I’d like to wish a posthumous Happy Birthday to the great George Harrison who was born on this date in 1943.
While this may not be considered a real “George Harrison” song, I just happened to have recorded it the other day - Penny Lane, which was first released by The Beatles as a single in 1967 and again, later the same year, on the Magical Mystery Tour album.
I was never a big Beatles fan but certainly acknowledge their enormous contribution to the world of music as well as Paul McCartney’s contribution to the world of bass. I enjoyed learning this one. Paul McCartney used, what I felt were, some interesting note choices and rhythmic phrasings. I like learning bass lines that cause me to say to myself, “Well, that’s not what I would have done at all.” Or, “I wonder how he came up with that?”
As our vacation draws to a close, we’re off for a light meal and a Blue Oyster Cult show.

In all of the accomplishments and accolades Paul gets as a musician/songwriter, it seems that his bass playing easily gets overlooked. This song is a testament of his brilliance as a bassist.

kmonkey74 --Simple melodies and simple bass lines. Simple, yet brilliant. Whether it be a vocal or bass line (or piano or guitar composition), no one would ever think of it. Over and over and over, in song after song, he consistently created clever parts no one else would ever think of. That is his genius.

This was the first Beatles song I saw Paul McCartney played live in person. It was at the soundcheck for a concert on his Out There tour. It was a magical night.

If you listen carefully to Paul's bass lines, you can hear his brilliance. He never, ever repeats the same riff twice.
His knowledge and use of the fretboard is second to none.

It helps me to appreciate, even more, what the Beatles managed to achieved (they didn't just pop up out of nowhere). Anyway, thanks for this. I have to tell you TJH, your videos have been the best thing I've found on TH-cam. Great sound (those basses are beautiful!) and great right and left hand technique, and most importantly, great video work. I can see and hear everything, even the tough passages, which makes it easier to follow and learn from, even from a seasoned bassist as myself. Most of the stuff I'm into (McCartney, Bruce Thomas, etc) are spot on with you. Most of what I search for I find on your page. And, being a horror movie fan, the background with your friends staring at me are always cool to look back at as I'm playing. Bravo, man! Keep on keepin' on!

In my opinion, you are one of the best on TH-cam and make a great contribution by sharing with us your covers. I learn a lot from you. I always try to follow your fingering in order to figure out the tabs. It's rather intriguing sometimes 😉.

I'm very glad to hear that you've chosen bass and that you find some value in my videos.
To be honest, I've been extraordinarily fortunate with the amount of positive response I've gotten over the years. Once in a great while something negative will pop up and I really don't take it personally at all.
I've said this before, while I've always been sympathetic and supportive of all sorts of bass players, I have a soft spot for female bass players, especially beginners. It's just that I think the bass is such a supportive and thankless instrument and, in general, women deserve better than that. My experience was that it took more than a little bit of time and effort to become moderately proficient on an instrument that is the stringed equivalent of a tuba. I really shouldn't be projecting my own biases on to you and, with that being said, I hope you derive as much satisfaction out of playing the bass as I have/do. And if there is anything I might be able to help you with, please feel free to ask.

Here's to George...a loss we can't appreciate, for his songs were creatively superb. Going out after Travelling Wilburys or any of the songs he was writing cannot be known, and for that I am sad. He had a great spiritual energy and peace that will be with him always. His Beatles song were A-plus...All things must pass, was #1, and went 6 X platinum, the most successful post Beatles work. Ravi Shankar collaboration, as Hari Georgeson, adds to a body of work that is expansive. In 1987, he again hit commercial success...doing Cloud Nine, Travelling Wilburys...but was soon given cancer news. The expired Apple contract in 1974 let his Dark Horse label take over, and I hope he made serious money, which I'm sure he did...an old Mansion/estate in England, the one a nut climbed into and seriously hurt George and his wife. Amazing man, thanks for your gift to us all...I am in your debt, for your songs gave me a mental uplift I needed at the time...Travelling Wilbury's especially...on my Sony Walkman for a long subway ride in Toronto. Incredible.

To anyone who disses Paul McCartney, think of how many singing bassmen sing lead, play basslines this complex and original to songs they have written themselves, and have careers that span 60 years and counting. I will listen if anyone can come up with someone with a more impressive musical life. I see him any time I can. He's a phenomenon.

Excellent job, Troy! Some great melodic stuff there. I've read that with the later songs, Paul would wait to record his lines until the song was almost finished. That way, he could noodle and come up with more melodic ideas. The earlier songs were recorded with the whole band at once, much more of him just playing root-fifth ideas.

I usually use Songsterr bass tabs, but this version of Penny Lane and Anthony Giorgio's version play the choruses quite differently from the Songsterr tab.
Excellent. I always loved the bass line of this song. I also love the way you quite often play 'a' last note. Reminds me of rehearsing; when someone would play a last note or chord, and I'd play a drum and cymbal stop; then they'd play another 'final' note etc., and this would continue. Haha. Brought a smile to my face just remembering.
