You look at Chicago and you look at it's problems and, let's be honest, it's "south" and "west" side urban youths that are "the problem." What would cure the problem? We've watched faith leaders and community organizers and teachers union presidents all take hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars in pursuit of the elusive answer..... I think if more urban youths knew how special Chicago is/was and how that automatically makes THEM special, they may develop a better sense of community pride. I don't think they know the slightest history of their city.

    • @Liquorice_Monster

As someone who rides the L to work every day, yeah, it kinda sucks because the trains are very loud and incredibly dirty. They're full of crackheads and bums, people get robbed on the L constantly, the trains are late more often than they're on time, and the CTA employees are rude and don't care about anything. They'll let people smoke cigarettes or marijuana on the train car, they let homeless people spit on the floor or pass out drunk on the seats. But at the same time, I can't help but kind of love the L too. I especially appreciate the way it goes around the Loop. There is something captivating about it.

One awesome thing about this video is that it highlights the creativity and resilience of many beleaguered and even oppressed peoples who have found their pride of place in and around Chicago. Unfortunately, that wasn’t true for the native peoples who were driven out (or worse!) when the European settlers came to this area. I certainly don’t want to minimize that tragic injustice against those beautiful peoples, but really just say how awed I am by what this video highlights about Chicago and it’s amazing neighborhoods and peoples!

This popped up on my queue and I had every intention of skipping away to another video. 2hrs later, I'm here saying "man, I got to make it back to Chicago!"
As a native New Yorker, my answer to the love of trains question is love, hate it or indifferent, there is an unspoken and inspiring investment to one's ability to be able to move about freely that comes with riding the train. Getting from one neighborhood to the next with relative ease and limitless connection and possibility is awe inspiring and reassuringly human. Thank you for this work. Another example is a Cicero stop next to the L where there is a car lot (it makes me wonder if this is being done on purpose)

A shame that the Els in New York weren't appreciated like this and demolished instead. Yes, we have the Dual Contract Els in the outer boroughs but it's not the same as seeing Manhattan from a moving train or as seeing an amazing working relic of the nineteenth century still functioning from the street below. My ambition is therefore to try and rebuild the old New York Els.

This video was nice but an somewhat a fairytale yes there are beautiful places to attend n go in our city but until chicago stop trying to glamortize downtown and north to make it chicago when its not chicago will continue to lose people coming it is time for those in office to understand downtown n north is not enuff to make chicago chicago anymore n the more they understand you cannot continue to glamourfy that area n leave the rest of the city like a bum n dont care nice video but i notice once it came to the south not much to say because the city south is treated like garbage does not look as pretty as downtown and north and yet they make the prices extreme in the nice areas but push people who cant afford to live in the bad areas n it is bu 2021 toay folding on the city of chicago To the point if they do not start seeing they cant have there water and sugar anymore due to then ignoring the entire city n stop trying to plague chicago as downtown and north the violence will not change ....This video is an old chicago where u could go wherever in peace 2021 chicago u better watch your back it is no JOKE ......how i know i live here n im tired of the people in office using chicago money specifically on downtown and north im tired of the people in office using the poor to pay the taxes to rich up downtown even more but leave the rest of the city like smelly dookie ... Im tired of the people in office taking money to do extras to bring more money here to glamourtize downtown but sit in office year after year an do nothing about H O M E L E S S .. and lastly other states are caring enough to give stimulus to those going broke yet chicago is loving the boot u out your home so investors n those with money can buy you out and ruin your life an career yet will not help the residents but wanna build a casino thats MY CHICAGO WHO ELSE AGREE............

@@sassyd8738 oh honey I definitely know what you mean!
I’m originally from the Chicago Suburbs, but I used to live on the south side near 63rd and Talman. The former mayors of Chicago… Daley Sr. and Jr. made it an AGENDA to push propaganda about caring for the wealthy areas of downtown and north Chicago, because of RED LINING!
My mom and dad’s fathers worked extra hard to move the families out of Chicago to the suburbs and fought against discrimination in the town of Bolingbrook in the early 1970s… AND THEY WON. Unfortunately, Daley Jr. started another AGENDA of relocating out families from Cabrini Projects and similar projects to many parts of the suburbs towns by GIVING MONEY AND VOUCHERS to the suburban mayors in the 1990s.
Crook County still does this and will continue to use SMOKE N MIRRORS to cover up their corruption and biases. 🚩💯👀💅🏾

I am old enough to remember the voice before the man featured in the video as the voice of CTA trains. Before him, the voice was that of a woman with a thick nasal Chicago accent who quite obviously was a heavy smoker. Her voice was very raspy. She tried her hardest to sound nice and friendly, but I see why the CTA switched out her voice for what they have now. He definitely sounds nicer and friendlier. lol.

as a kid growing up in chicago the CTA was a way of life to get around for even those who had cars. I remember catching the L on 43rd street to go to comiskey park, wrigley field, lincoln park etc or get off on englewood to shop 63rd st. A or B line. the B line took you further east to Stoney Island and the A line took you to 63rd and Ashland when we moved further east. The best thing about the L was they were 95% on time. When I took my wife who was born/raised in Los Angeles she loved riding the L. I miss chicago.

Many memories of a native south sider. Took the Halsted Bus at 99th to 79th, transferred to 63rd, got on the Englewood L B-train, and rode to Addison, a B stop, got off and walked a block to Wrigley to see the Cubs. We were 11 0r 12, 3 of us, and went alone. Did it for 2 years and never had a problem. Years later took the Howard and transferred to Racine and attended U o I Circle. Also took the Howard to Lake Street and the Lake Street L to Harlem to the Oak Park YMCA. It was, and is, an easy system to use. You can get on a Station and ride all day without paying again. You can ride to 95th, get off and cross the platform and ride downtown again. One of my memories is coming in from the north on the old, non Air conditioned cars, on a hot summer day, and descending into the tunnel around Armitage. You got a blast of cool air as you entered the tunnel that felt great. I have to disagree with Mr. Baer. We did call the underground parts of the system the subway. Otherwise a well done, informative and well produced video. Thank you from an old Chicagoan.
