    Hand signs are used to mold chakra to perform most jutsu. Having both hands mean that you have that much more control over your chakra. When Minato used one hand for hand signs in the war arc, he had to completely stop moving and focus on his chakra control. He couldn’t really do this at any other point in his life because he wouldn’t have had time to stop and focus.

    Look at the SPEED difference. That’s the handicap. Kakashi is known as having some of the fastest hand seals in the series. Look at how long those 1 handed jutsu take to cast. And they also seem like they have to stay still and focus more on producing both halves of their chakra. Similar to sage mode not allowing for movement while gathering

    I always figured that Haku's one handed jutsus were part of his Kekkei Genkai; and that is even more evident in time when we learn about the elements of chakra. That people are born with elements, maybe more than one, and the mixing of them is what creates secondary elements. In that sense, the one handed jutsu makes more sense as a Kekkei Genkai than Ice Style does. (Maybe even a mix of both. The Uchiha have the Sharingan but Lightning and Fire Styles also seem to be a norm for them).
    The thing is that at one point hand signs kinda become like magic words in Harry Potter. Yeah it's "needed" for people with low power, but it seems most powerful jutsus or ninjas don't even require handsigns. Shadow Clones have their own, Chidori is used frequently without any. Akimichi's Baika jutsus don't usually have signs. The Rasengan doesn't need signs.
    If so many don't need signs, I think there's a point to be made that high level ninjas don't even need them because they're already that good at chakra manipulation

    • @ThermiteKitty
      @ThermiteKitty ปีที่แล้ว +30

      The Rasengan is the clearest example of how hand signs are useful. It's the ultimate expression of chakra-shaping, so while Minato didn't design it with any hand signs because his chakra-shaping was perfect and he could just make a Rasengan in an instant, Naruto initially needed a clone to focus entirely on manually shaping the chakra, doing with two hands for an extended period what traditional hand signs do in a few movements.

    • @jpcsdutra
      @jpcsdutra ปีที่แล้ว +15

      @@ThermiteKitty It kinda proves my point though. What are the ninjas we have seen use the Rasengan? Minato, Jiraya, Kakashi, Naruto and Konohamaru. Out of these, Konohamaru is the weakest one by far and even then he is kind of a genius with Hokage ancestry.
      None of them even need to bother with handsigns for the most part and are absolute chakra monsters. If someone would to "perfect it" and make it attainable with handsigns that fix how much chakra it spends... would that many more people actually use it? It's a pure ball made of elementless chakra. It's the kind of control thing that already takes someone of at least chuunin level to even think of doing.
      I think this does highlight a huge problem though: Most ninja in Naruto only use signature jutsus of their clans and teachers. Tobirama, Orochimaru and Kabuto might be the exceptions of being out there creating things, but most ninja don't really use generic jutsus they've learned at school or from another ninja, do they?

    I think it would have made sense for characters like Madara, Sasuke, Hiruzen, Kakashi, Itachi, Minato (to a greater extent) and maybe even Sakura, Tobirama and Orochimaru, to be capable of using one-handed signs to cast jutsu. It could be a marker of *extreme* talent, intelligence, experience, chakra control, etc. And you could even have a tactical advantage over people who are even stronger than you are.
    It's almost like when Itachi put Naruto under genjutsu with one finger and no eye contact. You can seriously catch someone off-guard and hit them with a jutsu they can't identify ahead of time, because they didn't see your hand signs. You could catch them in a mix-up, surprise them and make it impossible to determine your next move as Kakashi said he's "never seen that before." And then you can use your other hand for something as well, like when Haku and Sasuke locked weapons. Maybe you could even cast two ninjutsu or genjutsu at once, or make it *look* like you can, or show a sign for a jutsu you have used, and a sign for another jutsu you used on the opponent before, or a new one-and they won't know which technique you're actually casting until it comes out. Unless they have dojutsu or some other keen sensory power, as Dygo said.
    But it's interesting what becomes possible with this. Another missed opportunity, eh?

    • @hudsondo9581
      @hudsondo9581 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I always saw hand signs as simply making the jutsu stronger. You can use a jutsu without any hand signs. Like the pointing Gen-Jutsu you mentioned. It was a fraction of the strength his normal gen-jutsu can do. One handed jutsus might be 50% the strength, but if you throw your opponent off guard, 50% is still good enough.
      We stop seeing it because "cheap tricks" become less and less useful. A ninja taking on Naruto with some cheap trick isn't gonna work. In a battle of low level ninja, it is a lot bigger advantage. It's why we also stop seeing substitute jutsu. It's really useful in low level fights, but when someone can blow up an entire squire mile it becomes a lot less useful.

    A lot of people pointed out that it probably takes twice the amount of time and focus to pull off a one handed hand sign. Additionally, there could be a chakra penalty. When Naruto was first using the clone technique, he was using twice the amount of chakra his counterparts used to create less clones of himself. One handed hand signs could function similarly. The castor would have to put extra chakra in order to perform the jutsu. Only those who have the talent, judgement, and chakra levels should attempt to weave one handed hand signs.

    One handed signs are more of a disability. Minato and Haku used them only when they were unable to have access to their other arm. It's easier to do two handed hand signs. The lore reason being that expressing chakra physically is more difficult with one hand. You need two hands. One hand is difficult and no hand signs is impossible.
    Chakra is expressed either spiritually or physically. Hands signs are used to pin point the exact physical chakra expression the user wants. Kaguya used zero hand signs because she only used her body's innate abilities. She fought like a child and exhausted huge amounts of chakra. Hand signs focus the user's chakra to express precisely a specifc chakra expression (jutsu).
    Think of it as Jinchuriki working with their Tailed Beast being stronger than the raw power of the Tailed Beast. The Jinchuriki is similar to hand signs, in that they focus the Tailed Beasts chakra into a more focused chakra output. Naruto in his Kurama Cloak Mode is stronger than base Kurama (even when assuming we do not factor in Naruto's own individual strength).

    There is one thing that you didn't mention. This might be my head canon but here goes.
    You are supposed to basically channel physical and mental energy into when using jutsu, so I would guess that you need 1 hand to focus 1 type of energy.
    When Minato used his one-handed hand sign he was standing still and basically concentrating doing nothing else. Haku was standing still both times and and Sasuke in most times I've seen him was also standing still doing one-handed jutsu.
    My head canon would be that concentrating both mental and physical energy with 1 hand would be like trying to gather Sage chakra while moving, which Naruto was trying to do but failed. But on a smaller scale. Which is why it wouldn't be common practice to use them, because they require more concentration and time and basically handicap you while using them. Which is why except for Haku we only see others using them in desperation (Having 1 hand). Haku was also trained to be an assassin, so preparing a one handed jutsu might have been easier for him then the rest due to his speed. Similar to how Sasuke now uses them regularly, because he uses them really fast, but he is again standing still while doing it.
    It's my own headcanon at least, and makes sense to me

      Agree. My thought was that we’re casting a seal with their bodies, a circle O. And each hand sign is a stamp on the seal and when you transcript all the stamp on this seal the mixture of spirit and physical combine and in this ritual and create the jutsu and I was thinking about yugioh the dark magician magic circle, seal of orichacho, ect. And doing this with one hand take more than skill you need to fully understand your spirit like and how to mold it to fill the rest of the seal.

      @@hoofhearted4 my guess it’s still a seal. I think about it like they use their hands to start the chant, ritual, seal or jutsu whatever you want to think about this magic system, but you still must finish it by clapping your hands together and finishing the circle because both obito and sasuke kicked their opponent away to perform the final hand sign and finish. You got all the molded chakra from using your opponent hand and in the end you put in your physical part by putting your hands together and releasing the jutsu. I don’t know if this make sense to you I try to worded something that made sense to me but never said it out loud.

This could in general boost Sakuras power because in canon she Is mostly a taijutsu and medical jutsus user, but giving her the ability to use powerfull 1 hand sign of a chakra nature not so protagonist of the anime (like earth and water) will both benefit her character and the nature trasformation chakra "lore"

Sasuke uses more than the necessary output because he isn't as good despite being stronger (and the whole gist was that Naruto was really bad at it)

    one handed hand signs feels like speechless casting in mushoku tensei. in MT it requires a good understanding of the spell, what it does, and a young mastery of magic to pull off. Rudy can't cast healing/detox spells as he does not understand fundamentally how the spells works while elemental spells are easy for him and he can cast them without incantations. This is also again the same universe where a jutsu that is just molding chakra into a fast spinning ball is considered an A ranked jutsu.

  • @snowboundwhale6860
    @snowboundwhale6860 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I'd assumed they were a part of Haku's kekkei genkai since nobody else used them until the end of shippuden, partially also because neither of the 2 sharingan users present even attempted to copy those movements, and also because Haku only used it for Ice style jutsu, which were his main kekkei genkai & which made it seem like maybe it _only_ worked with those jutsu. Tbf though we don't see Haku use much ninjutsu at all, let alone anything other than Ice style, so there's nothing conclusive there.
    But when they do come up later it does raise questions since it clearly separates the technique from being tied to a bloodline.
    Another commenter pointed out how the one handed handsigns are always used while standing, implying they take a lot of extra concentration and are thus less useful in an active fight, similar to building up sage chakra.
    I had a headcannon that the one handed handsigns needed to be done twice to make up for the lack of the other hand, but from looking at Sasuke in Boruto that seems to be have confirmed as not the case. The idea was that a jutsu might take 5 handsigns using both hands, but when performing with one hand the same jutsu would need 10, performing the series of 5 handsigns in order twice.
    E.g. Fireball is *Horse, Snake, Ram, Monkey, Boar, Horse, Tiger* ; With one hand it would've been *Horse, Snake, Ram, Monkey, Boar, Horse, Tiger, Horse, Snake, Ram, Monkey, Boar, Horse, Tiger* .
    It'd mean that you could perform jutsu while keeping a hand free/ occupied by something else, but it takes twice as long to cast, further emphasizing the importance of the user's skill at performing handsigns.

    One handed jutsu were used a lot more often. It is mostly mist ninja. Which makes sense, they are primary sword fighters so one hand will be filled. Hidden mist jutsu was just one hand.
    I always saw hand signs as simply making the jutsus stronger. It makes molding chakra easier. When they first walk on water they use a hand sign then never again. It's similar how they say Ninja's can only use one chakra nature. Every ninja can use every chakra nature, it just might be very weak. You can do a jutsu without any hand signs, but it would be a fraction of the strength if you did the hand signs while still taking up the same amount of chakra.

    I wanna see someone take full advantage of one handed handsigns to launch 2 different jutsu's with 2 different natures at the same time. Something that would take an immense amount of chakra control. Not too late to have Sakura be useful at that at least.... something.... come on maybe Sarada or Boruto could try learning it from Sasuke. We've seen plenty of combination jutsu's, but there is a lot more potential with that with one-handed hand signs. It's not even that it's more discreet you can potentially just combine 2 jutsu's without needing a partner, or prepare the first jutsu beforehand. Like with Minato and Flying Raijin with Rasengan. Technically a combination jutsu, but one jutsu was prepped before using the other.

    My theory is that one-handed handsigns are twice as slow to perform than the two-handed ones because you have half amount of the arms to perform them with. Having a leftover arm or the ability to hide your prepared jutsus from your opponent probably don't worth as much as being able to cast jutsus twice as faster. The one-handed handsigns are probably would be used by high-level fighters only, and at that level normal weapons (which you could utilize your leftover arm to use) don't do anything, but spamming op jutsus do. So using one-handed handsigns probably doesn't worth the effort nor the downsides it comes with.

So, Tsunade and Minato are the first ones that comes in my mind. But I imagine that the overall kage level shinobis focused on ninjutso would fit well with that. Could be more common among medical ninjas. So, among the trio in team 7 Sakura would be the fittest to learn it, since she showed great talent in that from the start, and eventually became at 17 one of the only 3 persons to obtain a byakugou seal.

    Hand signs aid the user in moulding chakra for the desired jutsu, so the better the person is at performing hand signs the less chakra is required for that jutsu, same goes for moulding chakra. If the user is better at moulding chakra sometimes hand signs aren’t needed for the respective jutsu. Chidori for example.
    So it make sense that one handed signs probably require more chakra and more time to finish the sequence making the cons out weigh the pros in some scenarios.

    It burns double the chakra a standard hand sign would require in a best case scenario and it's even harder to focus chakra with one hand than with two so most likely you would spend a lot of chakra for maybe having the enemy not recognize your jutsu (assuming they would have known otherwise) Also time spent practicing this is time not spent practicing anything else.
    So one handed jutsu are really not worth it if you don't have a very specific use for them, you are a hokage and are awesome in every other way already, or you literally can't use jutsu otherwise.

Can you even imagine using 2 jutsu simultaneously if you use each hand to cast a jutsu, this would allow unique jutsu combos or even new jutsu creation; especially in the case of elemental chakra natures. Combining 2 compatible chakra elemental natures (1 in each hand) would create new jutsu, empower a main jutsu or even be a way of rivaling bloodline jutsus where users combine 2 elementals nature's to Create a new jutsu nature or a new unique jutsu.

  • @parthavvari2384

    I have a in universe theory - one handed hand signs would probably have less control over your chakra and so therefore you have to put more focus into it. Also, 2 handed hand signs would probably less focus intensive and faster than one handed hand signs, and it would be much easier to control chakra into a certain point. My theory is that Minato knew one handed hand signs but never used it because it was much harder to control chakra and needed much more focus and concentration with less speed so it turned into a "I will use this only when I need to" type thing where whenever he doesn't have flying thunder god and he is in a situation where he has only one hand and has to perform a jutsu, like in the war arc, he would use it but 2 hands is just way faster and natural for a shinobi compared to one handed hand signs. As for Haku, he (Im pretty sure) only used one handed hand signs when his other hand was occupied in a weapon clash.

But it does seem strange that Kakashi never tried them, even after witnessing so many from Haku. You'd think he would sharingan that and keep it for later, unless Haku's abilities were tied to a blood-power that included his hand signs.

    I imagine it is a slower process, requiring better chakra control which is the purpose of hand signs. No one moves while they are doing it with one hand either. So it probably isn't done except as a last resort. It is also possible that some techniques might simply be undoable with one hand. The techniques used with one hand are usually unique to the moment.
    The real question is Sasuke's ability to use his opponent's hands to complete his hand signs.
