    I love how transparent they were about the doubles in this movie, unlike the Black Swan, where they pretended Natalie Portman pretty much did everything.

    To be honest I haven't watched the movie BUT as a ballet dancer who was very insulted by the whole "Black Swan" scandal I applaud that the team of "I, Tonya" seems to be so very open about using doubles and naming them. Like Ballet Ice Skating is an incredible art form that can't be learned during the shoot of a movie. So thanks for explaining the details and transitions. It was very interesting to watch.

      Natalie Portman spoke about her double in multiple interviews. I don't know why you think the team was trying to hide it? She DID train for multiple months to make it as believable as possible and was transparent about her double doing the footwork and harder scenes. The only reason the double didn't get credit in the film is because doubles don't usually get credit.

      hydrolito being listed at the end credits is not the same as the credit they gave to Margot’s doubles. Natalie didn’t even thank her double in her Oscar acceptance speech, not that she has to, but it would’ve been nice. Plus, the publicity around Black Swan was always “Natalie did 99% of the dancing” when that’s simply not true and impossible.

    I love how the real Tonya Harding wanted to help train Margot so she didn't get hurt trying to attempt the things she did lol I think that's something that the movie kind of forgot about, is that the real Tonya was kind of a sweetheart, despite having some rough edges. She really cared about people, even if she couldn't get too close to them. You just see it in her eyes, she has a big heart. I think Margot did an incredible job, but I think that they were lacking a bit of that Tonya vulnerability until the very end.

      The choreographer stated that the doubles were able to do all the triple jumps except the triple axle, so they were accomplished skaters because some women skaters today still can't do the triple axle, although most do. Those they are not strong in triple jumps try to make up points in artistry.

    Woah I thought they just pasted Margot Robbie's face on the body the whole time but actually she did preparation and landing shots plus the 2500 head and torso positions for the special effects. She did lots. Skating training and replicating the accent. I'm so glad I went to see it in cinemas.

  • @ArteoftheMist
    @ArteoftheMist 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1536

    One of my favorite little tidbits about the initial discussion about filming the triple is the film makers finding out there's like 4 women in the world who could do one, and none of them were available because it was during the season lol. They did really well to blend the doubles together.

    • @rangerma5
      @rangerma5 6 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Artemist I don’t understand why they wouldn’t participate though? Because they’re obviously practising their triple axels for the Olympics, wouldn’t this be a good way of getting the practice in and also making money by being part of the movie?

    • @ArteoftheMist
      @ArteoftheMist 6 ปีที่แล้ว +301

      I think a major part of it was risk of injury - there's a few women who can do it but they don't land it consistantly which means there's A LOT of falling. There's a reason Mirai Nagasu landing it in the team competition was such a big deal, it's that rarely landed in competition. The other part is time/schedule - the skaters would have to be available on location for however long they were needed which isn't realistic for skaters who were in the midst of their competitive seasons. The skaters would have been in the middle of nationals and their grand prix assignments in the run up season for the Olympics.

    • @ceriseskates
      @ceriseskates 6 ปีที่แล้ว +155

      All the women in the world who can currently do a triple axel are either Asian-American or Japanese, and do not physically resemble Tonya Harding or Margot Robbie. There are only two women on the senior international circuit who are able to do one.

There is only one other ice rink in this area now, and that's where I live, in Vancouver, WA where she currently has been skating a lot. It's so wonderful to see her on the ice again.

    I knew instantly when the double came in because Margot's modern Jackson Artiste or Freestyle (label visable during the 94 Olympics scenes) boots became Edea Piano or Concerto boots during the spins and jumps. They are modern and made to take the stress off the foot when landing. A beginner skater wouldn't wear those advanced boots usually. The more you know!!!

    Really amazing movie, and compared to most Ice skating sports films, its incredibly technical, but still saw a few mistakes, half way through some of the jumps they forgot to change the doubles' skates making it look like tonya was wear Ice Fly's (a brand of skates that weren't invented for another 30 years) also that prep for the triple axel is actually a prep for a triple lutz, as she is clearly lining up for a toe jump, Don't feel this is hate, really loved the movie!

      I have a feeling the stunt doubles just didn't wear boots similar to Margot's and hoped no one noticed LOL. I thought she had Piano or Concerto? Maybe they were Ice Fly's, I'll have to watch it again. Sponsored by Edea? Margot wore Jackson freestyle for the relacing Olympic scene.

    • @meganelizabeth7199
      @meganelizabeth7199 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @jesspettiford1279 5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@cupcakemaniac123 I was looking for a comment about that. And the pre rotation is past 1/4. Although It's not a full flutz but it goes very very flat nearing inside and that there's so much pr is a little weird to me considering how they wanted perfect spins with no traveling but were fine with a super flat lutz.

    • @yayaharu3114
      @yayaharu3114 5 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      The pre-rotation, flat questionable Lutz edge and was that an underrotation? Well, these things rarely get called out on a real competition anyway. 😂

    • @mozartandi
      @mozartandi 5 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Well Tonya did actually go into her 3A using a lutz-lookalike entrance. What I find more ironic is that Tonya had a perfect triple lutz during her career. Great outside edge and no pre-rotation, so these stunt doubles couldn’t even replicate her perfect technique on film

    • @prettyreckless1752
      @prettyreckless1752 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@mozartandi I... don't think you understand the difference between a Lutz and an Axel entrance. Tonya's axel entry is a standard axel entry, the most basic way you learn to do it as a kid. A lutz, on the other hand, is a toe jump, so naturally the toe is behind for the entrance, which is what they mistakenly used in this shot.

    Nice breakdown I like to see the thinking process of a choreographer that has to use body double. it's very interesting. Two flaws that I obsserve: 1) the 3 lutz is actually a flutz. Tonya Harding was one of the best jumper in her era and her 3 lutz was among the best (height, distance, and correct outside edge takeoff). At least the producer should had used a skater that can execute 3 lutz like Harding did; 2) the 3 axel preparation is actually for 3 lutz. She skated backward using her left leg similar to standard 3 lutz entry and suddenly the next scene she skated forward with her right leg ready for axel jump. Props for the director, choreographer, Margot Robbie, and the body doubles for making this movie possible.

    is anyone else annoyed at the fact that she did a flutz instead of a lutz??

      Yes! And that she looked like she was preparing for a lutz on her left leg and then suddenly they changed the angle and she was on her right leg for an axel takeoff. Plus no one would ever land the triple axel with this hight.

    IF you know anything about Tonya's personality you'd never think she'd be a figure skater. A lot of people have described her as aggressive; nothing like a sweet snow princess like a lot of other figure skater.

      Which is why a lot of people didn’t like her because they thought she didn’t belong in figure skating.
