The band did not set out to record a more commercial viable album when making “Breakfast in a America”; it just had themes that resonated with a wider audience. @MikeCee7 If it's a double album on two CDs. A lot of double albums were released on one CD. Frampton live and Physical Graffiti are both at 8 million copies, but only one was counted twice.
@@petercena9497 Thanks for your reply, but I’m still confused. If it’s a double album on one CD. What is counted twice? If someone purchased the album (or the CD) it’s purchased as one album. So you explained that a double album can fit on one CD. (I understand that with the technology of CDs, pre & post 1986) - But I don’t understand what is counted twice? and why? And in your example where you say one album counted twice, but the other one did not count it twice. (even though I still don’t know what counted twice means)
Not one of these would make my "top 10 albums of the 70s" list, though some are really excellent (Animals, Abraxas, Rumours). I'm also fairly sure that Tubular Bells should be on the list as it certainly sold more than Breakfast in America.

Advanced sales guaranteed it for No1 in UK and USA . Admittedly, I don't think it was one of their strongest albums . But even so ... people at that time were DESPERATE for something .. anything from Zeppelin!
I thought Crime of the Century by Supertramp, Band on the Run by Paul McCartney and Wings and The Cars' debut album would have sold enough units to make the top 25 in the 1970s.

I had a look at that site, and after fumbling about for a bit, replicated your list. I like the fact that you rely on numbers, not just saying that an album is "great" because you like it. Of course, sales aren't quality ... but that's a different discussion. One problem with that site is their classifications. Madonna, U2 and The Police are classified as "alternative". Supertramp are classified as "rock" (while other similar bands are not). And their database is incomplete - The Sex Pistols, Roxy Music, The Stranglers, Brian Eno, Talking Heads??? I simply couldn't find them. Or am I missing the point of that site?

@MikeCee7 If it's a double album on two CDs. A lot of double albums were released on one CD.
Frampton live and Physical Graffiti are both at 8 million copies, but only one was counted twice.
@@petercena9497 But it doesn't count BECAUSE IT'S A LIVE ALBUM. How many times does that have to be explained??
@@petercena9497 Thanks for your reply, but I’m still confused. If it’s a double album on one CD. What is counted twice? If someone purchased the album (or the CD) it’s purchased as one album.
So you explained that a double album can fit on one CD. (I understand that with the technology of CDs, pre & post 1986)
-
But I don’t understand what is counted twice? and why? And in your example where you say one album counted twice, but the other one did not count it twice. (even though I still don’t know what counted twice means)
@MikeCee7 The Wall has sold 12 million copies in the U.S. but since it's a 2cd set it is credited with 24 million sold.
Not one of these would make my "top 10 albums of the 70s" list, though some are really excellent (Animals, Abraxas, Rumours).
I'm also fairly sure that Tubular Bells should be on the list as it certainly sold more than Breakfast in America.
Good point, re: Tubular Bells! Strange that it was not included on the list according to figures by Chartmasters website, I'm sure it should be there or thereabouts on this list.
@@VRPRocks But is it really a classic rock album though?
Black Sabbath?
Hotel California. Rumors. Frampton Comes Alive. Van Halen. No more needed.
I prefer Fleetwood Mac's "white" albumn to Rumours - but it IS very close there.
Rumours is pop not rock
@@rogerbeattie2263 It's both, actually.
The border between "rock" and "pop" is a very wide very shallow often crossed one, almost doesn't count as a border.
Is Bob Segar "Turn The Page" rock?
No, it's actually "modern Country" in style - but folks don't hit on it not being rock often.
That's where Metallica came in with their "significantly more rock" cover....
Jethro Tull- Aqualung!
YESSSS
What about it?
If anyone asks me why the 70s is my favorite music decade from now on, I'll just send them this video.
The Who had huge albums out as well as ELO.. SMH
No sign of any early Genesis, Selling England By The Pound, Foxtrot, The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway, Nursery Cryme, Wind & Wuthering, A Trick Of The Tail. All very fine albums IMO.
The best selling of those early Genesis albums is Selling England... which has less than 1m sales 👍🤘
@@VRPRocks Thanks for the info, I bought all of 'em!
All great albums, particularly Selling England. Dancing with the Moonlit Knight is my favourite ever Genesis track 👍🤘
@@VRPRocks Been lucky to see Steve Hacket perform that several times live, superb. He's still going strong to this day!
A true guitar virtuoso, and a nice guy too!
Who's Next by the Who should be on the list
According to the figures, that record "only" sold 4m copies, so nowhere near the top 25 listed on the chartmasters website 👍🤘
Except for the Beatles their aren't that many 60s oriented bands with record setting albums.
Sales for Pink Floyd albums before DSOTM are very average.
For me, Sheer Heart Attack by Queen beats A Night at the Opera.
70 's great concept album decade close 2 edge relayer quadrophenia..animals .thick n passion play..lamb lies dwn...many mor..greatest songwriting decade .saw in 70's startin sept 71..zep who floyd tull yess elp...now?? Im old
I'm surprised that only one Elton John album makes the list. I feel like he ruled the 70s alongside Zep and Floyd
Elton had some really big albums in the 70s, 'Dont Shoot...' and 'Captain Fantastic...' both sold over 3 million copies but that wasn't enough to make the Top 25 as well 👍🤘
If l counted right, Led Zeppelin placed 6 in the top 25, impressive. I fully expected to see Frampton Comes Alive, that live album sold like hotcakes.
The list is studio albums only 👍🤘
Sales in 70s was owned by Zep and Floyd if you didnt know that you may have not grown up then! Was there 100s of badass groups yup but some named in comments is prog crap!
Mine would be Grand illusion by Styx or pronounced Lyn-yrd Sky-nyrd
Had every album but the long run at one time or other.
Wow. Five of Led Zeppelin’s six albums released in the 70’s made the list. Five of nine overall. Definitely deserved. I was surprised, however, to see In Through The Out Door on the list. It’s a great album but often at the bottom of Led Zeppelin album ranking lists.
Toys actually sold more than twice what Rocks did
Advanced sales guaranteed it for No1 in UK and USA . Admittedly, I don't think it was one of their strongest albums . But even so ... people at that time were DESPERATE for something .. anything from Zeppelin!
@@robpaxson4455 They were talking about Led Zep, how did Aerosmith get into the conversation?
@@bricefleckenstein9666 someone posted, and has since removed the comment asking why Aerosmith Rocks wasn't on the list
@@robpaxson4455 Ah, so!
Makes sense now.
If you want the power trio of Aerosmith, you have to add in "Get Your Wings".
I thought Crime of the Century by Supertramp, Band on the Run by Paul McCartney and Wings and The Cars' debut album would have sold enough units to make the top 25 in the 1970s.
According to the figures, Crime sold less than 3m copies, the Cars debut less than 7m and Band on the Run just over 7m. All quite far from the 25 on this list according to their figures 👍🤘
@@VRPRocks Thanks for the reply and information. It's shocking, to me, how low all three figures are especially for Crime of the Century as it seems to be a universally loved album. Supertramp is my favourite group and Crime my favourite LP of all time.
I'm a fan of Supertramp as well, but in terms of sales BIA was their big one, 4 times platinum in the US and even 3m sales in France, I think its one of the biggest selling albums in French history
As for the other figures, they are still big, 7m for Band on the Run is massive, but I guess with 10 years of music sales, it's going to take a lot to get into the top 25 👍🤘
@footbru After spending the time making the video and posting it, I've also realised there are gaps in their reporting, with many artists not listed. Very annoying. I think I'll give that website a miss next time 👍🤘
@@VRPRocksthere are gaps for sure, but good luck finding a better and more comprehensive site.
It's a good site.
Aerosmith Rocks ?
Good point. I've just looked on Wiki and it says Rocks was 4m sales in the US, Dirty Deeds (wh was at 25 on this list) sold 7m in the US, so with worldwide sales I can see why Rocks didn't break the 25
@@BladesInExile Toys in the Attic outsold Rocks - but not by enough to make this list.
What about the Shaggs' Philosophy of the World? "My Pal Foot Foot" is the greatest song ever recorded in any genre!
Growing up in the 70’s, I’m surprised to not see any Kiss, Toys in The Attic and Rocks by Aerosmith, Cat Scratch Fever by Ted Nugent, Machine Head by Deep Purple and Billion Dollar Babies by Alice Cooper on the list.
So, obviously, those albums didn't sell in the top 25.
Toys was probably Aerosmith's best selling albumn - but WAY under the numbers of the albumns listed, even in US sales alone.
Same for Machine Head and Deep Purple.
You can't tell me Elvis's Aloha from Hawaii satellite show double album wasn't in top 25 70albums!! T.C.B. ⚡
This list is studio albums only, and checking the website it says sales of only 7m, which isn't enough to get near this list anyway 👍🤘
@VRPRocks thanks for the info , I enjoyed your show. I didn't realize it was limited to studio or just sales during the decade.
Wheres whos next quadrophinia...deep purple in rock..machine head.. black sabath .. peter frampton comes alive
Blondie: Parallel Lines, Dire Straits: Dire Straits.
Lynyrd skynyrd one more from the road ❤
No Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Rainbow, Thin Lizzy, Sex Pistols, The Clash, Motorhead???
Do any of those have an album that qualifies as one of the 25 top selling rock albums of the 70s?
Rainbow Rising
Montrose
Cadê, paranoid, machine head?
What about Alice cooper
Who’s Next
Yeah go back and look at the sales of Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours.
US sales ALONE over 21m - it peaked around 5'th on the RIAA diamond list, but has slipped some in recent years to 11'th.
Boy George "I want to explore Uranus " should be here 🤷♂️
I thought that was George Michael...
No Exile on main street, Hot august night, who...
No live albums or compilations
Bowie's Ziggy Stardust???
What about it?
No Deep Purple?
Sadly not, according to chartmasters their biggest selling album was Machine Head which had figures of 9.4m, just below the top 25 on their rankings 👍🤘
In Rock, Machine Head, Burn
+ Rainbow Rising et Long Live R&R
Blackmore "Uber Alles" !!!
The biggest secret, only purchaced to the initiated & those in the know ... Alex Harvey SAHB ... N.E.X.T 🎸 🌟 Sensational
Only 1 Queen album? Really?Me thinks ya’ canna mention “Night” without “Day”. Then there’s News of the World. No Lynyrd Skynyrd?
Ever hear of Freebird?
No Tapestry?! Everyone I knew had it!
Not classified as "rock" or "hard rock/metal" by that site.
How was zeppelin 2 not on the list!!
Might have something to do with being released in 1969 😉👍🤘
25 best selling albums of the 1970´s...... Who´s Next was a huge seller and so was Who Are You...... this just underlines the fact that lists like these aren´t really telling the truth, are they?
Sometimes our perceptions of things aren't reality though. As good as those Who albums are, they weren't "big sellers" on the scale of these on the list. You can see here, Who's Next was just over 4m and Who Are You was 2.3m : bestsellingalbums.org/artist/13288
Both a long way off the figures of the albums that made this 25, sadly 👍🤘
Who made this list is a number 1 led zeppelin fan!!!!!!!😂
As it says, figures from chartmasters.org 👍🤘
bat out of hell is not rock music, it is nothing but camp pantomime, and a load of american crap. my best album is who,s next.
I NEVER understood the Meat Loaf thing, couldn't stand it.
You must be high. What about Who's Next or Quadrophenia?
Were they among the top 25 selling albums of the 1970s?
Machine Head by Deep Purple should have been on the list.
According to chartmasters (where i got the info from for the video) Machine Head sold 9.04m which wasnt enough to get into this top 25. Figures are obviously disputed, which is why no one-source really agrees with another. Great album though for sure! 👍🤘
Areosmith Rocks
No ELP?
The who Quaderphia ?
Nothing the Deep Purple?????????😢
No Styx 😞
