Review: Beyond Oasis (Genesis) - Overhyped or Underrated?

- In this review, I'm looking at Beyond Oasis for the Sega Genesis. This is an overhead action adventure game most similar to the 2D Legend of Zelda games. It gets a lot of praise, but is it deserved? Tune in and find out.

Just stumbled across this game on a Facebook post. I’d never heard of this game until today. Wow!
Man I loved this game so much, played through it so many times. Got all the secret weapons. The atmosphere and music (especially for bossfights.) still live with me today.
You are absaloutely right about the shaky platforming though and you probably didn't even play the worst platforming section. There was a secret path in the mountains.
There is a lot more streets of rage in this game. From The jump kick to the normal kick and also many sounds are direct from streets of rage. (Like many Sound effects and one of the death crys)
I loved this game as a kid, this and also the prequel on Saturn.
The fact that you thought using buttons a variety of ways to increase your options for combat and movement was an issue blew me away. I’ll give you a thumbs up for giving exposure with an honest review to a game i love, but man do our opinions differ.
I can understand the reasons why you didn't like this game, but you are probably the first, I respect your reasons.
Still, this game has nothing to do with something like Zelda at all, and if needed, we should always go back to what actually inspired Zelda which is Tower of Druaga. Not all top-down games are inspired by one single game, just like Metal Slug isn't inspired by Contra, nor Contra is inspired entirely by any run-and-gun before it.
Beyond Oasis is often cited as top tier in the console's library and while I can understand your personal points, know that Story of Thor 2 for the Saturn is even better, it's actually a masterpiece, but I will say that, you shouldn't try it, because you won't like that game.
Just because I played it as a kid and enjoyed it a few more times as an adult doesn't mean you have to try it or even like it.
In any case, I won't give a thumbs down just because of that, in fact, being frank is always good, so thumbs up!
I just finished this game and loved every second of it! I'm seriously considering buying a Saturn just to play the prequel. The game alone is over $100.
It feels like an arcade ARPG. Not many hours of gameplay but the gameplay itself and the graphics and atmosphere are so good that you can replay it many times without being bored.
It's nowhere near average, that's for sure.

Stating Golden Axe Warrior is better than this is...weird at best x)

You can use healing in the 100 level gauntlet. Summon sprite by aiming at the water/ blood blobs.

Great video. I agree with what you said. It's a shame. The game had a lot of promise. It just needed some polish. :D
As action RPGs on the Mega Drive go I was more into Landstalker. A much larger world to explore with a variety of towns and villages, and though it's not for everyone, the isometric pseudo-3D world made everything feel a lot more substantial and less flat. I will say that the graphics in Story of Thor had a lot of flare and its combat was more involved, so I can see how it could appeal more to some people.
If you're looking for a game in the genre that aims for a conflict that isn't simply good versus evil then there's always Soleil, though it's a bit clumsily told (which can additionally be muddied by whichever localisation the version may be) and I'm not sure that the mechanics always work for what it's trying to say.
I played this long ago and at first I thought it was kinda mid. I just didn't love it and I didn't get why it got such high scores in the magazines. Then I rented it again because my classmate liked it and after I read thru the entire manual again (love how Major Video had the manuals for an extra buck) I decided I really hadn't given it a fair shot. I'm not saying you didn't. I just didn't myself. After taking the time to learn the controls and get the timing right I started to have fun with it. The platforming does suck tho. I never beat it but I did grab a digital copy a couple years ago so maybe I will someday. I do enjoy these games. I have always liked these action adventure RPG hybrids. I definitely prefer Crusader Of Centy, Ax Battler, Sylvan Tale, Wonder Boy 3: The Dragon's Trap, Alundra, and Landstalker but I think Beyond Oasis is a worthy entry in the genre. It's at least worth trying on presentation alone
Agree! I have said this about breath of the wild. Even that rock boss is similar to a mini boss in BOTW. Also the 4 spirits thing.
I think your dislikes are very minimal and the positives outweigh the negatives by far.

Nice insightful review! Bosses in this game look incredible but it’s a shame the story is a letdown. And yeah, whenever I hear intense death screams in games I can’t help picturing the voice actor shrieking into a microphone in a room somewhere 😁
i wish it would have stayed exclusive to japan but why did it come west
The weird thing is that this is called a Zelda-clone, which it is, but the last two zeldas feel more like this... Especially the weapons and items systems.

I generally liked this game. The music is probably what impressed me the least, which is really odd when you consider Koshiro's track record. These tracks just tend to be so low-energy and forgettable, totally unsuited to the action.
I thought the dungeon music was pretty decent, but it was very forgettable.
People expects something more impactful from Koshiro, but it many games he worked on, he tries to capture the game's soul, I didn't know that Story of Thor 2 had anything to do with the Streets of Rage composer as a kid, only recently I learnt about that, the game's soundtrack is minimalistic, he seems to always try something that fits the game, even if the results are a far cry from one game to another.
Amazing game. Better than Zelda.

The combat is sometimes interesting. Visuals are nice. Everything else I found mediocre. About as good as Brainlord.
Meh just a bunch of nitpicks. Maybe some nostalgia for me but it’s my favorite sega game. And I mean for the 16bit sega genesis era its a masterpiece!
