    I am just starting to play piano. I have played bass (guitar) and acoustic guitar for many years but I have always wanted to play the piano my entire life and have finally gotten around to doing it and am really enjoying it. My favorite song of all time is yesterday. I have actually seen Paul McCartney perform this song live 5 times in my lifetime. I really enjoyed this lesson and the tutorial was very helpful. I was actually thinking about how I wanted to approach this song and you gave me some new ideas and also helped reinforce some things I was thinking I could and should do with the song. Thank you for the master class.

    Hi Tom, what a beautiful rendition, it sings itself on the piano.
    I got the sheet music but played around with it and actually found that if you root it on the left hand and arpeggiate the chords instead of the notes on the sheet, it sounds quite rich and full. I am now a convert to chord based playing thanks to your previous tutorials.

      He’s right, there’s some terrible videos out there, more than some. I’m just getting started. I have a basic, distorted, disjointed understanding of music theory, but just enough to not get totally wrecked.
      Like everything else, everyone, each person has their own perspective on everything. You have to interpret things from within yourself, use the tools you have and learn and integrate new tools whenever possible. It’s a never ending process.
      The simplest way to achieve anything is just that, keep it simple, then push your limits one step at a time until the complex becomes simple. Discipline and patience are required, there’s no other way around it.

    Fantastic tutorial, your playing and explanation is top notch. Sadly as a beginner it’s way ahead of me, maybe in a few years I will come back to this video and if I am anywhere as good as you I will be one happy fella. However, at 74 my musical ability is somewhat limited and time isn’t on my side. Thank you for showing me how it should be done!

      One thing that is in our control is progress- not perfection! Start by chording out the song. Play chords nicely and you are 60 percent there. As for the final 40 percent, check out our video on Groove to bring your chords to life. Two steps you'll crack it in a year. That's 80 percent done. Now the final 20 percent. That takes 3 lifetimes so any of us who think we are there - we've rushed the process because we are two lives behind in the real work needed to get that! And most importantly enjoy the process. 😀

    Don’t diss the lit up piano keys. I’m legally blind and it’s the only way I can see what keys are being played. So I think it’s very helpful. I very much enjoy the way you teach though. Wish you had those lighted keys.
    Also, I have small hands with arthritis, so it is very difficult for me to play octaves. I have to be on the very edge of the white keys. This means I really can’t play anything in between the octaves with my other fingers. Do you have any tips on this situation?

    • @contemporaryschoolofpiano
      @contemporaryschoolofpiano  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Thank you so much for participating in our channel. Just to clarify what I meant by that comment - it's not the fact the notes light up that is the issue! That is completely fine, it's the learning by Rote manner that doesn't work for popular music. Pop music consists of three main aspects, Chords, Groove and Melody - learning how to use your ear to navigate these areas is crucial to success in playing this genre of music. Playing from a score/sheet music or midi lit keys is too limited, especially in the case of anyone with sight difficulties, the importance of developing ear skills is even more important. We've taught legally blind students on many occasions, and this approach really works. Best of luck with it, keep inspiring us all with your musical journey and I thank you for participating in our channel. Regarding your other challenges, please feel free to reach out to us at www.contemporaryschoolofpiano.com - and we can give you some specialist advice regarding your other technical issues, that you will find very helpful and liberating!

    I don’t think cords with no melody is the way to go for this song. It doesn’t sound much like the song is supposed to.

    • @contemporaryschoolofpiano
      @contemporaryschoolofpiano  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Chords only is best used when you are singing the melody. Which is how the Beatles would have played it. But without the tune, much of this song is missing. Playing the progression is a very useful practice technique.
