU southern heritage, you'll see what Rickey talking about
J15 N dci is better for musicality, but hbcu style is better for entertainment. my band is a hybrid band so we experience both. i personally like show/hbcu style more.
What do you mean the bass drums never get any love? We would be utterly unable to do pretty much anything without them. We even use them to keep time during field entry instead of snares.
You know a marching band is official when they have either a saxophone solo in it, or the band major is dancing harder than the dance team girls around him.
I didn't go to an HBCU (always wanted to), but I couldn't wait to watch the Black bands when I was little (rare times when they aired an HBCU game)! They used to get it!!
Halftime show at a black college IS the reason why you go. The football game is just a formality

And his side was good

Check out there Jenison High School Bands of America Grand Nationals 2011 performance to see what I mean. They won first place at the MCBA state finals the last three years. I do enjoy the kind of shows from the movie Drumline though. And Ricky is spot on. I love him. Going to share this with my white marching band friends. Note: even Jenison has a diversity of races represented in their band, so technically, it's a mixed, but mostly white marching band. = ) At the BOA regionals in Pontiac in 2011, there some great black bands doing the white show thing and they did it very well.
I wish B.O.A. would GO - a-way !
Allan Burns
Why?
My ex-wife is from B.A. and I did intern teaching at that school. I don't think too highly of either one. Plenty of bands that rank behind them, should be placed well ahead of them. They are terribly over-rated ! Here is a fact that very few people know about; they have a VERY small number of students make the either of the 2 Oklahoma All State Bands. Pretty sad when you consider they are the largest high school in the state of Oklahoma and likely the largest number of high school band students enrolled. Throw in another scenario, Tulsa Union High School (2nd largest high school in Oklahoma), just down the road from B.A. follows similar suit.

. . .. . it is a bunch of bullshit ! nothing educational about it !
Allan Burns
Broken Arrow does seem to have the favor of BOA judges, but they are a very good band.
+Doll Phases Just to be clear, are you suggesting that white people are culturally more studious than black/Asian/Latino.... people?
No, not at all that's why I said black people... :)
+Bill Johnson lol you almost started another war
very true. we are just some beautifully soulful people!
I love this

I know the entire routine. I could do this entire joke myself I have watched this video so many times and it is STILL something I watch once a month and STILL laugh! Absolutely hilarious.

I was 19 and I watched a black college march for the first time in the NY Thanksgiving parade. I am 50 and I still can transport myself there and feel the emotion as I felt every move, kick and note. It was there I became a fan

What happen to the concept of laughing at something or at someone for just being funny.
jeffery lalonde The lack of humor in our country is killing me inside.
You are telling the truth. The US is becoming soulless smh
Adam Lacy cause everyone so gosh darn sensitive
People who are "internet dummies" aka "keyboard warriors" need brain surgery or mind intervention. It's the curse of living 90% of your life through the internet. They don't know how to be human💯
cuz nowadays people are so goddamn sensitive. Every little thing makes people upset
Comedy Hype brought me here. Steve Brown says Ricky stole this bit.
You cant make a stolen joke better, it still makes it stolen. Cut the games Bama Made
No hate, just a comparison between white and black bands. Not everything is hate.
Exactly. Many people need some serious brain reconstruction up in here. They cannot process things well at all💯
How could he forget GRAMBLING State lol
When he hit that drum major I was gone 💀💀
Now why did he leave off the baddest band all the way from Jaguarland "The Human Jukebox" !!!

Being from 'Bama, this is really funny.
LOL I was in Tennessee State University Marching Band aka The Aristocrat of Bands, I must say he 90% correct about the bands. Go check out TSU vs JSU southern heritage, you'll see what Rickey talking about
The color guard gets no love and we do the most work!!!!!

Fuck u because yall dont have to play and march at the same time all yall do is twerll a fucking flag bitch
Im in a a "white band " but this is great lol
Thank you! Someone who didn't take offense to what he was saying lol
I am too. I personally like being in a white band.
HBCU best type of marching style there is
Zach Young what does hbcu mean??
+kiakill16 Historically Black College/University
Debatable. Watch Broken Arrow or Santa Clara Vanguard, then talk.
J15 N dci is better for musicality, but hbcu style is better for entertainment. my band is a hybrid band so we experience both. i personally like show/hbcu style more.
this is sooo accurate!
That dip we he turned for the black band😂😂😂💯👌
What do you mean the bass drums never get any love? We would be utterly unable to do pretty much anything without them. We even use them to keep time during field entry instead of snares.
Lol That's HBCU !!! Proud AAMU student!!!
Had me dying Fam lmao. Thanks for the video and shout out to Mr. Smiley
Anyone who knows band well should really appreciate this video. I certainly do.
It looked like he was trying to do the hornet lean back lol
You know a marching band is official when they have either a saxophone solo in it, or the band major is dancing harder than the dance team girls around him.
Where can I find the version of this song with the same intro? In halftime it starts differently and I really like this intro.
I would have loved to have gotten the opportunity to see Rickey live in stand up!!
I go to a HBCU and this is extremely accurate! They are dope!
I watched a black marching band play Bobby Brown's "Humpin Around" they played & danced the shit out of that song.
its true...we be killing it and be tired right after halftime😂
Jeeeeeez. His high steps are amazing
I didn't go to an HBCU (always wanted to), but I couldn't wait to watch the Black bands when I was little (rare times when they aired an HBCU game)! They used to get it!!
Man he nailed this shit. Black band vs white band, a really big difference during the halftime show. Even the music is alot different. Lol
