  • Tour of the Caliphate Fortress of Gormaz located in Soria near the Duero River, also known as Castillo de Gormaz, it is the largest fortress in Europe built in the Late Middle Ages by General Galib on behalf of the Caliphate of Cordoba and in times of the Caliph Al-Hakam II. After the Battle of Poitiers against the Franks of Carlos Martel, the Muslims considered it necessary to build a fortress to guard the Gormaz pass and its northern border near Medinaceli and Zaragoza. The fortress changed over time from Muslim to Christian hands until its definitive conquest by the Kingdom of León, later giving it to Rodrigo Diaz de Vivar (El Cid Campeador) as a fiefdom and personal lordship. The fortress has been the scene of the film El Cid (1961) with Charlton Heston as the main actor and is currently part of the Ruta del Cid.
