    In my experience the cloze deletion cards aren't really that great if you're trying to actually understand things instead of just memorizing facts. Of course you don't necessarily have to use Anki for the understanding part of studying but I've found that it's really helpful to have cards that ask me to explain things. Like "Explain why you can't divide by zero" or "Explain the Gaussian elimination algorithm". Then when you're reviewing the card you answer the question as thoroughly as you can (and preferably speaking aloud), as if you're teaching the subject to someone else that doesn't have any previous knowledge on the subject. The answer side of the card should consist of just the key points of a good answer instead of some predetermined "correct" answer that you're trying to memorize word for word.
    Such cards obviously take much longer to create and review than simple cloze deletions but I think it's worth it because they force you to think and actually understand what you're trying to learn on a much deeper level than the cloze deletions and other simple question-answer cards. And I'm not saying you should ONLY use this type of cards; sometimes you just have to memorize a bunch of facts but I think it's usually better to focus on understanding rather than memorizing.

      You bring up some great points! I don't typically use it like that, but it sounds like you've found an effective method

    thank u. especially no music, just straight to the point. Otherwise its a 2010 intro with the annoying music in the back, while showing off the setup in teh background, then 3 minute slowwww tutorial and then the outro with more flexing.
    Best channel for Anki and any tutorials in general

    Came here looking for image occlusion. That part is great.
    Disagree with you about the basic card not being useful though. It's very useful, if you also remember the principle of not overloading one card with more info than your short term memory can handle. 1 question, 1 answer.

    • @AnKingMed
      @AnKingMed  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The reason I originally mentioned this is because a basic card can't be a cloze card but a cloze card can be a basic card. However, as I've gotten to know Anki more I admit there are some very useful cases for the basic notes

      @@AnKingMed Fair enough. I hadn't considered that logic.
      Just have to be careful about the whole blasting out memorisation without understanding approach that cloze deletion can encourage though. You can miss out on building understanding, there is no digestion of the info if you know what I mean. Making good flashcards is a bit of a skill that I don't think a lot of people starting out with Anki recognise. Phrasing your questions can be so important, and when you master that the basic card becomes very useful.
      An example from learning Python shows this:
      Q: Are strings variable?
      A: No.
      Q: Strings - are they variable or invariable?
      A: Invariable.
      One question encourages you to think more because it presents you a choice, whereas one word answers like 'yes' or 'no' can put you on autopilot.
      Long-winded reply, but I hope someone gets something out of it.

    Hi, I just came across your channel and I have really been enjoying it and learning a lot from you. As a beginner still to Anki I've been enjoying your basics playlist but noticed there a bit out of date at this point. I would love to see some updated versions to a beginners playlist. Keep up the great work though!
    Edit: I love the hint technique with the cloze deletion cards! I had no idea that was possible. I can see that as a Med student (not sure if you still are at this point) that you use Anki a bit differently than me at times. I would love to see some talk about any of the other card types as well. The type in answer cards are my favorite along with the cloze deletion cards.

    An Image Occlusion card seem like it is more important for studying something like medicine than other things like maths for example.

    I've always found with Cloze deletions I will read the first couple of words of a card and instantly click show answer. I know what the answer will be before I even read the full sentence/card. I find it teaches me to memorize the link between the first 2-3 words of a card and the answer. Doesn't teach me anything tbh. Don't know why everyone considers 'cloze' the gold standard.

    • @hazel3390
      @hazel3390 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      i mean can't other card types do that too? once you know the first couple words, you can guess what the question will be and therefore the answer

    Would you please do a video on the best way to use Anki for foreign language learning. Words,grammer, spelling and context are all difficult.

    • @AnKingMed
      @AnKingMed  4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      In our experience, Anki works best for building a vocabulary. On flashcards, you won't capture grammar, spelling, context, and other nuances of a language. But we'll add the video idea to the list. No promises about how quickly we get to it ;)

  • @teejihbai

    Yo what's the name of the add-on that you use that keeps all the clozes as "c1"?? Would be super useful for me!
    edit. Nevermind, on the new update Anki makes everything c1 if you use Ctrl-Shift-Alt-C instead of Ctrl-Shift-C. No need to use an add-on

    For the example you had shown, I really don't see much of a difference between Cloze and Basic card types. If I all need is to be able to match a one line statement to a basic answer, what advantage would cloze provide?

    • @AnKingMed
      @AnKingMed  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The cloze just gives you a little more context and puts it into a sentence. They are a little bit faster to review (so for med students this is nice). Basic may be better for things like language study

    • @jemand8462
      @jemand8462 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@AnKingMed I tend to agree with KinofBirds. I'm in med school and don'T see any reason to use cloze cards.
      Example: "what are the symptoms of dease A?" Answer: List of symptoms. You will never be asked "the symptom one of dease A is ... ?" and then you know the answer. You just have to know a list.
      I think cloze may be faster because you are giving hints in the sentence, which for me is like cheating a bit.

    • @AnKingMed
      @AnKingMed  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@jemand8462 You're not wrong. Cloze cards are faster, but I wouldn't call it cheating. With as much as you have to memorize in med school, its easier to memorize quickly and just get the patterns down and then really solidify that knowledge with practice questions. You could definitely use Basic cards, but it would likely take longer. The other thing is that cloze cards can do what basic cards can, but basic cards can't do what cloze cards can so I prefer to just use cloze for everything.

    • @yousufshad7741
      @yousufshad7741 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AnKingMed Why is it not cheating? Wouldn't the rest of the sentance/cloze act as a 'cue'/trigger for the answer. While in real life when you would need to recall this info and you would have no sentance to cue you to the answer.

      I think the easiest thing to do is reschedule the cards manually after you create them. Not very convenient, but this is worth looking into! I’ll see if there’s a trick...
