Betfair trading myth | Why you don't need to know the direction of odds to profit

  • When I started Betfair trading I was doing arbitrage betting. I was going to a bookmaker or sportsbook and laying the opposing bet on Betfair.
    I would profit because of the differential between the amount I won on the winning bet and the amount I lost on the lay bet on Betfair.
    When trading you are trying to do the same thing, but you have many different ways in which you can do this.
    If you latch onto a decent trend you can ride that trend to get a good profit. But you need to get in and out at roughly the correct moment.
    But it is possible to trade without knowing the direction and also profit. So that's what I'm going to cover in this video.
    I suggest you also view this video: -

    Thanks Peter. I spent today looking to back steamers and a couple of races the price hardly moved for 5 minutes. I just sat there like a plum and now realise I could have scalped for 5 minutes. Can't wait to jump back on it tomorrow!

    I feel that you've vastly over simplified this and made it look much easier than it is. Your years of experience would have meant you had a good idea of which way the markets were going to go on these trades. Chuck a total newbie into this and ask them to click prices and I could see disaster waiting to happen.

      I have plenty of videos talking about all aspects of trading, but I have to generalise on individual videos.
      The key concept on this video was to demonstrate that you can profit without having to use a directional bias.

      If you watch all horse racing videos by bet angel at least 10 times each, including the psychology videos, spend 2-3 years of practicing seriously it’s very likely to become successful. At least this is what I did and it worked!
      Just to add, and fail at least one hundred times before you master your edges!

    I tried this because I'm very bad at working out which way the price is likely to move and it didn't go well. I placed a trade each side of the market just as in the video but nearly every time, either the back or the lay bet would get matched instantly but at the same time the price would then rocket off in the wrong direction leaving me with no chance of getting the other order filled and at a loss every time. I've still no idea what I did wrong.

    • @betangeltv
      @betangeltv  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The vast majority of times a trade like this will match. If not, you are possibly in the wrong market at the wrong time.
      But there is also another non-directional trade you can do here: -
      th-cam.com/video/i0tzkuqcwWQ/w-d-xo.html
      The key message here is that you don't need to guess direction to trade profitably.

    To be honest and as daft as this sounds I find forex pairs much easier to trade than pre horse races, Ive only one price to look at and then consider support and resistance points checking higher time frames, plus there are some excellent free indicators which there doesnt seem to be on horse racing software and markets , I think that was your background before betfair if I am correct?

      I tried, and failed, to trade financials short term. But used that knowledge to good use when trading in sports.
      I'm a much better trader all round now, but I'm consistent enough on sports to not have to think about short term stuff on financials.

    I've heard you say this several times and it's always baffled me. Regarding the steps you made from arbing then doing both backing and laying on the exchange. And that betfair trading was then born.... Surely the people who founded betfair and a lot of their first customers had that concept in mind from the very beginning?

    • @betangeltv
      @betangeltv  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, it was never designed to be used this way. The exchange was designed for people to offer back and lay bets.
      They hadn't really thought beyond that. I'd have to check but I think it was perhaps a decade before the ability to trade out and hedge positions become something that they offer on their site.
      The commission structure would have been different if they realised that people would trade. That eventually became a problem for them.

      Betfair reached out to traders very early on to find out more about how they were using the exchange. I remember it well.
      I was actually afraid I'd found a loophole that would be closed when I started. But of course, it became part of the ecosystem.

    1- when are you starting to do the betAngel course’s from where you are.
    2- if I was doing in-play trading on your software is there a button I can press so I can see the live racing on the same screen as I trade, or can you recommend a really small monitor I can buy to use with my laptop, can you recommend or give names of places where I can buy a small on please for my laptop, many thanks 😊

    • @betangeltv

      The main aim of this video was to show you that you didn't need to pick a direction on the second runner to make a profit.

  • @rstevens7711
    @rstevens7711 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Your comment of 'I netted £250 on this runner' at 5.00 isn't quite right is it? There will be some who watch this video who think that in 2 clicks you made £250 on the market, and you didn't did you? You should make that clear.
    Same at 0530, you say 'I earned £30', but you didn't do you? Again, you won't have left the market at that point. You would have hedged your profit across all runners producing a profit nothing like the £30 that some people would have thought you made by watching this video.
    Why did you do that?

    • @betangeltv
      @betangeltv  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm always curious why people don't interpret this the way I intend. A trade is opening and closing a position to complete a trade. The hedging element is separate, you see that in the final part of this video.
      To not confuse people and to directly contrast both trades, I've left them unhedged. It's clearly without confusing people with the final hedging position.
      But the video itself, wasn't about the trades, it's focus is to highlight the difference between the two trading styles.

    • @James-lq1po
      @James-lq1po 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Have to agree with this, you do say £30 profit when in reality it is a £30 'free bet' on that runner. It could result in a £30 profit, but more realistically the hedged amount should be the profit quoted.

    • @betangeltv
      @betangeltv  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I can't qualify every facet of everything I do or explain, it's just impossible in such a short time, so I have to generalise.
      I contrast and compare trades to show something specific. In this case one trade, versus three separate trades.
      I then do a live trade that does the same thing and complete it by hedging out.
      I can't see how I can be any clearer within the context of what I am trying to show.
      I think it's interesting that there is a disconnect between what people think is an opening and closing trade position.

    • @betangeltv

      Can't see how that is a lottery.

    • @vieira2007ify
      @vieira2007ify 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@betangeltv I called it a lottery because you can't be 100% sure that people will take those two bets. Some time ago I tried to play this way and few times I stayed with only one bet taken, in the long term it wasn't profitable.

    • @betangeltv
      @betangeltv  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Trading is all about taking risks, not avoiding them. So you can never be sure your trade will work. But offering bets to the market is long term profitable.
