    You were fortunate it was only the 5 volt regulator that went open circuit. I was expecting more problems. I see you put a reasonable amount of heat-sink compound on the MOSFET driver IC. Overall a very good restoration... WELL DONE!!! 10/10

    You not conect an vhf antena and not test the output power, that maybe its wrong.... Its a bad idea press the talk butom with out an antena....

    • @TheTheo58
      @TheTheo58 5 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Output power is tested with a watt meter either a stand alone or a combined SWR/RFpower meter with a dummy load on the antenna end. An antenna is needed when testing for SWR when the transceiver is keyed up. In any case not have an independence load connected to the output, can either damage or destroy the final output stage.

    I love it!!! :) the way he check the voltage regulator with AVO meter, Paint the heat-sink, wash the plastic components and PCB with paint thinner and crank the *walkie-talkie* (VHF Marine) without antenna or dummy load.......... That is superb......... I love a pro job.....

    • @TheTheo58
      @TheTheo58 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      He did a fine job troubleshooting, after the clean up locating the faulty voltage regulator where there was still no power. Since the power was present at the terminals the fault was further within. Not having an antenna or dummy load connected to the SO-239 connector, when he keyed the mic was a no no.

    Your job is well done but by grace use a real soldering iron, the one that is much too strong for cms component, you will all burn.
    In addition, you should never use an empty radio, you need a connected antenna, do not forget the SWR that can kill the components of your radio.

    You can’t turn it on without an antenna, unless there is some kind of protection there, you can only check for an equivalent load of 50 ohms. There is an assembly at the exit, if it burns, it costs half the cost of this walkie-talkie.

    Try not to press the PTT when where is no load (antenna) connected, even though it has a vswr resistant module on the output, icom's are notorious for burning output amps.

    • @leosedf
      @leosedf 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kenzpenz All transmitters (of any kind) require a 50Ω load on the output or you usually damage the output transistor. In this case it has an integrated module (it's a tiny ceramic board with a few transistors inside, it's on the back covered by a black plastic) which has higher resistance to burning compared to a simple transistor. However all that power get's consumed in heat form and usually burns even the module or drops it's performance. Most modern ones now have some protection like motorola's but it's more expensive. The bad thing is that those modules are also expensive and many of them hard to find these days.

И нигде не видел собственно ремонта электронной части. . Странно, что эти вещи попадаются всегда исправными. Или же неисправными- тогда их просто не включают. И да, рацию без антенны не включают. Что он там пытался поймать без антенны?

    Probably let the magic smoke out of the PA. those things can be quite expensive.
    when one works on ANY 2 way device you need to have a dummy load attached to the radio. first to protect the PA "brick" and second to prevent any stray RF from being transmitted with out identification.
    It would be nice to explain what you washed the plastics in as well as what solvent you used for cleaning the circuit boards. Also an explanation as to what type of contamination was found (fresh water Lakes and rivers or Salt water)
    35 years expeirience working with Commercial, Maritime and Aviation electronics. Seen it all, tried repairing amature mistakes sometimes with success other times not.

    • How come he power supplies the unit before checking the fuse first?
    • What type of solvent is he using to clean the printed circuits with?
    • Voltage regulators cannot be completely checked like a transistor. They are ICs not single transistors. Besides he already knew that the unit didn’t work initially. Why did he not check the regulator beforehand?
    • He is testing the Transmitter without antenna or dummy load!!!! The RF hybrid output stage (big black brick in the front of the printed circuit: SC - 1302), usually burns out doing that (max Standing Waves Ratio), and then there is no repair worth the effort.
    • He tests with his finger for overheated components as the unit does not come alive after sampling. But didn’t he see before dissembling the the that the fuse was OK?. A melted semiconductor would be obvious with a broken fuse. Unless open circuit off cause.

    how is it possible that after washing with the brush and who knows with what solvent liquid it has not been able to stand the medium frequencies! the printed circuit connectors are very delicate, he could have made dozens of errors, it seems so strange that that radio still works, more than anything tried in tx without antenna tuned on that specific band .... it seems to me all so unlikely since he has soldered again the female pl259 on the panel, looking carefully there could also be a short circuit between the central and the mass ... it all seems so unlikely !!

      sure that yes: To test a transceiver in addition to the power supply, you must connect a suitable antenna; Otherwise there is the risk of damaging the transmitter and not completely testing the apparatus, as an alternative to the antenna you can use a suitable load, called artificial load!
