Mahilamukha Jataka (#26)
In the Buddha’s time, there was a monk who acted improperly. When questioned, he said that it was not his fault; his friend made him do it. In order to teach a lesson, the Buddha related a story from the past.
A long time ago, there was a highly prized, well-behaved elephant. One day, he became wild and dangerous. The king sent a wise man to figure out the cause. It turned out that some bandits had been having discussions near the elephant's stable. After hearing the words of the bandits, the elephant’s behavior changed, and he became violent. In this video, see what the wise man advises the king on how to restore the elephant’s behavior.
Wat San Fran is proud to present stories taken from the Jatakas, Dhammapada, and Buddhist history. These stories often use past rebirth stories (Jatakas) to reveal the connection between past and present, and illustrate the relationship between cause and effect.

We can imagine on what kind of instructions, examples and environment that criminals must have been up through. And how good instructions, good examples and good environment can help them to overcome the type of mindset they may have.
A criminal can become a saint if they meet a good person ! Angulimala was a criminal before he met buddha. Bad company corrupt one minds
The good
This reminds me of a saying; “Lay down with dogs, wake up with fleas.”
