When I listen to him I think he was thinking in functions - guide tone lines and forward motion - where does he want to go with a certain line! I think it is important to study this and recognize it. I bet you will find it all over the place when it is totaly in your system have a great practice

In the second example I think Coltrane is thinking in G Phrygian, in is solo on Blue in Green is a couple of examples of that! Great Lesson , Cheers!
