  • In which we discuss some of our most dramatic mistakes in four years of off grid modern homesteading -- how each one happened, and how we fixed it...and how we're feeling about things now.
We actually recorded TEN mistakes -- the second set is more in the world of ideas -- but putting it all together was too long for my computer to upload, so I split it in half. This is part one.
2:00 -- we built our yurt North of the trees (poor passive solar design)
5:23 -- we fed a field of potatoes to the elk (overreaching too early)
7:25 -- we dropped a tree on a shed (sloppy shed, sloppy tree cutting)
9:19 -- we fed a bear (actively prepare for bears, don't just react)
11:44 -- we built a house without fixing the drainage (no shortcuts)
part two is called "Five Mind Traps that Make Homesteaders Fail" and I'll link it here. • 5 Mind Traps that Make...
    Enjoy!

About the Fouch Family: We are Nick and Esther, and our three kids Milo, Stella, and Sadie. We have lived off the grid -- in the sense of not connected to the power grid -- for four years on three acres of wooded land in Southwestern Idaho. Nick is a finish carpenter working on building his own business. Esther is a writer, the author of a recent memoir called "What Falls From the Sky," and a daughter of the homesteading teacher and activist Carla Emery, who wrote "The Encyclopedia of Country Living." Nick and Esther were both raised in Idaho, near where we live now, but we've also lived in Massachusetts, Utah, and California. Our kids are ages 10, 8 and 5.
