Eugene Stoner's AR-10 and AR-15 use an operating mechanism that is often called "gas impingement," but which is actually a cleverly structured gas piston located within the bolt carrier. Gas is tapped form the barrel and moved all the way back to just behind the chamber, where it enters the bolt carrier. There the carrier and bolt act as the two parts of a sealed piston, and when the bolt carrier moves rearward the cam pin forces the bolt head to rotate and unlock. The expanding gas is then vented out through holes in the side of the bolt carrier. By locating the piston on the same axis as the barrel, the harmonics are improved and the overall weight of the gun can be reduced by using the gas piston elements as mass in the bolt carrier assembly. Contrary to the old adage "it shits where it eats," the operating gasses are not vented into the magazine or chamber, and the system has proven to be very reliable.

Even though I have know how this system works for many years, the way Ian explained it makes it much clearer of the how and why.

A very clever design that has proven itself to be durable and reliable in all conditions. Eugene Stoner was definitely ahead of his time with the design and ergonomics of the AR-15. Thanks Ian as always👍

Huh, so I've been living a lie.

Henceforth all shall accept this dogma: the AR15 operates on a "clever gas piston". The term "DI" shall no longer be used to describe the AR15. (Tongue in cheek )

This video hands down let me truly visualize the Stoner system.

So, if the gas impinges DIRECTLY on the bolt carrier, how is that not direct impingement? The only difference between this and the MAS 49 is that the gas tube acts as the piston in the French design while the Bolt itself acts as a piston in the AR-10/15. You keep wanting to split hairs on this one and you do not acknowledge that the IMPINGEMENT is on the CARRIER... therefore it is direct. If anything, the AR-15 is closer to direct impingement in that it impinges directly on both the bolt and the carrier.

IMHO, one of the great benefits to this system is the ability to clean the gas piston easily while the rifle is field-stripped. All the bits you really need to clean just pop out easily. My AR requires much less effort to clean than any other rifle I own.

I'm a total gun noob (I've still yet to own a gun lol) but I've been watching your channel for the past couple of years and the engineering and operating aspects of weapons I've found to be very fascinating. Thanks for the content, I'm learning more and more with every video.

So basically the simplest, most efficient, most potentially accurate, most unencumbered by weight design of an auto loading rifle platform that has yet to exist?

It's one of those things where those familiar with the system know the bolt is really a piston, but common (incorrect) nomenclature has already been established so it's referred to as D.I.

And He spoke to his disciples, saying "nay, it cannot be direct impingement, for behold... there is a piston."

Very nice explanation. A couple other advantages that come from this design:

I love how Ian's delivery is completely different in these instructional videos. Even when he's explaining exactly the same things in "regular" FW videos, he speaks conversationally, like you're sitting at the other side of the table. In these, his cadence totally changes; he sounds like the narrator of a classroom filmstrip from the 1980s.

Nowadays after learning more about how the AR-15 gas system is different from actual direct impingement, I tried to give the system some personal nicknames like "vent impingement", "piston impingement", or "indirect impingement" since it's functionally a hybrid of an impingement gas tube and an internal piston where the gas is vented.

The gas seal rings on the bolt remind me of the compression rings on a piston engine.

I love all of stoner's designs. So far ahead of their time, simple and truly ingenious.
