During that snow me and 3 of my friends drove my Chevette into the Market Basket parking lot (now HEB) at the corner of 2222 and Burnet Rd and did donuts in the snow for an hour. It was the most fun that Chevette ever saw.
It snowed after my husband's funeral. We were rushing to get it done. Then I had to take people to the airport and they ended up being snowed in. I skidded into the back end of some guy's car at a stop light on my way home. I barely touched him, but he was really mean to me, yelling that I should have left more room. I lost it. I started crying. It just really topped off a bad week.
Dang I'm so sorry. I'm sure your husband was an amazing man and you have my deepest condolences. I moved in 2021 as it was snowing and it was a disaster. I hope that you are keeping well and if it snows again I hope you stay safe
native austinite, I was 6 in '86, made the hugest snowman of my life, well one of them anyway. mom has pictures, we got 11 inches of snow that winter. this was hilarious! thanks! there was a moment i was scared for a pedestrian getting rammed by a car acting like he was going to catch it lol glad he didn't get run over
I was here for that one. They said it was going to hit on a Thursday, then it stalled out west. Everyone was let out early on Thursday. Friday they said it's coming, but everyone was saying, that's what you said yesterday. Then it started to snow. Everyone started heading home, but by then it was too late. Upper deck of I35 was pretty much a parking lot for at least one day. But it sure was pretty around town. Quiet too.
Went back to campus in Jan ' 1973 for a placement test. Austin was shut down for three days. Was living at Jester at the time. Had a great time partying for three days with strangers...:)
I was 6 during this storm. Funny. That intersection is Bluebonnet and Lamar. I grew up a stones throw from there. I was probably outside playing when they filmed this.
Wow good job locating that! I was wondering where that was and you're right! That building in the background at 4:44 is now the location of Mr. Natural and Bluebonnet Animal Hospital. I was 15 at the time, living in New York, but I live not even a mile north of there now on Lamar. Imagine if they had gone down the street and put the camera on you and said, "Now we have little Ginger Man 512 here, enjoying the snow..."
@@ChrisZ70 Well Austin just got another BIG winter storm. I drove through this intersection again. It wasn’t this bad. COA used little bobcat tractors to plow the road.
I think that was the snowstorm that started in the afternoon and by evening the city was basically shut down. We had concert tickets to see George Thorogood and the Delaware Destroyers that night and it got canceled due to the snowstorm.
36 years later, aw shit here we go again
😂

Wasn't there a Ponchos Mexican restaurant in that shopping center back then?

Love this piece of Austin's history. The conclusion of the UT reporter was funny...yes...we should all carry ice skates

@@ChrisZ70 that was a veterinarian back then too. Sadly the owners died in a murder suicide.
@@gingerman5123 Wow.
We lived in a punk rock house on East 12th then. It didn't have heat and the toilets froze over ! Good times
I was working at Captain's Oyster Bar at 183 and North Lamar, it was a shrimp boat replica.
Back when Austin, was affiliated and synonymous with Texas hospitality…
and thats why austin shuts down during a freeze lol
I was stranded at work at Safeway at Balconies and 183.
Lived in Taylor.
