Holy shit I cant believe I need to change this comment. Something that’s still a bit hard for me to grasp about being a TH-camr is that you’ll never be able to please everyone. Ppl will always find some shit to say even if you make your point very clear. I never said sub is bad, I never said dub was flawless. I never made fun of sub watchers as a whole, I made it very clear that I was only shitting on the ones who make fun of dub watchers. Im not trying to be disrespectful but I made that very clear, I can’t believe people didn’t get that. You can be so clear and people will still find something to complain about. If you somehow managed to find a way to think that I was making fun of all sub watchers you didn’t pay attention to the video. Idc if you like dub or not you cannot tell me that the scenes I showed in that video are poorly acted. I’m not saying you have to d ride them, but you need to admit that they aren’t “trash.” That was the point I was trying to make in the video. I still can’t believe people got mad about it lmao of all my videos this is the one that I figured no one would be mad at Yeah obviously I never said dub was perfect and amazing and flawless, there are tons of dub voices that I don’t like. But I don’t let one or two voices that I don’t like make me say “oh the whole dub is ass”
Dub Voice Acting is mid or even trash while Japanese voice acting for the characters is leagues better and makes it more enjoyable to watch and hear. For reading the subtitles, well I don't know about you but I can read the subtitles nearly instantly most of the time, and I can watch what is going on at the same time too, since I always watch sub and not dub
@@Roop_ZXY bro did not even watch the video 💀 anyways, dub or sub, both have potential to be great performances. it does suck dub gets a bad reputation and people apply that to the whole dub community, but as shown in the video, there are multiple dubbed anime with amazing performances by the voice actors. i found this video really enjoyable with you pointing out good dubs exist! i appreciate you taking the time to make this video
@Roop_ZXY Did you not watch the video or read their comment? Like no one gives a flying f*ck if you like sub and hate dub, that's not what the video is even about, they don't hate either just the people who think their "superior" because they watch sub
One thing I heard about that Robin Dub scream, is that normally when they record voice acting, it goes through a second stage of touch-ups where they adjust the audio clips to make them sound exactly how they want. When Robin's English VA did that scream, she did it so well, that they barely touched it after if at all. They just threw it in raw because it just hits SO HARD
i chose to watch one piece in dub mainly cuz of two reasons like most of the cast is just dbz voice actors animes feel faster paced when in dub, its definitely placebo or something like that but maybe its because i dont have to read and watch at the same time
As someone who watches both subs and dubs and has watched One Piece both subbed and dubbed, I can wholeheartedly agree that the One Piece dub is underrated. I especially love Robin, Franky, and Brook's English voices.
Fr and i only watched in dub up until the anime stopped dubbing it is so good. I think sub is objectively better but dub is still so good. Also I will die on this hill, robins dub voice in the iconic I want to live line is better than the sub.
@@AuraLeafstorm I prefer most of the English voices of the originals. Especially the females who often have high pitch over exaggerated over the top annoying voices
Dub haters are some of the dumbest people in the fandom, because one they ONLY go after english dubs, not say italtian dubs of anime. And two and most importantly they are ungodly hostile towards people who dare disgree with them, i made a post on twitter a few days ago in regards to how i thought pokemon was much better when 4kids was around because modern pokemon is just a 1 for 1 translation of the sub most of the time, how many people you do think had a rational calm reponse and how many people start calling me names? it was mostly the latter, people should be allowed to enjoy what they want without being harassed. Also i'm like 30 i grew up with anime dubs from the 90's and 80's which if people think dubs are bad now they would blow a gasket if they saw how actually bad they were in the 80's
Exactly you never hear about actual shity dubs like I've watched Indonesian dubs it doesn't even sound like they have a studio but no apparently English dub and it always comes from English fans of anime who seem to think this is the worst thing since the crucifixion of God
In Germany most anime fans watch sub and there are a lot that also have prejudices against German dubs. I think you may only hear people talk shit about the English dub, because you mostly talk with people whos native language is English.
Instant sub. This is beautiful. As a dub only watcher im so glad to see others agree with me. Biggest example is the robin "i want to live" scene. Felt NOTHING during the japanese dub. English dub literally made me cry. And im man enough to admit it.
I really dont understand the people who love Krillins dub but cringe at Usopp's Dub Like Brother ITS THE SAME VOICE 😭😭 Dub Haters are just another level of stupid but DB Dub Lovers who hate anything else in Dub are like 1000% worse.
during the alabasta arc (watching in dub) when Vivi is screaming at the royal and rebel army to stop fighting at the top of the clocktower was gut-wrenching. watching her country fall apart was absolutely heart breaking and it made her cry out in desperation. it was a devastating scene and hit my heart to it's core.
Absolutely. Franky’s English voice sounds exactly what he should sound like, gruff and masculine. His japanese voice always sounded awkward and soft to me. Hopefully his new japanese va kills it
@@CP-zn2mgjapanese franky has a very flamboyant voice. Which adds richness to his character. Saying franky should be grumpy and masculine is stereotyping in a boring way.
As a sub watcher who only watched a few episodes of the dub (with friends and family who struggle to read subtitles) and some clips I found on TH-cam, I gotta say, it isn’t as bad as LOTS of people make it out to be. I wouldn’t even consider it bad. The dub is pretty enjoyable. Don’t get me wrong, I still love the sub voices, I grew up listening to them, but the dub is great as well. While some voices may disappoint/annoy some people, that isn’t a dub only thing. The sub also has voices that can be annoying. Dub One Piece deserves more love.
I switch between sub and dub depending on the series. I do prefer the sub, though, because there is a lot of nuance in the japanese intonation that is able to subtly convey emotions that isnt present in English.
I think the dub is only bad at the beginning. Like up until past skypia (to me) because it feels like the VA's aren't confident in their roles. Beyond though. Peak. Utter peak
@@Kingdo99aYeah I see where you’re coming from. I do prefer the sub as well. Some of the jokes are also lost when translated into English because of the language barrier but can’t do much about that lol. I wonder how the dub handles it.
I think people’s hate on Luffy’s English VA is unfair. Colleen Clinkenbeard (his Eng VA) performance as Luffy is very out of her normal range of voice acting. For reference she also voices Erza from Fairy Tail or Momo from MHA, whose voices sound similar to most her roles. Mayumi Tanaka’s performance is also easily the best in the sub imo, and not to say she isn’t an excellent voice actor, but her voice as Luffy can also be heard in many of her other roles. Not identically obviously but much more so than Colleens voice as Luffy. Some people might say “so what? They should have just got someone who’s could’ve used a voice they were better with.” To those people I say: Toei and Oda listened to clips and chose the cast, English speaking or not, it was their decision. Last thing people never seem to mention is that Luffy’s English voice improves a lot over time, by enies lobby, his voice is much more refined and consistent.
Colleen is the only voice actor that made me shed tears just from screaming as Lucy (specifically during Marineford). She’s so much better than people give her credit for
What I love is you hear Luffy's voice just get deeper between pre-timeskip and post timeskip. Really helps sell the gradual character progression for Luffy regarding him becoming a more reliable leader instead of a naïve kid.
Proud dub-watcher 'til the day I die. I've never seen a single episode of One Piece (subbed or dubbed) but that "I WANT TO LIVE" is so iconic. The English VA absolutely nailed it.
As a fellow dub watcher, I’m happy that you made this! A sub watcher shouldn’t consider themselves as “better” than us unless they could understand an anime without subtitles…
16:01 That's from the Enies Lobby arc, one of the best pre time skip arcs, trust me it's so good. They dubbed that back in 2014, Funimation was very behind because 4kids had One Piece first.
Both vas for luffy sub and the dub are really good at getting his voice. I think people shit on the dub well for one piece is maybe the 4kids dub or something
"Characters with the same dub VA sound too similar" meanwhile christopher r. sabat in dragon ball (not to mention characters like kuwabara, zoro, and yami):
Honestly, both sub and dub are good. The English dub for DIO and Diavolo in JJBA are the best voice takes on a character I've heard, and the Japanese dub for Hajime no Ippo just feels better fitting for the characters in general imo. At the end of the day, it's just taste and that should be respected.
I was first introduced to One Piece through the dub. For me, it wasn't even a matter of preference- it was just the one that I was used to, and so it became the definitive version for me. I started watching in dub, and when the show comes to end, I hope I can finish watching it in dub. Glad to see another dub defender out here! If you wanted to make another video on this subject, I think it would be interesting to talk about the way the dub translates certain lines! The thought came to mind because of the Corazon scene you shared- it reminded me of how disappointed I was that his "I love you!" line became "I love you, kid!" in the dub. For me, it made the line feel more impersonal and didn't have the same impact. But then, there are some lines in the dub that I think are so much funnier and better than in the sub, like the scene in Wano where Law is talking about the Germa raid suit (sorry if that's a spoiler, don't look up what this refers to if you don't want to know yet) and in the sub, Usopp says something like "how do you know so much about this?!" But in the dub, he says "Law, you sound like a nerd!" Which KILLED me. :'D
@@BlueMHart I LOVE THAT SCENE DUBBD LMAO LAW OVER HERE FANBOYING AND USOPP LIKE “LAW YOU SOUND LIKE A NERD” fuckin comedy gold Thanks for being respectful asf it’s nice to have someone comment who isn’t being a dick 😭😭
To be honest. Robin's dub voice actress screaming *"I WANT TO LIVE"* are just felt more emotional. (I know the japanese voice actress also did a great job) but the dub version felt different. And also without the Dub then we wouldn't have Picolo and Zorro's memable voice because funny enough they are both voiced by the same guy.. And also the sub has the fucking same squeeky annoying anime girl voices. What do they mean same in dub?..
It was never an argument about quality, it was an argument that showed the true nature of Anime fans Japan fetish. Anime fans use there experience watching the original sub as a way to make them seem more culturally aware and enlightened while not actually knowing anything about Japan beyond anime. While watching the original language can make for an interesting viewing experience anime fans don't understand that dubs exist because not everyone can watch the show and read the subtitles at the same time. Further more most fans don't understand what good voice acting is so if they like voice the acting than that means it's perfect, same thing here they enjoy the original Japanese dub because they like the vibe of the Japanese language and therefore that makes them smarter in there eyes. Fetishizing Japan and disrespecting the amount of time and talent it takes to make an alternate language dub is awful
So real! Personally I like to watch dubbed first because English is my first language, but I like to go back and watch the sub to see the differences, I think it's pretty cool! Subbed anime also helps me a bit with learning Japanese as well since I can recognize words and phrases from my flashcards. Unfortunately I get grouped in with weeaboos a lot of the time because of this though. I hate the fetishization of anime, especially since it doesn't really come from a place of respect for Japan at all. 😓
@ Exactly, Weaboos and Otakus are the worst kinds of people when it comes to there real lack of respect for culture and there weird behavior towards children
I'm a big fan of watching and listening to media in their original form with as little dilution as possible. As someone whose first language isnt english or japanese, i prefer japanese cuz the mangaka is japanese. Feels like im watching a more authentic expression of the writer's work. Also this is a point ive never seen anyone make about one piece sub vs dub. There's SOO MANY English words, puns and names in one piece. The original voice work, has so many moments of English and japanese, whereas the dub has only english humor. This is a huge point against the dub watchers about how much of Oda's creativity you're actually missing. If it means you'll never watch the show, then watch it eng dubbed. but if you love the show, and care about the finer details watch it in Japanese.
@imgalxe It's the same story agreed. And if you're busy doing something else how would you read the subs Or pay attention to the finer details. You just don't. So eng dub is fine if you want a convenient way to consume the story. But objectively you're watching a more diluted version of the show, simple because of how many steps away from the manga you are. Anime is one step away, dub is 2 steps away. That's just a fact.
@@imgalxe Everyone should watch the show how they prefer to. I'm not saying sub over dub. But there's an undeniable fact that the more you translate the more you lose nuances in character or tone. Like sub watchers are also victim to this since we are reading translations of what's said in Japanese in English. I'm literally just talking about lost detail as the story travels different languages and mediums. Everyone should do exactly what they're comfortable with :D, I'm not talking about sub or dub supremacy. Just like you aren't either. It's just the objective reality of these things.
Hell yeah!! I love dubbed One Piece. Also, I saw a comment you made on the dubbed scene of Shanks talking about guns, defending dubbed anime. We need more dubbed appreciation.
I have caught up to the one piece dub, and the only times I have listened in sub were for the fan letter, and the new fishman island stuff. One Piece has one of my favorite eng dubs, right next to FMAB (I consider that to be the best eng dub for an anime period). I’ve also watched bad dubs for anime where it’s clear the performance was not directed clearly or people weren’t payed enough/ just didn’t care. Most dubs aren’t like that! Sorry for the rambling! This video showcases what I really love about eng dubs, so thank you for sharing!
Colleen is genuinely such a good voice actor for luffy, and i love Robin’s english voice is just so beautiful and fun fact i heard she’s a singer too, she sang ending 12 of one piece and it is just so beautiful
The dub is generally really solid but I CANT STAND luffys voice unfortunately 😔 i dont like when they add that mad rasp to anime protag voices but thats not a dub- exclusive issue, its just more present in the dub w this show
@@Rika24 I believe it, but regardless of who's choice it was it's hard to listen to for me 😩 Japanese luffy is just more believable and natural sounding imo
@@ijornhribrudkrvir if you’re talking about early Luffy that’s understandable, but here’s the thing by enies lobby her voice is way more refined like it’s a huge difference and we all have our own opinions, but I’m just throwing this out there:) and another arc where her voice finds its perfect rhythm is wano
Ya same, luffy in Japanese is easily able to go from comedic to emotional. The English dub is way too raspy so it sounds off when Luffy has to be emotional
Fun thing! Robin's VA apparently did it in one take! She nailed it the first time, looked at the director, who was just flabbergasted, and they both knew she got it.
The only defense I can logically understand is that the subtitles and dub don't always match, so certain things might be said by the english voice actors that strays away the original Japanese script. I will watch in english but I will also put on subtitles and you will see what the original voice actors were SUPPOSED to say.
One piece is pretty good in regards to what the actors are saying. Compare it to like, anything pre-2010 dragon ball where you literally cannot trust a single line spoken to be actually reflective of what is being said in Japanese (if even anything was said at all!)
personally, I’m glad the sub vs dub argument and debates are not as bad or reverent like they were a decade ago. I think people started to just shut up and let things be. 😂
It’s not that I hate the dub, it’s just that I started OP through subbed version, so I’m more used to it. So watching dub feels odd. However I’ve seen many other animes in dub and dubs are not bad as long as they don’t tamper with the OSTs and the storyline.
Thing is, dubbed voice acters (generally) just don't perform as well and are sometimes just downright goofy. One piece dub is legendary. It's just more rare to have good dub voice actors. I say gross to watching dub just for the memes, but sometimes the Dubbed is much better than the Subbed.
0:30 yeah,I watch dubbed anime to,I grew up with dubs in the 90's,actually we all did so I never understood why people complain about dubs,if your a 90's child you know dubs is all we had,if your from a newer generation and watch subtitles only,uh yeah dubs is all we had XD I tried subbed titled anime and I could not follow along,I'm terrible at multitasking so I can't watch and read at the sametime so I do prefer english dubs over subtitles unless the anime I want to watch is subtitled only then that is the only acceptation I'll make,it does piss me off that case closed (detective conan) doesn't get the same treatment as one peice, they're making english dubs for one piece and letting us catch up,so why can't case closed? (detective conan) I would love to see it get more dubs,I want to watch it again,I haven't gotten to watch it in years cause like I said I can't watch and read at the same time,I tried catching up to the anime with subtitles I was more lost than catching up
The only good argument as to why sub is better is that the translations can be more accurate. Dubs have the task of translating the dialogue and matching the syllable count so that the mouth movements are synced. So you could say sub or English manga would be a more accurate way to experience the series exactly as the creator intended. And definitely a few times in like, Romance Dawn I heard very clunky dialogue. But I overall really like the dub for One Piece, the voices are mostly good (only complaint is Eric Vale doing the world's most hammed up voice when Sanji sees a woman) and it's easier to watch the show when I don't have to read subtitles at the bottom of the screen. I hate movies with subtitles because I always read them instead of looking at the action
@@imgalxealthough now that I'm watching further into the video, sometimes dub translations add better things. Since "I will never lose again" fit the syllable count for just "lose again" in Japanese, the Funimation dub added extra lines that I think enhance the scene and add more depth to it
Me personally i watch subbed anime because i dont care for Dubs that do things like change scripts to the point to where it ends up removing the meaning from certain scenes and turning it into something else other than what the original intention is. Or when jokes dont really translate well so they change it to try and make it translate well, only for the joke to just not make sense. Or even worse to me, when people starting putting cringy memes and lame jokes into a dub.
But the subtitles do the same damn thing, only worse. The subtitles are often incorrect, the jokes aren’t funny anymore when you have to explain the joke, and the “cringy memes” are in the sub too. At least the dubbing fixes the dialog so it doesn’t seem like it’s written by an AI. Plus, it adds new jokes to replace the original hard-to-grasp ones.
@@GiovanniNero I agree. I’ve yet to watch a subtitled anime with a regular fluent conversation. It’s typed like an AI made the script. At least the dub makes it sound like a real conversation between 2 characters. If I wanted to watch subbed anime then I would have just asked chat gpt to write me a bedtime story.
One Piece sub-watcher here! I actually watch nearly all anime subtitled, because I want to learn to speak Japanese, and I don’t mind reading subtitles. I can see how it'd be difficult if you want to do something else while watching, though! I'll be honest, Luffy's English voice is a huge turn-off, but Zorro, Robin, and Law sound spot-on from the clips you chose. Nothing against dub, I just like listening to Japanese 😊
I only hate the One Piece dub because of 2 big reasons that follow us through the show: Chopper, and to a slightly lesser extent Luffy. They grate on my ears like cheese graters. Otherwise, it's completely fine dub. I also only watch very few dubs, but when they hit they hit HARD. Bleach, DBZ, Yu Yu, and Trigun are the only dubs I've seen so far that I can enjoy. In fact, I've ONLY seen Yu Yu in dub.
Honestly I dislike the dub vs sub debate in general. I personally really don’t like the Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure dub but I’m not going to gate keep people from watching it. I personally believe Sub is a much better experience for Jojo in terms of acting and don’t really feel like a lot of the English voices fit but if someone still enjoys the show despite that I am fine with it. I think people can get worked up on believing that the dub voices are so bad that it actually ruins the experience. My suggestion would be if you don’t like the dub voices try watching it in subbed. If you still don’t like it well maybe the show isn’t for you. We don’t all like or dislike the same things. Sure I wish some dubs were better, but not everyone is going to be turned off by certain dubs, and I recognize this despite personally being turned off by Jojo’s dub. Some people are fine with that dub and I’m ok with that. I don’t assume people will hate the show just because they watched the dub and if they liked it so far despite watching what you consider to be a bad dub why criticize them for it? They liked the show despite that dub’s flaws. My guess is that people are afraid new comers will dislike the show because of a what they consider a bad dub and they’re are legitimately some really bad dubs out there although I’ve only heard of them and I haven’t really judged myself and of course it’s a matter of opinion generally. However; If the dub is overwhelmingly hated even by newcomers in that case yeah the sub probably should be given as the only way you should watch the show. However that would be an exception. The issue is that it seems they treat sub like it’s the rule
I always think when it comes to Anime, Watching something in Dub is fine as long as you don't think Dub is superior. Sub is better, yeah. But that doesn't mean Dub enjoyers shouldn't watch Dub. I always do Sub no matter what media i consume, If i want to see a norwegian film i watch it in it's original language, no matter what it may be. If a Movie is originally voiced in Spanish it's spanish then. If English, then English.
After having watched all that is available of the dub on Crunchyroll, my Dad and I have been enduring the Japanese. I have more issue with reading the subtitles but my Dad and I agree that we think the English dub is more fitting. We've just gotten so used to the VAs that anything else, especially the Japanese we don't speak, sounds terrible. It's funny how, when you don't know the language, the noises made speaking it just sticks out so much more without that underlying meaning.
I swear it clicked in my brain when I saw someone say that it's not usually the voice acting that's bad, it's the dialogue, and that sub glazers just laser focus in on the voice acting because that's easier to pick apart. I reckon most dub haters are essentially like this.
I’ve grown up watching Naruto, Fairytail, glitter force and many other animes in dub so I primarily watch other stuff in dub but I did watch a couple of sub anime’s because some shows didn’t offer dub but I will always prefer dubbed anime because it’s just what I am used to.
omg thank youuu. i genuinely do not care what way ppl chose to watch anime it is so inconsequencal. like it was a meme for a long time to hate dubs and make fun of people who watch them for some reason. as i mature i just find myself needing to multitask and its so much easier to just throw on a dub and also be able to knock out a few things i need to get done. also people who arent native japanese speakers have no way of even knowing whether or not the japanese voice acting is actually good let alone better so its all just very pretentious. furthermore i just feel a better connection to the dub voices of the characters, and they often do their own spins of the certain jokes and lines that just land better to an english audience.
im a dub connoisseur, one piece's dub feels perfect for every last character in the show and honestly feels better than sub at alot of points. it is the best dub ive seen with an abserd amount of emotion
Ngl I have a soft spot for one piece dub bc of nostalgia. One reason why I usually prefer sub is because I’m not familiar with how Japanese normally speak like, so the cringe-factor is reduced. Because when you’re an English speaker, the quirkiness of anime is so apparent with English dub that it breaks the immersion. I don’t experience this with childhood animes though. If anything the sub sounds so weird to me (OG Naruto, Pokémon, Rurouni Kenshin, OHSHC, etc.). Then maybe it’s just about familiarity 🤔
I'm a sub watcher but that's because I have an audio processing disorder and it's just easier for me, I already watch literally everything with subtitles lmao but I literally could not care less how other people watch lol
I watched dub up until wano when I switched to sub, the voice acting in sub felt a lot more emotional for me at least but I can get why someone might not be able to read the subs while paying attention to the visuals. I started watching subbed anime a while before I switched to sub on one piece and by the time I switched my brain started automatically reading the subs so it never bothered me while watching one piece although it was a lil hard when I first started.
A fellow dub enjoyer hell yea! I watch sub for episodes that arent out but if the dub version is out. tho if I'm reading sub I tend to just read the manga
I've been watching One piece dubbed and I'm on dressrosa rn. My vietnamese friend was like "do you watch in dub or sub?" I said "dubbed" and he said >:O "bro..."
Robin's japanese voice is one of the few that I prefer over the dub voice, but that particular scene I prefer in dub over sub because I dont speak japanese, I don't really feel the same emotion from reading as I do hearing the words from her mouth
I watched one piece with sub because I wasn't able to find a dub version, but now that I'm watching other animes like bleach, I just watch it on dub and turn to sub when they're is an important or iconic moment on the show (I will really like if some bleach sub and dub watchers will tell me if it's worth it to watch it with sub, cause it's mach easier for me to concentrate on the show when I understand the language) but I don't see a problem with watching dub one piece, the actors are really great and make for some super emotional moments, but the voices in one piece are so iconic that it just feels a little of to watch it in dub
Im a brazilian that watches mainly subs but Im watching the brazilian dubbed One piece and it is Gold too. they really put their hearts on this one because a lot of the voice actors are fans now. its such an amazing show...
I'm a sub watcher, I saw the Robin scene months before I caught up to it. I saw it in the dubbed version. I was a bit disappointed when i finally caught up to it in the water 7 arc. When it concluded and they sent the Going Merry on her merry way, I had to search YT for the same scene on dubbed. It just goes so hard... Goddamn
Anime fans: You’re not a true anime fan unless you watch it all in Japanese. Japan: Yeah we don’t care about that, we want everyone to license their own voices in each country. 🌚🌚🌚
for me personally the reason I don't like the one piece dub is because i think that all the japanese voice actors are all so perfect that the english ones can't compare. Especially with franky, the voice made a large part of the character. I hope you end up finishing one piece!
I remember the dubs from the 90's well barely these days,I didn't get to see much of one piece for very long since the entire kids WB dropped for 0 reason, but I remember it being a complete mess the way 4kids banned a huge chunk of the anime made me go WTF was wrong with them? I didn't e=ven know those episodes were banned at that time, cause I was a kid,had school, thought I missed a few episodes cause I thought we forgot to record them and years later, like 20 years later I find out nope, those episodes were banned and it pissed me off alot to know I didn't miss those by accident, they did it on purpose ;-; but I do barely remember the orginal english dubs for one piece, now it feels weird to hear them after getting used to the funimation dubs
For a video about dubbing, your voice sounds great, it’s a good voice. I like it. Don’t feel bad about it, GalXE (which I only just now realized sounds like “Galaxy”, but forgive us, it does read as “Gal XE”) I trust you when you clarify you’re a guy.
I'm a voice actor in my own native language and get enough hate about dubbing anime which isn't dubbed here. The difference is that the haters praise both the English dub and the Japanese dub as they require you to know a second language and read so watching in our own language is somewhat considered only for kids...Still I'd say my dubs are very good and elevate what my first language can produce by a very wide margin
I’ll plant my flag and say Robin’s “Take me with you / I want to live” and Nami’s “ Luffy …help.” Hit harder in the dub. Not saying the overall performance or actors are better but compare those moments and the Dub actors are on another level with their performances
I do honestly prefer sub as it’s what I watched when I was a tiny little gremlin but if someone prefers dub it doesn’t really change the fact we are watching the same show. some dub scenes are generally really good.
omg someone actually put it into words! like, i get it if someone was hating on the dub because they only saw the 4kid dub, fair enough, ts is trash, but the current dubbers are so good! fucking corazone, he is truly one of the characters in the series and i love it! plus, im not sure how joke-filled/how well its done in the og, but i love brooks moments he is so funny and someone made a whole compellation filled with brook funny moments, iirc, it is pretty spoiler heavy, but i think that there was a disclaimer tho, not sure tho lol! edit: nope, no disclaimer the funi brook vid i am talking about: th-cam.com/video/crf4SNZ_kl8/w-d-xo.html
I much prefer watching in sub but as you correctly said, it’s just a preference. I struggle understanding a lot of words said verbally to me, and it’s much easier for me to understand when it’s written out for me, just like how you prefer watching in dub because it’s your native language and much easier to understand that way. That’s so fine! At the end of the day, it’s just a show and we should all enjoy it in whatever way we want to. There are definitely some One Piece dub moments that I love, even some more than the sub. Dub isn’t inherently bad just because it’s the original; it’s just another way to enjoy art. Also those Death Note clips are iconic, a great example of dubs being so amazing. And Ian Sinclair is an anime treasure, easily one of my favourite English dub VAs of all time! EDIT: I’m sure there was this interview or con panel Robin’s VA did, and she said she did her “I want to live” moment in ONE TAKE! That was it! I need to try and find it again
If you want a controversial Dub opinion? I think the 4kids Dub of One Piece made some good voice decisions here and there. I HATE how Human Point Chopper lost his gruffness and retains his cutesy voice. That was awesome and fit his character's story so well, but Funimation didn't keep that change
1:55 the sub has more accurate translation doesn’t fumble subtext and many other nuances that languages other than the original can’t convey especially if you’ve been indulging in the culture you start to pick up things you can’t even notice in the dubs.
It depends on the series, while I like Pokémon and dragon ball for their voice acting in the English dub, they also change or leave out so many important details, like how attacks work, reasons for certain plot elements and it gives the community misinformation. Especially with dragonball, for instance, Goku’s instant transmission (teleportation) were dub watchers think he can just teleport anywhere or he has to think of a picture of the character, which is completely wrong. The way it works is that Goku needs to sense or lock on to someone’s ki and then teleport which takes a few seconds for him to do. Then there’s people that are like “well why didn’t Goku teleport king Kai off his planet when he brought Cell there?” Goku legitimately had zero time to do anything, 2 seconds at the most, and in the manga Cell explodes the second they get to king Kai’s.
Honestly, i watch dub for literally the same reasons. I watch animes with dubs even if they're "bad" because i can easily connect to the story, i watch animes with subs whenever i'm rewatching it to give it a try or that anime has no dub and people are begging me to watch that anime. One thing i've experienced with subs is that i forgot about the characters completely, since i'm busy reading the sub titles i have no idea who's referring to who (In Bleach for ex. I forgot who Komamura was because of the fact that they use surnames first and i mixed him up with Tosen entirely) "JUST PAY ATTENTION TO SUB TITLES" i'm exactly doing that and yeah, i forgot what they were doing in the first place because i was busy reading what they were yapping about. Another funny thing i saw was that, sub watchers are usually the types of people forgetting about a character entirely because they can't remember what they exactly did in the story. I'm there to watch the story, not to read it. You can't do both at the same time, otherwise you're gonna miss out a lot.
When people talk about a bad dub, they don’t pacifically go into detail. What if the voices are awesome but the script is bad? What if the main character voices are good but side characters are not as good? Is it because they make different changes to specific sound effects when doing their own version? I’m aware of Yu-Gi-Oh GX has a very bad dub and it’s considered a bridged by fans, but the reason why I like that dub is because I like the voices for Zane and Aster Phoenix. I’m aware the script is terrible but I love the voices they chose for these characters, so I continued to watch it in dub. 😇
Watching the entirety of the sub, as well as the dub and reading the manga through several times is the best way, really the only way for one piece. *Also* for completely isolating yourself from friends & family and getting rid of those pesky relationships.
yeah i agree, the dub is really terrible in english. jokes aside, the reason people say this, is because they compare the quality of voice acting to the other available options. the fact that the eng dub sucks is widely known. doesn't mean you can't enjoy it though. watch the damn thing however you want lol !
@mybodyisamachine exactly my point. i was also talking about one pieces eng Dub. i have seen it in japanese, german and english and i cannot stand the latter. I think literally anything from 4kids is pretty terrible.
To me it’s sometimes of what I start first. The first dub I started was mha ( technically Pokémon, but I mean actively watching anime) and it sounded just fine, but then when new seasons came out the dub wasn’t there so I had to watch the sub, and while it took me a little bit to be able to keep up with the subtitles and what’s on screen, I got used to it. But I know some people have trouble no matter what trying to do both. But now I can read the subs while also being able to comprehend everything on screen at the same time.
I still can’t believe people got mad about it lmao of all my videos this is the one that I figured no one would be mad at
Yeah obviously I never said dub was perfect and amazing and flawless, there are tons of dub voices that I don’t like.

@Gatorgoboom he puts so much love and energy into that roll it makes brooks character even more lovable
People forget the 4kids dub wasn’t just when they fucked up one piece they did a good job on other shows like Yugioh too
Like somethings will not translate well in other languages. Some jokes needs adaptations for example.
I don't like the newer Pokémon dubs not because the voice acting is bad, but because the music is different and it's usually way worse
Instant sub. This is beautiful. As a dub only watcher im so glad to see others agree with me. Biggest example is the robin "i want to live" scene. Felt NOTHING during the japanese dub. English dub literally made me cry. And im man enough to admit it.

Finally, a rational sub enjoyer that doesn't attack people who disagree with him
I switch between sub and dub depending on the series.
They should have just got someone who’s could’ve used a voice they were better with.”
To those people I say: Toei and Oda listened to clips and chose the cast, English speaking or not, it was their decision.
Last thing people never seem to mention is that Luffy’s English voice improves a lot over time, by enies lobby, his voice is much more refined and consistent.

He voices two completely separate characters in db and makes them sound VASTLY different. Chris sabat is an amazing va.

@@Randomfliper ain’t no way bro😭😭 it’s the same fucking story no one cares
@imgalxe It's the same story agreed. And if you're busy doing something else how would you read the subs Or pay attention to the finer details. You just don't. So eng dub is fine if you want a convenient way to consume the story. But objectively you're watching a more diluted version of the show, simple because of how many steps away from the manga you are. Anime is one step away, dub is 2 steps away. That's just a fact.
@@Randomfliper you sound ridiculous literally no one cares about some stupid puns. Sub watchers aren’t above sub watchers
@@imgalxe Everyone should watch the show how they prefer to. I'm not saying sub over dub. But there's an undeniable fact that the more you translate the more you lose nuances in character or tone. I'm literally just talking about lost detail as the story travels different languages and mediums. Everyone should do exactly what they're comfortable with :D, I'm not talking about sub or dub supremacy. Just like you aren't either. It's just the objective reality of these things.

Ya same, luffy in Japanese is easily able to go from comedic to emotional. The English dub is way too raspy so it sounds off when Luffy has to be emotional
The only reasonable argument against dubs is localisation. The subtitles can be iffy too, but not as bad as some dubbing.
The subtitles are often less accurate than the dubbing. They pump those subs out wayyy too quick and they often do a crappy job too.
Fun thing! Robin's VA apparently did it in one take! She nailed it the first time, looked at the director, who was just flabbergasted, and they both knew she got it.
death note dub was epic
Real as fuck
The only defense I can logically understand is that the subtitles and dub don't always match, so certain things might be said by the english voice actors that strays away the original Japanese script. I will watch in english but I will also put on subtitles and you will see what the original voice actors were SUPPOSED to say.
One piece is pretty good in regards to what the actors are saying. Compare it to like, anything pre-2010 dragon ball where you literally cannot trust a single line spoken to be actually reflective of what is being said in Japanese (if even anything was said at all!)
Must subs add unnecessary dialogue that wasn’t actually said.
personally, I’m glad the sub vs dub argument and debates are not as bad or reverent like they were a decade ago.
I think people started to just shut up and let things be. 😂
It’s not that I hate the dub, it’s just that I started OP through subbed version, so I’m more used to it. So watching dub feels odd. However I’ve seen many other animes in dub and dubs are not bad as long as they don’t tamper with the OSTs and the storyline.
tldr: "I haven't watched One Piece, but these dubs are kinda fire"
Totally fair imo
@@redtailarts101 THIS!!

@expertarcher8542 I have yet to watch an anime subbed that dose the same thing dubbed anime dose.

@@GiovanniNero I agree. I’ve yet to watch a subtitled anime with a regular fluent conversation. It’s typed like an AI made the script.

It's very much a me thing , srry if you disagree just my opinion
I'm a simple gal, when I can pay full attention I watch sub, when I have to multitask I listen to the dub
omg thank youuu. i genuinely do not care what way ppl chose to watch anime it is so inconsequencal. like it was a meme for a long time to hate dubs and make fun of people who watch them for some reason. as i mature i just find myself needing to multitask and its so much easier to just throw on a dub and also be able to knock out a few things i need to get done. also people who arent native japanese speakers have no way of even knowing whether or not the japanese voice acting is actually good let alone better so its all just very pretentious. furthermore i just feel a better connection to the dub voices of the characters, and they often do their own spins of the certain jokes and lines that just land better to an english audience.
im a dub connoisseur, one piece's dub feels perfect for every last character in the show and honestly feels better than sub at alot of points. it is the best dub ive seen with an abserd amount of emotion
I love that you used the square aspect ratio it makes me feel safe
American cartoons and comics may have become more popular than animanga but one piece will always have a place in my heart❤
YES I KNEW DUB JOTARO VOICES LAW BRO VOICES 2 PEAK ANIMES
I'm a sub watcher, I saw the Robin scene months before I caught up to it. I saw it in the dubbed version. I was a bit disappointed when i finally caught up to it in the water 7 arc. When it concluded and they sent the Going Merry on her merry way, I had to search YT for the same scene on dubbed. It just goes so hard... Goddamn
Anime fans: You’re not a true anime fan unless you watch it all in Japanese.
Japan: Yeah we don’t care about that, we want everyone to license their own voices in each country. 🌚🌚🌚
Japan: We’re literally trying to give it to you so you can watch it in YOUR language.
0:42 JOKES ON YOU, I never watched the anime and only read the manga
The dub is actually fire but Luffy’s voice be annoying me so BAD sometimes 💀
for me personally the reason I don't like the one piece dub is because i think that all the japanese voice actors are all so perfect that the english ones can't compare.
That comment of "if I want to read the words, why not read the manga" is EXACTLY what I've been saying for years!
The only reason why I watch dub it's because I hate reading while watching a show
Okay if you haven't seen brook, how in the entire world is Law one of your favorites.
I said it in the video I researched his character
Dub with subs is how i do it
For a video about dubbing, your voice sounds great, it’s a good voice. I like it. Don’t feel bad about it, GalXE (which I only just now realized sounds like “Galaxy”, but forgive us, it does read as “Gal XE”)
I trust you when you clarify you’re a guy.
I watch sub one piece because I think the character's voice sounds better. To those who watch dub, enjoy yourselves. 👍
Hey I was gonna make this video! XD. I'm glad you share the same opinion
I’ll plant my flag and say Robin’s “Take me with you / I want to live”
and Nami’s “ Luffy …help.”
Hit harder in the dub.
@@MaskedFlewer holy fucking shit a mature sub watcher
@@imgalxe You made me cry, First Cora than Robin you're a cruel person.
@@MaskedFlewer I cried too😭😭
I crode. You crode. We both crode.
omg someone actually put it into words! like, i get it if someone was hating on the dub because they only saw the 4kid dub, fair enough, ts is trash, but the current dubbers are so good!
fucking corazone, he is truly one of the characters in the series and i love it! plus, im not sure how joke-filled/how well its done in the og, but i love brooks moments he is so funny and someone made a whole compellation filled with brook funny moments, iirc, it is pretty spoiler heavy, but i think that there was a disclaimer tho, not sure tho lol!
edit: nope, no disclaimer
the funi brook vid i am talking about: th-cam.com/video/crf4SNZ_kl8/w-d-xo.html
From what you've said i can't tell how far you are in one piece
Colleen’s ultimate laugh is one of her best moments. She goes all out.
Extra: I think what makes people love subs is that the depiction of the character through voice and this goes the same for the dub as well.
The corazon portion in the dub and sub destroyed me
When people talk about a bad dub, they don’t pacifically go into detail.
I’m aware the script is terrible but I love the voices they chose for these characters,
so I continued to watch it in dub.
It doesn't always suck. Sometimes it can be fine. What is usually true is that the sub is better compared to the dub.
Damn, I forgot how good Zoro soloing Whiskey Peak looks 😂 way to open with that
@@herecomemacOnTT Real
They also have some incredible VO artists for the dub. Matt Mercer for Law stfu it's awesome
