We need many Leo castelli,we artists are not good at selling our own works,it's like selling our son's and daughters for us.

I love watching these older tv interviews with the big names like this. It gives a lot of insight into the historical context of the art world

makes me happy to know Leo was a good guy. what makes me feel miserable? how Johns & co are overly considered by an audience who take critics and art dealers words more seriously than what they are actually looking at, a person's daily make! which no matter how grand or successful or innovative is as a piece, is also an act that counts for something as it is the energy/output of person you are drawn to. This feeling of yes when we find other people and their make is more valuable than all the money made by all the auction houses that exist. We are so lucky to find each other! Finding work you like is more wonderful and seems to have more value to me than so many other interactions with people. And that sense of discovery and interest in what other people make IS something to abide in! sad lot for those who are threatened by other people's more impressive output. As long as the good thing gets made and there are good eyes to see it don't worry to be the one who makes it. I think people's greatest artistic moment are when they feel least obligated to other people. anyways, i digress. Leo Castelli was interested in everyone he dealt with (artists wise, maybe not dealer wise). What made it more thrilling for him was being there. Most of the pomp and ceremony of art is a desperate attempt to own the moment of impressing other people, also it is an attempt to own a good night, for ever. Leo was in a room with the thing and he liked the thing and he invested in it. And i imagine the satisfaction he got from that was more important to him than being listened to by the media. the overwhelming amount of layer cake that has taken place since Castelli breathed his last makes me feel giddy. i don't want Logan's Run style galleries where the art burns up into the atmosphere when it turns 30 years old but i do wish so much of what is the art world would go away.

From what I could tell, the opening announcer was Jerry Miller who, as of 1978, anchored WNYC-TV's "News of New York," and handled the sign-ons and -offs for the station.
