The R46 set could be repaired and returned to service, but since the R46’s will soon be replaced by the R211’s, the MTA will most likely still scrap it anyway. The R142 set is much sadder though, as it was a NEW TECH set. 6347 was damaged beyond repair by the blazing inferno that took the life of train op Garret Goble, so it’s definitely gonna have to be scrapped. R142 Cars 6346, 6348, 6349, and 6350 however might either find a new life as pump trains or be sent to a museum to be preserved. Cars 6366-6370 which were repaired and returned to service might be wrapped in memory of Goble.

Unitized sets of 4 or 5 cars are here to stay. They are reliable enough so that having to take a whole set out of service for a defect on one car isn't a major issue. There is significant cost savings in not having as many cabs as there would be with single cars or even married pairs and fewer cabs means more seating for passengers as well.
