I have LOVED this song since its original debut. I never paid much attention to the lyrics, the music, orchestration, and Gayle Garnett's fabulous voice carried me away. It still does today, 59 years later!
I was 12 years old when this song came out. I remember seeing her sing it on tv. Liked the song then and still do till this day I always thought it was a bit sad
In this version she says she'll "live" with him for one year. In the other she says she'll "stay" with him one year. Also, "love you every night" was changed to "kiss you every night." Fortunately, the prudishness does not diminish her magnificent voice.
I was 10 yrs old when my Dad sang this song to me in the car. He said that it was banned because every little girl needed to hear it and pay attention to it. My Dad died the following year at 35 and everything he told me took on mew meaning. I made this song myantra and motto, and a half century later it has EPIC meaning for every female of any age. ❤
This song was very heartbreaking for me as a young man. It it still is. I always imagined that the woman singing it was quite lovely. Now I see that indeed she was.
@@carterscousins4992Possibly because if you were that happy for a year, you would want it to continue and get better and deeper as time went on. Why would anyone want to start a relationship that they knew would end in a year and cause horrible pain when it did! 😢

I remember this playing on the radio in the 60s. Beautiful voice and attractive lady back then, born 1942 and supposedly still alive at 79, I looked her up after watching her acting in a supporting role in one of two episodes she did on the TV series Hawaiian Eye, S2 E7 Hawaiian Eye, titled White Pigeon Ticket where she played a secretary to a man potentially involved in a factory heist, the credits showed Gale Garnett, and I thought could it be The Gale Garnett? Yes! She had many talents, singing (her biggest hit), acting in 11 movies, and a number of TV shows including Hawaiian Eye twice. Very talented and attractive lady at the time. Yeah, I was a bit puzzled about why it was "banned" - I guess from certain radio stations?....I'm thinking that it's probably the "love you every night" line, which is a rather oblique and euphemistic reference to sex. Of course incredibly mild by today's standards, but back then it could well have triggered the censors. Also, the overall theme of the song - cohabitating with a lover for a year and then leaving - would have gone against the more traditional values of the time.

A song where the woman is very much in charge of the relationship -- ahead of its time. She was also the longtime girlfriend of the late writer Evan S. Connell ("Mrs. Bridge," "Son of the Morning Star" among other works).

It is amazing what lyrics are sung these days without fear of being banned now....back then it was different as social standards were stricter, the sensual lyrics of a song was deemed it might corrupt you....even in the 1980's the song RELAX by Frankie Goes to Hollywood was banned for being too sexually explicit. Why banned? Great to reflect back to the 60's. Always loved We'll Sing in the Sunshine, and recently became more intrigued. How did Gale Garnett handle relationships later in life? She wrote this song in her early 20's during a cultural shift, which may have influenced her early perception of relationships. Did she get married and have a family??
I never knew there was anything but the "banned" version. It is amusing that she got this advice from her father: had he followed his own advice she would never have been born or at least he wouldn't have been around to give her advice.
Well back in 1964 you couldn't promote people living together that were not married to each other, and stay with somebody didn't necessarily mean you had to live with them in the same house. And in 3 short years that all changed with the summer of love.
"Staying" with someone can be interpreted a little more broadly. Like staying with a job for a year then quitting. So, it can mean going with someone or dating them steady for a time. Whereas, to "live with" someone is quite a bit more specific.
@@39thala My comment was rhetorical. Of course back then the record company would never have allowed her to say "live with".
