It looked like she was using a First Contact era phaser rifle, or Type III phaser, and it runs out of ammo so fast? Even turned up to "vaporize" mode it should have a few more shots in it than that. And why vaporize when the regular ol' "kill" setting would do the job and not blow through your power cell so fast? Heck a Type II hand phaser doesn't run out of power like that so what's the point of a big rifle? And not to mention what happened to beam weapons? Why does Kurtzman hate beams so much? Personal phasers used to be beam weapons.
There are certain things that had to happen in the scene, I get it. She had to get injured, and she had to fight off the intruders. Okay. So how do phaser rifles suddenly having terrible power capacity play into that? Why couldn't this have been accomplished with the vastly superior weapons they had THIRTY YEARS AGO?

Enterprise F is being decommissioned on that same red lady display. So there's a 4th enterprise in 30 years about to be launched?
The edge of federation space can be reached while the captain takes a nap? Does that mean if he takes a day off they can go all the way to the Delta quadrant?
Crusher has a son with a British accent? What happened to Wesley? Is Beverly just cloning Jack Crusher now?
Picard's comm badge in season 1 was the DS9/VOY/Generations comm badge, does he collect comm badges? Why would it go to the older style TNG badge and not the newer style also used on the Enterprise D?
Season 1 - At short notice Riker obtains an entire fleet of the best federations ships, Season 3 - Riker can't even get 1 ship.

A big plot point last season was how Seven wanted to be in Starfleet but was refused, but then got promoted to Captain (by a full Admiral so it should've stuck) of the Stargazer. There was no sign that it's not what she wanted or that it wouldn't be permanent. Come next season, she's the first officer of a Borg-bigoted captain (which makes no sense because SHE is an ex-Borg, why would she even be on the ship at all let alone be his first officer) who feels like she was forced into Starfleet by Janeway and Picard and wastes no time in getting kicked out by hijacking the Titan. Despite wanting for literally two decades to be in Starfleet. I think it's more of an excuse to have her join the "team" later on but still.

Everything is handwaving. Need a starship? Sure, just get on one by pretending to hold an inspection, and not only any old ship, the fastest in StarFleet--not like anyone checks orders or anything. Need to get to the edge of Federation space in a few hours from Earth? Well, first: have Seven on the ship. Second: have a captain that doesn't really run the ship--he just sits around reading logs and eating weird steak. Third: forget about distance, just let them arrive an impossible distance in a few hours (this is a classic JJ Abrams move.) The sheer stupidity that we are supposed to swallow because these writers can't write. We are just supposed to consume this nonsense because Star Trek once was good and we are hoping like hell there will be some miracle and it will be good again. It makes me angry that these guys own this franchise and just flush it down the toilet because they need content to stream.

He doesn't have to get a ship just because he's a captain. Star Trek IV, V, & VI you had Spock and Scotty, both Captains, serving under Kirk. Even today, in the American Navy, there are only 300+ ships, yet we have thousands of Captains. As a organization gets bigger, the support, training, and logistics commands outnumber ship commands. For example, the Department Chair of...History, at Starfleet Academy, probably a Captain. Earth Spacedock, probably a Captain. JAG (legal) Command on Vulcan, probably a Captain.
      Hope that helps! Blessings!

That JJ Abrams "mystery box" where everything's a mystery maguffin which won't be revealed until the last episode when it will make no sense and you've already wasted 10 hours following meaningless plot threads. Stealing from every vaguely popular TV series, movie and video game franchise (that the writers played or play, because you just know that many of the writers are millennials and hate reading *gasp* books!!). Loads of plot, but very little story. Characters don't behave like they used to. I'm sure we'll find out that everyone is recovering from some trauma too.
Seriously. In the original series, there was very little plot, but loads of story, interesting character and interesting ideas. Nu Trek is some kind of money laundering service to the producers. But whatever, the worse part is according to showrunner Terry Matalas, the show takes place exactly 250 years after the launch of the NX-01, and so 250 years of the Federation....but um...the NX-01 was pre-Federation. My problem with the computer virus thing is that when you think about it with Best Of Both Worlds it makes the Borg look weak when they were so powerful in those early episodes. Because there's no indication of this in Best Of Both Worlds that they had some problem with their navigational systems because of some computer virus the Borg gave the Enterprise. So it comes across when you think about it that it wasn't that big of a problem that they easily dealt with when the Borg's technology is supposed to be far beyond their capabilities as said in Q Who and they were so difficult to defeat they had to ask for Q's help. It just lessens the Borg's effectiveness in my opinion. So yeah I have reason to doubt that the writing will be smart for the rest of the season if this is an indication.

Then she challenges his orders in the very next scene When he does finally relieve her of duty for insubordination, it has nothing to do with her commandeering the ship - its about the shuttle and persuading him. When has a captain ever really cared about a shuttle, and persuading isn't insubordinate behavior.

And the Dave Cullen whose opinions so many people 'respect' is just obsessed (as they rest are) with woke agenda. The reason why they like this series is mainly because a) it's not as bad as S1 or S2 or Discovery, and b) because it does not have a woke agenda (whatever that is). Every bad review he gives is based mainly on this perception of woke. So, whenever it isn't noticeably woke, it's now a masterpiece. They have no critical skills to judge or say what is actually good about the show. Their live stream last night was just all about the memberberries. So, if you have never seen the show before, is there anything actually there of interest? I mean, even the aesthetics are not likeable. Watch Foundation or Raised by Wolves for that. Where's the story for one hours viewing. The so-called 'great ending' is not very interesting if you are new to the franchise, and wasn't interesting if you have anyway.

@@Mr.Edd3905 Not my first time watching no. I've been a Trek fan since I was a kid.
They're not exactly wrong about the "Woke" agenda in that when it comes to ticking boxes, being so called "Progressive" etc, that becomes the main focus above all else.
Season 1 and 2 of Picard were truly horrific along with Discovery.
S3 in it's first episode has the problem of just being too dark still with the sets being too generic.
I mean the corridors on the Titan, could literally be pulled from any old Sci-Fi franchise. So yeah, the aesthetics of the show are still poor from a set design stand point. They have brightened up the space shots this season.
We got some really nice beauty shots of the ships featured.
The characters, especially Riker felt more like their originals. I was just watching Red Letter Media, and they were saying about how seamlessly, despite the 10 year gap, Shatner, Nimoy, Kelly etc all just slipped back into their roles as if they'd never left when they did the Motion Picture.
When Picard came back, he wasn't the same character, but that was at the behest of Stewart himself so...
He still isn't the same character, although he's certainly been written closer to TNG Picard.
It so far hasn't been cringeworthy where you can't help but wince at every scene, but it wasn't outstanding in anyway, but it is an improvement which I think no one was expecting tbh

Did you see the latest Ep2 teaser clip? I'm starting to believe that what we're seeing is not all that it's cracked up to be. E.g. "Neo-constitution class" Titan, Raffi using a TOS communicator, many other references to the TOS movies like being led to believe Crusher's son may be Picard's son ala Kirk in ST 2. And in the teaser, we have Klingons and even the federation going after the Crushers without reason. Even the Crusher kid doesn't know why this is happening. Circle back to the beginning of the episode. We have almost the exact same space scene at the beginning in ep. 3 as we did in ep. 1 -- and, remember, the episode 1 scene was... yes... a DREAM. And this last episodes opening even evokes the same "dream-like" feeling. Now, throw in Moriarty. Last we saw this character, he was put in a ship in a bottle after we were led to believe that he had escaped the holodeck. What if this TNG episode was turned on it's head. That is, what if the crew of TNG are now in a holodeck ship in a bottle, themselves? That may explain these inconsistencies throughout ep. 1. I'm sure Terry Matalis wouldn't be that sloppy. This may explain why it was weird when Captain Shaw characterized Riker and Picard as "cowboys" (as if , again, they were the same characters as on TOS) . Again, it all feels a bit off to me. I don't think it's simply gratuitous memberberries from all of canon just thrown in like fruit salad. What if Moriarty had the last laugh? I think it would be brilliant if this type of huge twist happened -- wiping clean the slate of Seasons 1 & 2 at minimum. However, if something like this does happen, I'm hoping it happens early in the season so we get to see full-blown TNG for the rest of the season -- with proper lighting!! PLEASE... Make it so!!

people forget Terry Matalas was involved in season 2 of Picard , and didn't correct the countless mistakes in that season . so yes I think it's just sloppiness

@@NitpickingNerd That's true. But he wasn't the show-runner in season 2. Mistakes or not, there seems to be more focus, cohesiveness and purpose in the writing in season 3 in just the first episode alone. That, coupled with the fact that so many cynical critics out there (who have seen all of the episodes) are praising the show. In addition, they are saying that even the smallest minutia of detail is all connected throughout the plot lines in a very clever way. Too early to tell in the first episode, but I suspect there is some element of "set-up" in some of the details we think are inconsistent or sloppy. It seems too deliberate.

The more I think about it, the more it absolutely doesn't make sense that Seven of Nine would ever be in Starfleet as a command officer. Line officers weren't just people wearing red uniforms piloting ships; they had a specific personality type that put them in that uniform. They were, in TNG anyways, type A personality types that had a spine, were ambitious, socially adept, and learned how to fly ships as a basic profession. In junior officers, they look like Lavell or Young Riker or Locarno (not Tom Paris).
Now, look at Seven as a whole. In Voyager, she started off as a Borg liason, so not so great at diplomacy in the first place. Then she became a civilian scientist. For most of the show, she was largely aloof of other characters and formed bonds with a couple of people at most. While she absolutely has a spine, I would not say she ever became socially adept; her coolness is part of her charm. If you add her characterization in Picard, she was a vigilante, which law enforcement like Starfleet frown upon.
So, on a conceptual level, it makes no sense for her to be a First Officer because she's not that great with people. She's good at yelling at them, I guess, but anyone can do that. Good leaders inspire others to do their jobs well. She does make for a fine Chief Engineer though and that might have served the plot better.
