- We take a look at Holbeck Hall Hotel that disappeared on the 5th June 1993, some 500ft down the cliff side into Scarborough Bay. The hall was a former residence that later became Scarborough's only four star hotel. A serious landslide brought an end to it's chapter, with the world's media watching on.

I was the gardener at the holbeck hall before and when it fell into the sea. No I didn’t dig too much in the rose garden but the week before there was a massive step in the garden where it sunk
I remember hearing about you from Dave and Nick.I worked with them at Wrea Head back in '95-'96.
@@yorkshirecoastadventures1657 I remember the day it collapsed and they had us in there removing furniture and wine 😹 Dave was a bit odd but Nick was a gentle giant
Didin't the council chop down all the trees and bushes around the area a couple of years before the issues started due to some flasher, which caused loss of stability for the ground and drainage.
@@davidfrank1344 haha that’s the way they plan resets now days their super smart about it they are.
maybe you over watered the plants? 🙃
An estate agent would pass that off as "minor settling, nothing to worry about".
That´s what one agent tried to fob my Dad off with when he was looking over a house next to the golf course on the headland above Scalby. I was immediately suspicious of the agent´s phoney character and didn´t need to wait for the surveyor´s negative report.
It was a lovely hotel, so welcoming. I went to several events there and always had a good time. I remember sitting in front of a roaring fire in the grate of the hall one chilly winters evening , and on another occasion being served warm black cherries (in kirsch I believe) for a dessert one evening at dinner. It was gorgeous. Many happy memories. I was so sorry to see its sad fate on the news.
I remember that Richard Whitely broadcast like it was yesterday. Such a shame as it was such a spectacular building but it shows the fragiles tate of those cliffs and how errosion prone they actually are. Great use of the drone and photo overlays too, brilliant work, I really loved this video.
Had the first night and a few more, of our honeymoon here at Holbeck Hall Hotel in September 1972. Went back yearly for Anniversary weekends. A superb hotel and we were sooooo sad when we stood on the beach and watched it and the Bridal Suite fall into the sea, had hoped to have our Golden Wedding Anniversary there next year (2022) Maybe The Wrea Head Hall Hotel
Wow how fascinating, must have been one of those sureal moments unfolding before your eyes, if you were there at the time, how sad that happened.
Thanks for the brillient informative video Darren😊
Really sad to watch that stunning building and hotel disappear the way it did, I remember watching it on Calendar News. Richard W was mates with my best friend who worked for Yorkshire TV, Great vlog Darren, love how you fade in and out with old photos and footage, brings the whole piece alive.
I was fortunate to have a work colleague who held a private pilots licence at the time. We took off from Sherburn and flew over the site. We circuled around a few times and were fortunate to witness part of the building sliding into the sea.
Very fortunate, plane and boat were the only way to get a good look at damage.
I was dating a Lancashire lass at the time and we had a wonderful week in Scarborough….we were having a drink at the Spa theatre in the evening and heard a huge crash as the front of the hotel fell down the cliff….all of the theatre goers came running out to see what was happening (pointless really as it was pitch black!) and this included the Krankies who were performing there that night!!!
This still remains the most memorable moment of my life!!!
Had a Holland’s pie and chips afterwards to round it off:-))
Fkn awesome, living it large, Pie and Chips AND the Krankies..........wow. LOL I'll tell you what, I may jest, but, how good was life back then compared to today, they can shove the fkn lot in a furnace today for me.
@@markholroyde9412 It was a holiday of a lifetime- I’d also seen the Chuckle Brothers perform at the Corner Cafe the night before!
Happy times:-))
@@NedPooleD818 Wonderful mate, wonderful, I look at the mess today and think thank goodness I was a teen in the late 70's/80's, dont regret one thing, cheers.
I remember Warships. Characteristic Maybach buzz. I disliked them for causing the demise of Bulleid Pacifics.
@@robinfryer479 Hi Robin, sadly the only place I could see Bullied Pacifics as a trainspotter was at Barry scrapyard- great though that so many have survived and we had 35018 through my local station this Summer- will be posting a video on my channel of this:-))
Fascinating reconstruction of a sad, though predictable, event. Thank you.
Wow! I thought this was just natural cliff erosion, I never knew it was unsafe from being built. Great video, you can really see where the ground completely sank.
Das war sicherlich ein schönes großartiges Hotel. Schade drum, aber wenn's sein muss.
Dankeschön für das schöne Video Darren 👍
Yet another fantastic, expertly edited, Scarborough video. I remember this well, I first heard from a local and we jumped in the car and shot over from Leeds to watch the horror unfold! It was an unforgettable sight that I hope never to see again…. History just falling away 😭😭
I live about 500 yards from where it once stood , I remember vividly it going down , you should check Knipe point out ! , RIP Richard Whiteley
Fantastic vlog as always Darren. Love all your vlogs, special edits and effects. Your time & effort all pays of. No one does anything like you. Definitely cream of the crop. Well put together and all the information you give us, and the time and effort you put into this. 5 *****
Yes I remember the news footage at the time. I was actually at that car park a few days ago enjoying the scenery - I didn’t realise it was same place. Further down the coast they have closed a road (between Osgoodby and Cayton Bay) to traffic due to possible landslides and also had to divert the original coastal footpath.
The history of this building amounts to a cliffhanger ending.
My kind of joke.
@@AdventureMe Edgy humour....................... I'll get me coat!
Couldn't be more true!!!
Once again a fancinating look at history. I'm of to Scarborough in a few weeks and will make a point of looking at the places you have shown! Keep up the good work, so interesting.
My wife Janet and I stayed at Holbeck Hall quite a few times - the last trip was mid May 1993. We were in the very top level room of the hotel looking out straight across the bay to the harbour in south bay Scarborough. We loved the clifftop walk from the pathway right outside the gradens of Holbeck, down the cliffs at a gentle angle arriving by the outdoor swimming pool south bay. Lovely place and such a shame to see it's demise - but can't help thinking we had a lucky escape. I do recall seeing cracks in the pathways as we strode down the cliffs each morning - that whole coastline stretching down to Flamborough Head has been eroding at a rapid pace. Much of my childhood saw the summer holidays off school with us trekking to Crows Nest caravan site between Filey and Cayton Bay. Clifftop walks we used to use daily have GONE and at many remaining places are just dangerous having lost many metres to erosion during my lifetime.
I remember this so well - we came from Guisborough and watched it from the beach.
This is a beautifully made video.
I was watching this with my grandad when I was a young lad I wouldn't of been far away lol
Great video. I remember watching it on Calendar reported by the late, much missed Richard Whiteley.
I remember it too
Yes the Mayor of wetwang
Twice-nightly Whiteley!
Mother nature did this INSTEAD OF THE COUNCIL FOR A CHANGE .
I remember this event. I never understood why it was resold after the original owner died if the land wasn't safe why was it not condemned. I'm glad nature has it to herself now.
Nice video and a great bit of work blending in todays scene with Twice Nightly Whitely as it happened. I was in Scarborough on holiday at the time, I missed seeing it as it happened but did see the aftermath later in the day and then the following morning after most of it had come down. Even though it was a long time ago I still always look out to that spot whenever I'm in Scarborough and think back.
I was there yesterday, stood in the same spot,I was trying to imagine exactly what the hotel looked like, your videos are superb mate. ❤️🤘👌
Thanks mate
Absolutely fascinating video I remember watching it on the news the scale of the land slip was frightening thanks for another fantastic video 😀
Wow I vaguely remember that. Must have been something to have actually watched it go down. Thank you for sharing. Drone footage brilliant.
Absolutely brilliant. I’ve seen that sort of thing here in Australia and watched homes falling into sea. Thanks so much for the share. Please stay safe and take care
A great little video. Thanks for the memories, I well remember the newsreel pictures as my sister in law worked in the hotel kitchen. I saw what was left of what had been a lovely hotel with views that took your breath away the following day. A sad loss for Scarborough and a warning of what was to come later just a little further south on the same cliffs at Knipe Point where several houses were lost. .
Thanks Rod
Omg I remember watching this on the news with Richard Whitely. He was the king of Calendar news. Wow how time has flown. It was such a beautiful hotel but sadly due to erosion of the cliff face it was gone forever. I bet the owners were crying and the people who had worked there and stayed there ... So sad. Richard Whitely was a legend in news reporting and it was sad to hear of his passing in June 2005 and he was only 61. He had suffered with Pneumonia but didn't really recover well and due to them having to do an operation on his heart because of endocarditis he then passed away. So sad ... Darren you have really helped me with memories since I started watching your videos and I can only say a massive thank you for that .. We all as a family watched in Horror as we had always gone to Scarborough when we were kids with mum and dad. We did have the best holidays back then and at Butlins which I have seen your videos about that ..
I was on a family holiday there when that happened, we were on the seafront & saw some of the landslide, mother nature is a powerful force, such a shame though,
Love how you superimpose images Darren, great video tfs 👍
Thank you very much for the upload I remember it being on the news at the time.
Great video. Can remember going to see this at the time, was also in Scarborough just a couple of weeks back and looked up at the former hotel site from below. Can't believe its so long ago, seems like yesterday, must be getting old!
Another terrific film Darren, again the fade in and out, superimposed pictures really do add to the overall imagery. By the way , Richard Whitley (RIP) was a Baildon lad as was his Yorkshire TV colleague Austin Mitchell who sadly passed away this week also a Baildonian. Regards Richard ( Baildon).
awww gees , did Austin Mitchell pass away. gosh, i remember him on tv aswell
I remember been in Scarborough when it fell down the cliff side.

I was watching withy grandad on the beach watching this I live in Scarborough it's bringing back memories. Good work with the video thanks
I was a choirboy at st Mary’s church in sboro and every Xmas eve we used to go and sing midnight carols ther. My dad was the watchman on the lighthouse and he turned up for his watch and immediately noticed something wasn’t right wiv the lay of the land so he called the coastguard and that is wher the whole saga began. Nice video.
Great video work, you really brought it back to life for a few seconds, thank you.
I remember it well watching the news. Thanks for the video.
cheers mate. looks like they've done a lot of stabilisation work since then, was a big old landslide for the UK.
Someone I know had her wedding reception booked at the hotel for a few weeks later and had to frantically phone round to find an alternative. There would have been plenty of others in the same position as it was quite a popular venue for such events.
We attended a wedding in Scarborough on that very day and it was kind of overshadowed by the hotel collapse ! Further up that stretch of coastline is Knipe Point, Osgodby where bungalows started slipping into the sea as well.
That is an amazing story very well portrayed by yourself. I had never heard about this one but it made a damn good video, well done Darren.
Thank you for the tour of this unfortunate ending of this fabulous hotel. Must of been a first class place to stay. Another trip back in time. Thank you Darren. Cheers mate! 🏴😊👍🇺🇸
Very interesting. I remember Adrian Edmonson making a joke in one of the Bottom Live shows about how himself and Rik had stayed in a hotel in Scarborough which subsequently collapsed.
I never saw Holbeck Hall in real life but I had always wanted to. I grew up in a flat in a similar style house outside Manchester and this probably gave me the fascination for this type of architecture. I remember being really sad when the story of its demise came on the BBC lunchtime news - almost like hearing the news of the death of a favourite celebrity you never got to meet. Luckily it was amongst the headlines and I had the chance to get a VHS tape ready to record the item when it came on. The coverage was longer and showed more than Richard Whiteley's piece. I do still have this recording. I enjoyed your video here.
I remember standing near the harbour with my family watching the hotel crumbling in front of us, A sight ill never forget.
Nicely done dude.. I remember the event when it showed on TV back in 93... I was 31 at the time.
That was very very interesting. I never knew. How fascinating. Cheers, well done.
Amazing presentation! Enjoyed it enormously - congratulations on making the video
Thanks mate
Great vlog as always, living here in Scarborough sometimes you forget how nice the views are around here only to be reminded by a great shot. I remember watching this happen on the TV as a 6 year old amazed at what I was watching. If you ever want to get round to doing any of the railway bits around here like Driffield-Malton etc give me a shout lol.
We forget how beautiful it is, because of all the smack head in the town and the council ripping the beauty out of it. 🤣
@@BallisticBurns well.... thats a story for another day... very true tho... 😂
Great video, and although I'm too young to remember it happening I do vaguely remember it being talked about in a coastal erosion geography lesson at school. I believe the A165 south of Scarborough has had to be moved onto a newer alignment for similar reasons.
Darren, always enjoy your videos keep up the good work thank you
Steve
The cliff brought the house down! I remember seeing this on the news and was shocked how fast it collapsed.
your videos are amazing man. honestly all local to my areas for once bravo man.
Thanks James
Lovely camera / editing work, and a fascinating story!
Thank you
I remember my mum and dad inviting me over to see this, as they had a holiday home in Flixton.
I was a few days late and didn't see a great deal :) but a wreck. Back then I used to travel around with friends watch chimneys been blown up etc.
That's a better thing to see. I remember watching some wooden holiday homes on a fall off a cliff on that coast with walls missing and furniture falling down a cliff but I can't remember where? I also remember some guy making an art exhibition out to one of the holiday homes with flashing lights etc. It was very odd.
A good effort, as a scarborough resident. You did a good job. Well researched.
Thanks Ian
Remember it well . Don’t seem that long ago, just showed how time flyes
Same here, I didn’t realise it was going on towards 30 years!!
Yeah I thought this happened in the late 90s or early 2000s. Not 1993
Another great, interesting video, thanks. Keep them coming.
We spend a few days there in 1993 and checked out the day before it slipped. We'd commented at the time about the massive steps that had appeared in the footpaths below the hotel as the ground had moved. The day after we got back, my mum's friend rang us asking what was the name of that hotel we stayed in in Scarborough, and to check the news... It was very sad to see it go as it was a lovely building, inside and out.
Thanks for watching.
i remember it well seeing it i wasnt to far away from it with my dad most of my familly are and still living in scarbrough great vid brings back memorys
Hiya Darren, great video. Yes I remember the landslip quite well. I used to visit scarbro alot and the slip changed the look of the coastline afterwards. A good friend got a job with Norwest Holst down on Dewsbury Road, in Leeds and she used to visit the site as they used to take samples of the slip site presumably to ensure its continuing safety over the years. It is strange though that nowt else near has collapsed, but obvs I'm no geologist or surveyer. Good trip down memory lane and sad to see the late great Mr Whiteley who is missed by many TV viewers who "grew up" with him. Look forward to the next one, best wishes shame there are 2 x 👎though! Ben 🚍🚌🙏🇬🇧
Another great video. Amazing footage.
We had booked with the kids into Haven Holiday Park in Cayton bay couple of days after. The remaining rump of the hotel and the mess below could be seen from the town, it was the talk everywhere.
I saw that report, i was 8. LOVE YOUR CONTENT! keep up the fantastic work
Awesome! Thank you!
Another great video. I remember seeing it at the time, but afterwards it all got a little bit ott, I believe there was a church service to give prayers to the demise of the hotel.
I can remember being on holiday in Scarborough when this was happening and walking along a cliff path just to north of the hotel and coming to a dead end where the path had been blocked off, looking up and seeing half a hotel hanging off the cliff edge..!!
So they allow people to walk across the pathway at the base of the slope, but its considered unsafe due to subsidence further up the slope, that doesn't make sense of health and safety, a landslide further up would quickly bury that pathway.
It's stable, just the top section still has caverns etc underneath. Not safe enough to walk around.
Sad event but great video. Thanks for taking the time to create this type of content for us to view.
Glad you enjoyed it!
A friend mine bought a terraced house in Burnley next to the Station Burnley Barracks he had a stoney garden ,did he he went get the deeds at the solicitors and he was given two sets of deeds one for his house and one for The Yorkshire Hotel no longer standing demolished in a rush a turf put over.He couldn't believe he got a free pub .He hired two Poles (thats lads)to dig out the rocky foundations and returf it he is a builder so he new what to do.
An amazing vlog!
Thanks Nick. More to come soon.
Loved watching this, i already knew about this hotel and how it had slipped down...but couldnt resist another watch...its crazy! Thanks for putting this together, best wishes, Sonique 😀
Glad you enjoyed it. Love the name btw.
@@AdventureMe 👍
Ha, I was there through the week on a day trip from a stay in Flamborough, never been past the spa as an adult but went hunting for old pool area as I had vague childhood recollections of it after finding old pics online, met a lovely old couple who talked about the Hotel collapse which I do remember from TV back then. I drove up to locate the carpark I could see from the old pool area, It was then I wandered over to find we were at that exact location, I was showing the other half that the kerbs will have been the entrance, fab video with the aerial footage,
Nice video of a sad event. Also caught glimpses of the now filled in south bay swimming pool. When I went swimming there it was filled with sea water and always quite cold.
I remember it been on the Tellybox !
I love the original owners stance. 'Dont care, build it, when I'm dead it can go' :-)
How could he sleep at night 😂
@@pippatyce5824 No f@%ks given I guess !!
Yes I remember seeing the hotel a few years before it collapsed, and then seeing it live on tv, thanks for the video, 👍👍.
I remember it on TV. A work colleague had it booked for his wedding reception which was due to take place in the autumn of that year.
Yes I remember the cancelled weddings on tv
Hi Darren, plenty of near by houses, hope their insurance isn't sky high, if indeed they can get insurance. That coast is very prone to land slips etc and the east coast in general due to sea erosion of the cliff base's. There is always a fly in the ointment. Cheers matey, DougT the Mancs pensioner.
Absolutely loved this upload the footage to creative was magnificent
Very interesting and well put together!
I remember this happening. It was covered by all major TV and radio news outlets. I think it was our local station that, quite purposefully, played “Slip Sliding Away” by Paul Simon in tribute after the collapse.
That's quite funny.
My parents live near there ,I was there watching some of this happen ! ,thanks for the video 😊👍
Another great video Darren!
I wonder if the owner of the house next door to this is worried!
Considering the original owner knew the ground was unsafe, it did well to survive 110 years!
Apparently not. He's had surveys done and all safe.
@@AdventureMe if you look at the picture of the site now, up near the top, you can see where a section has slightly dropped, exposing a sandy coloured layer. I'm surprised the land hasn't had huge pins inserted to strengthen the hill, but then again it must be safe as there are afew footpaths around it and at the bottom.
Also, did you notice the old lido pool in the old picture? Now just a filled in concrete "art" feature. How sad it's gone.
The overlays are so fascinating.
Thanks for watching. More to come like this.
Great graphic overlays. I remember it on the news. Gosh.
Memories. From 1973 till its end, I enjoyed time here as a guest of the family. I can recall 1 Halloween in 1976, where we played hide and seek. I was the last to be found, as I had hidden in a chimney of 1 fireplace and sat for ages on top of the back boiler (this was a huge fireplace). Only to get a real telling off as I climbed down. I was covered in soot, but then dragged a ploom out with me. As you may gather, everyone was reminded of it each Halloween, so it was not possible to forget. Fond times. I wonder if there is any port barrels on the ground from the old cellar? They would be worth lots if still full.
Thanks for the memories. Fun times.
@@AdventureMe it sure was nice
Was on a family holiday at the nearby Primrose Valley (yes I've seen the Filey videos 😂) We went to the site with all the crowds trying to get a good view amongst all the media there at the time!
Great video. A friend of mine had his wedding reception there a year before it collapsed.
Thanks for watching. More to come.
This was owned by Charles Laughton's family, he of The Private Life of Henry the Eighth, The Hunchback of Notre Dame etc. The menu cards had as their motif Laughton as Henry the Eighth.
I remember it well, it broke my heart.

What a stunning building that was, imagine the value of that today with that view. if it was safe, 2.5mill.
Sad story but bloke knew "whats up" from the day he built it it seems, good for him.
