    Hi, Dr Shwetha, I have been watching your videos on dental materials while revising for my university exams. I have to say this that you are very good at teaching and try to complete the explanation of a topic within a short time. Your videos have helped me in understanding the subject even better. Thank you :)

    Hi :) Thank you for your time and help!
    What is the difference between gypsum used in buildings and gypsum used in dentistry (type IV)? I mean these gypsum products have different ingredients right? For example, a gypsum powder+water mixture for buildings is easily breakable after it's dry out, but a gypsum powder+water mixture used in dentistry is much harder after it's dry out. So these 2 gypsum powders must be different. So what extra ingredients do dentistry gypsum powders contain that makes dentistry gypsum powders much more harder than an average gypsum powder for building some home interior design elements? What makes dentistry gypsum powders much harder? Are those extra ingredients secrets of the dentistry gypsum producers?

      Thanks for appreciating 🌼 Gypsum used in construction and dental gypsum, their basic composition is same. The difference is in the crystal shape. Construction gypsum has beta hemihydrate crystals while type IV gypsum is in the form of alpha hemihydrate Crystals. I have mentioned the difference in properties between the two.
      Now, construction gypsum can be closely compared to type II gypsum. Though, its setting time n other properties are slightly different bcoz of addition of modifiers.

    Mam can u pls tell the composition of type4,5 gypsum products( in addition to alpha hemihydrate what are all the components present in it)

    • @drshwetaprostho6301
      @drshwetaprostho6301  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi! 🌻 All the dental stones ( type 3,4,5) share same chem. composition as Ca sulfate hemihydrate (main) with some modifiers. The difference in properties is due to the difference in size and density of crystals( obtained by manufacturing process), explained in video also. High strength stones (4,5) compose of largest, most dense Crystals. This reduce excess water. This decreases w/p ratio and increases compressive strength.
