Grand Rounds- Ovarian Compartmentalization of Steroidogenesis

The American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology has developed guidelines for learning for the subspecialty of reproductive endocrinology and infertility (REI). These guidelines specify that training should include information that provides the fellow with the ability to be familiar with the ovarian physiological processes including folliculogenesis, ovulation, corpus luteum development, maintenance and regression and steroidogenesis, and to diagnose and manage patients with diseases involved in these systems. This internet activity is designed to provide such training to reproductive endocrinology and infertility fellows as well as other practitioners of reproductive medicine.
EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES:
At the conclusion of the educational activity, participants should be able to:
1. Provide an overview of steroidogenesis.
2. Describe the levels of compartmentalization of steroidogenesis within the ovary.
3. Highlight ∆5 and ∆4 pathways.
4. Outline changes associated with the menstrual cycle.
5. Review potential implications of alterations in the ovarian steroidogenesis.
