Your videos remind me of my grandfather. He was still shoeing horses at 65, and was always around even when he was wheelchair bound to watch me shoe. He had Texas ways when I was a kid (get the cows milked we have goats to work and a windmill to fix we can ride those Colts this evening). I am learning a lot thanks for the great videos.
Thank you! I enjoyed watching someone else bent over for a change! Your work is excellent! We have a lot of granite here in Arizona and I am inclined to use the Chiracaua heels on the back feet. I am 77 and still shoe my own anyway. I put myself thru college and drove a new pickup shoeing horses. A good thing pickups were a lot cheaper back then. Nailed many a head for $10. I bet one time I could shoe 2 in an hour! Damned near lost it. Won a nights drinking! Couldnt hardly get out of bed the next morning! Never did that again! I really enjoy your videos. Brings back a lot of memories. My family raised colts for the Remount program from about the 1880s to the time the horse units were phased of the US Army. Anyway keep your powder dry!

The best know how videos. I'm not a cowboy but my heart is in it. I'm just an old infantryman from the Marines. I'm a fast learner and I have 1500 acers with one Baja born horse, who loves being in the hills and valleys. Thanks

Hard work. Nice feet! I did 12 years trimming and rehab of hooves, because there wasn't any one else to do it. My 3 are barefoot, and booted where necessary. Yes! Mohair cinches are pretty, and the best! Can't wait to hear what the thing is hanging on the door!
Hi Deb & Pat - I know nothing of horses except for my lifetime love of them - I soak up all your lessons and someday I hope to be a part of horse life :-) The song at the end of some of your videos sounds like Tex Owens - my husband's grandpa's uncle...I think that makes him great-uncle? Anyway the song you play reminds me of Tex's famous Cattle Call - whoo whoo whoop and all :-) Thank you for all you both continue to do; it's not just for the cowboys or those lucky enough to have a horse - it's also a way for those of us that love who just aren't able to have them - I live vicariously through you; I could never share my thanks enough!! Trouble was I were mighty poor, like most ol cowboys are and wasn't fond of my ponys being barefoot ! I had already gone through two back surgeries so I did it in short stages like you say, with solving all the world problems in between !

I think that is a chain gather hanging on the wall. Used to shorten up a chain. I think I have seen only one before and it was actually in use at the time. Not nearly that big though. I may be off on my guess by a mile or perhaps his mystery item has a new use. I get 6 weeks here on shoes in western Ky. In horsefly season, I pull them off and let them toughen up. Too much humidity with the high heat living on the Mississippi river to ride in summer and no cattle work either. I do use the St. Croix extra rims that are wide and heavy and can reset sometimes a second time if the nail holes are not too big. The horseflies of summer ruin shod feet here because our horses will stomp the inside clinches over time and tear the nail hole all the way down to the shoe.
You are correct on the mystery item. Congratulations! I had no idea a horse could stomp the clinches down on his shoes. We have flies here and our horses do stomp their feet but we don’t have the wide variety of flies you have and they don’t draw blood! And of course, our horses’ feet are much drier and harder so the clinch issue is not a thing here.
@@PatnDebPuckett they will bang there feet together sometimes in an attemp to get the small greenhead horseflies off their ankles and if they run a foot down the side of the other by accident, the clinch becomes an easy target. It starts to roll with every hit. Shod horses in our summertime are better off stalled during the day. My horses live out in the real world and hide the best they can under toolsheds. I like Mr. Pat's trivia and mystery items.
Oh, and who builds the girths for you guys? I have bought mohair with stainless hardware from Bork and sons and been very pleased. I have a friend that I have shown Mr. Pat's mule cinch too and he is kicking around the idea.

Wish my shoes lasted that long maybe I get 8weeks in the rocks around here. That's good advice on what not to know sometimes wish I had heard that 30 years ago. You can ad welding to that list.
I'm one of those Farrier who Shoe those swamp Footed Horses... So so Tru. .. If a Gator isn't trying to bite my back side the hoof is to full of mudd and swamp grass and is 90%wet at all times. 😂 😂 I use to shoe in Oklahoma hard dry Feet.. Man i miss those days.. Cowboy Up.. Side note... Swamp Cows are craziest kind meaner from having to fight off pythons and Gators all day.. Lol... 😂

I used a wide Mohair cinch while I was in Virginia. Many used the neoprene then. Used the hose to clean mine. They last forever.
A shoer once told me there is 8 holes drifted in the shoes for a reason. Cost more than nails to make a return call to a farm

In eastern NC we run the horses barefoot. So sandy I don’t see a need for shoes unless we’re going to the mountains. When we used to run shoes we only got 6-8 weeks out of em.
We also use mohair cinches. The humidity is terrible all the time. Makes it feel hotter in the summer and colder in the winter.

The one thing I changed up in my shoeing to make it easier on me is I shoe 1 side at a time to give the horses hips a break. Seems like they lean a lot less on me.
Here in Florida, a lot of us use girths made of parachute cord...lasts longer in the heat and humidity...

Its amazing to me how many people have different ideas about shoeing a horse or horses in general. I'am in Florida still have pretty hard feet.
I used a mohair cinch never cared for those neoprene type. Nor the nylon yarn type. The humidity in Virginia and here in Alabama is horrible. Unlike the mountains of Montana and Colorado, where I learned the few horseman cowboy skills I have. The mohair would wick up sweat and would dry easily. I kept a couple of them in different lengths. I believe you can’t skimp on coins when comes to caring for your horses and mules.
Cost of a good cinch is more than some people’s saddles. Just saying.
another fun and informative video. i would like to know about your dislike of crupper and britchin. i've always used one or the other on mules and donkeys especially for packing and a crupper is standard equipment for spanish saddles riding those lusitanos and andalusians. also, about hanging a horse, when you are training a colt, when do you start, for how long, and how many days a week?
It’s not that we don’t like cruppers and britchins. We just like the wide back cinch better. The crupper on the Spanish saddle is traditional and is built into the saddle.
In the perfect world, after the colt has been roped and is halter broke, we like to hang them for 2 hours at a time. Then we take them to water and hang them again for 2 hours. This would happen 2-3 times a week. In the imperfect world, it happens whenever you’re going to be nearby. Some weeks it happens once and other weeks it might be 3 times. Some days you only have an hour or two while other days you might be home most of the day. The goal is to have the colt standing hip shod without a care in the world.

The trivia question is a chain choker some have only one ear and some two like the one you have.
When I do feet I have to take breaks and lay down. We are so dry that it is physically taxing just to trim the feet , even before you start to shape shoes. The one guy my son worked with would take 2 weeks to shoe his string, he would do 2 feet a night on the horse he rode all day so it took a while to get them done.
Perfect example of horses staying sound in spite of us.....

Well... I learned how to shoe a horse, shear a sheep and milk cows and goats. Lots of hard work. But I’ll bet you’re better at it than me! 37 years old and still learning, love your videos! Just curious do like goat milk?

Love your chinches. Very pretty... I ride English and one of my mohair cinches is set up for English riding... I love it! Super easy to clean and because I live in NC... I do hang it in the house to dry on super humid days. August and September are pretty dry so I keep it outside then. Thanks for the video
What would you recommend for a horse that pulls in rears up? When shoeing.

Farrier here. Interesting thought take from it what you will. What about "retiming" the horse or horses that are over reaching or forgeing so to speak. You can keep your front shoes the same and try to go up or down in shoe size and or change the with of web by buying a different brand shoe. Awesome video great work and you seem like a very funny guy to spend the day shoeing with.

I agree, don't ever admit to knowing anything about shoeing.
So to ask to ask for a cinchy horse cinch do I order a Roper style or how would I go about that? Because you wouldn't use that one for a mule cinch right is too narrow?
For a cinchy horse, we recommend a roper style cinch which is narrow up near the buckles but quite wide at the center. The narrow part allows the horse’s front legs and elbows to move freely without having the cinch roll up and gall the horse. The wide part in the center distributes the tension over a larger area.

I have a rolling seat that I have magnets on and converted it to my “box”. I spend more time on my stool than o do under a horse!!
I’m in the south, we just set them out in the sun and blistering heat, they dry out fast.
I had horses as a kid and never new much had know one to teach me I was as dumb as they come. I kept riding and me and that horse got along fine. I could ride it with just a halter on like you show just slightly move and the horse responded to what i wanted that is love between a man and his horse. Maybe it loved me because I only weighed a 100 pounds.

We rope all of our horses’ feet.

There’s really no such thing as a Mustang trim. There are wild horses that are born in sand and wild horses that are born in lava rock country. So it’s impossible to categorize the way that hooves wear into a single category. As far as leaving horses barefoot, it’s all about where you ride, how often, and how far. What does your friend in Penslyvania do? I recently moved from Colorado to Penslyvania and don’t know much about the horse stuff here or anything
you fergot one thing Pat..."never learn to shoe a horse, shear a sheep, or milk a cow" ... you forgot "marry up with a Gal"..... but I do not hold with that....LOLOL ... I was 62 and doing upwards of 90-100 horses feet a month, when I decided my back had had enuff and retired.....OnWard....

The horse and ponies I've come into working with have hooves and frogs so dry and hard the knives won't scratch them, a ( my opinion) so called shoer came from Fallon(NV) to trim some horribly abused horses and said a hoof softener ( (pine tar) was no good because it makes the hoof tend to crack and chip!!
My take is there's a point where you can use it too much, but I shouldn't have to use a 41/2" grinder to clean the frog, and under hoof!!
Slap me upside the head if I'm wrong to apply dressing for the next week just to be able to get in the and clean these feet..
If you can find Pine Tar, let me know. We are out and can’t find any over here. But yes, use whatever you can to get their feet to soften up a little bit. You can also try to flood a small area and make the horse stand in the puddle.
I always thought that you could add anything about irrigation. As soon as I touched a shovel I couldn’t get back to my horse.
