Jerry: I CAN'T thank you enough for your very thorough, clear, and concise video on chair caning. I've had three 1860's chairs that I totally refinished years ago and just need caning. One the matte type, two with holes. The matte one went very easily. I just completed one with holes and it looks GREAT !!!!! You video was better then 2 books and 1 video I bought. You R the WICKERGURU. Mark in ILL.
Video series was enough to teach me to repair my chair seats. I had never caned a chair before. I appreciate the TH-cam version because I can go back when ever I need to review the instructions as needed. Thanks
As a child I would watch my grandfather spend hours and hours in his shop caning antique chairs brought to him to restore. This gave me some times memories to remember. Thanks
Hola Mike, I live in Lima, Peru. Your videos were most instructive and clear. I am planing to do now, at the age of 67, what I did back in 1953 when I was 9, when along with my granparents I helped them canning 12 chairs which were imported from England in 1927. Only two of those chairs are still "alive" and their canning is the one I did in 1953. I´ll pass you my video after finishing the first one. First I will rehearse with some twine, to make sure I make no mistakes. Jose, Lima, Peru
Recaning my grandaughters toddler rocking chair, doesn't look as good as yours but couldn't have done this for the first time at all without your good instructions.
I bought a child's victorian chair from a junk shop for only £3. It had four layers of paint and a piece of hardboard had been nailed on the seat. I found once I had stripped off the paint and removed the hardboard that it had once had a cane seat with all the little holes. You have helped me restore the chair to its origional state and my 2 year old son loves his new cane chair. Who needs Ikea when you can restore an beautiful old chair for half the price.
I have two antique, matching chairs that are family heirlooms with the seats broken through. I have been storing them for the past 30 years, hoping somehow they could be salvaged. Thanks to You Tube and your grace, I am now quite confident I can do this job myself. Thank you for sharing this with us.
finally just finished caning my first (and only!) chair seat - thanks for all the help, I am full of admiration for anyone who does more than one, but I am so glad to have conquered it - it looks amazing, I love it
This was very helpful. In particular, it was well paced. Not so slow that it was boring, not so fast that it was impossible to keep up. Not so chatty so you want to turn off the sound. Yet not a silent movie experience where you want subtitles. A excellently done instructional video. Thanks.
First instructional video I ever watched and actually learned something. Alot of companies should hire you to do their directional videos and written directions. Thank you
Excellent instructional videos. Now that I've watched a few times, I've actually started to cane a chair on my own -- something I would never have attempted otherwise. Thank you!
Thank you for VERY clear and easy to follow directions. I've always wanted to know how to cane new seats, and you've just taken the mystery out of it for me. I have two old chairs I'm recaning for my grandchildren. Now I'm part of the history of those chairs!
I've watched several of your videos and they're all excellent? I'm restoring several pieces of outdoor wicker furniture and your videos give me insight and confidence in approaching the project. Thanks so very much!!!
Great demonstration! I now have the courage and confidence to recant several antique chairs I've been saving for a long time. You sound just like my son-in-law, he's from Australia too and has the calm reassuring manner of speaking. Thanks
I've decided to repair my mothers chair. She hasn't been able to find anyone to do it for years. So I got an antique stool kit to learn on and, you're right, the cane broke a lot. But I learned the technique and learned from some mistakes. Now I'm ready to start on the chair and I plan to follow your video precisely. Thanks so much.
I am embarking on my first caning project. This is very helpful and gives me a good understanding of the process. If this is successful, I have two more chairs to do, thanks to my trash picking, garage sale buying wife. Fortunately, each piece is really worth saving. Wish me luck and thank you for the guidance.
This is sooo cool! I have to admit, I've never appreciated cane furniture, but I came across this video and I now really admire cane furniture. Such an art form, I can't believe I missed the beauty of it until now.
Thank you so much for this video - I have an antique rocker my mom gave me, and I want to pass it to my grandson, but the seat needs redoing. After watching your video, I know I can do it, and make it beautiful again!! My mom did caning, but I never learned how, so this will get me going!!
Thank you for posting this! I have a book to teach but this video was very helpful! I have several antique chairs to recane and I am confident that I can do it thanks in part to this video! Tammy in Connecticut, USA
I really enjoyed these two videos. I'm looking to do a wood related craft that's not too messy and needs a good-eye. This has got me enthused :-) Must go and check out some more. Thanks - Pete.
What a terrific video! The best instructional video I've ever seen. You have a lovely manner, voice, complete and clear explanations and tips, good camera work. I've never caned a chair before, but have been wanting to for many years. Now I feel I have the confidence to try it. Just yesterday I bought for a mere $20.00, a lovely oak rocker with a blown-out caned seat, and I am excited about trying to create a lovely NEW seat for it! Only thing I'm uncertain of is where to get materials and how to decide what size cane to buy. I'm sure I'll find some answers on the net:-) Thanks again!
Many thanks from UK, I have re-seated chairs with rush and am now tempted to re-cane a pretty painted chair, with the confidence given me by your excellent videos...I also understand the satisfaction of doing and making! strength to your arm.
I really didn't think I could attempt to cane an old rocker that I remember my grandfather caning. I was actually looking for where I could have it done, but after watching your instructional video, I am ready to do it myself! Thanks for making it look do-able! Great video!
Great Job! a pleasure to watch , your approach and enthusiasm to what you obviously love doing is really inspiring. I really love old furniture and have seen countless pieces thrown away because I haven't had the know how to fix it. It is a blessing that people like you share a little of your knowledge . Thank you Bernice:)
great video, I've ordered the caning and am planning on reweaving the seat on the antique chair we've had for many years. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
Thank you for this instruction. I began to recane one of my antique chairs a while ago and got discouraged. The instruction paper I used had a drawing of how you tie on a new strand when you get to the end of one. That was frustrating to try to follow, also the strands kept breaking. Thanks for the tip about the direction to use the strands and the spray bottle to keep it moist. You haven't mentioned anything about attaching new strands and I wonder why.
Ive just bought a lovely bergere chair which has a rattan back...its sorely in need of repair, hence the silly price (£25.oo)...so ive come on youtube to see how easy/difficult caning is...thanks o much for demystifying caning!! im def ready to give it a go now!! many thanks. :)
Fabulous videos. About to start my first project, an old chair from a set of 4. One difference is that the chair that I will be doing has a peg in every hole, and no border.
Excellent explanation on how to do this. Thank you for posting! I'm looking to make a cane seat for a canoe and I had no idea what I was doing. Now I at least have an idea.
This is the best tutitorial on this subject I have ever see. THANK YOU!! I have wanted to cane an old chair for a long time, NOW I can!!!! mh53eflyguy you are right on!
Fantastic instructions. We are restoring a bend wood rocking chair and it was just too hard to get all the old cane out of the grooves and it has been recaned previously so the back caning groove has been filled. My question is - can we use the bees wax, linseed oil and wood turpentine we have finished the chair with on the front of the cane?
Thanks for posting these great instructional videos! I am going to tackle a Bentwood Chair cane bottom and a foot stool to learn the real caning method. Off to looking for a box of golf tees!
Just finished my first chair. This really helped me. I have 2 more chairs to do and they should be better since I made a few mistakes but know how to correct them for next time. THANKS
I enjoyed your video. I will be watching it over more than one time as I wish to learn to Cain for a living. My next question is your best source for materials?
Thank you for explaining the procedure so clearly will now try my hand at it just got to source the cane once again thanks will look out for your videos
Very good video, hope you have a tripod by now. Question? Are you aware of a caning method known as the Blanchard order of steps. If so what is your thoughts and is there a video on this ? Regards, Colin
thank you for your videos, very clear! Have done one chair, half way through 2nd, with another four to go! My biggest problem is keeping the cane flat while weaving, any tips on how to prevent it from twisting? Seems no matter how often I check that it is not twisted, when I pull it through it has twisted somewhere, perhaps even more than once, which makes it a slow job! Also, when you say keep the cane wet, do you soak it, or just use a sponge as you go?
this video has been so helpful, i can't tell you. i don't know if i'll be able to do this, cuz i'm really trying to repair cracked cane. but just the idea that there are simple methodic steps i can follow if i want to take the time. otherwise, i have to keep buying sheets.($14) i've tried to re-cane my rattan rocker seat 3 times. no this isn't the first time i've re-done a seat. it is the 1st time, the cane has cracked over and over. i was at the stage of paying someone to do it, but i'm glad i ran into you. i'm going to try it. thanks thanks thanks
thank you so much! Very instructive video. Did not know it could be done yourself that easily. It will probably turn out more difficult than I think now, but I have confidence I can do this. The chair that needs a new seat used to have upholstery, so I need to prepare the seating first... What diameter should I take for the holes?
Great video and very explanatory. I have a similar chair with a broken seat and am thinking of recaning it myself. What would I need to buy exactly please. THX
Many thanks Susan for your kind comments, greatly appreciated. Very glad to hear that you benefited from these videos. Have a wonderful and wicked festive season.
This seat to hand weave from start to finish took approx 5hours. Not allowing for coffee, lunch and toilet breaks! With these kind of jobs you can take as long as you like....:)
Hi Collie, to ensure that the cane does not twist when weaving assist the cane when pulling through the other strands, a few strands at a time means less tension too. I only moisten the first inch of cane that I'm weaving through, the rest of the cane is woven dry. Should the cane be wet then the cane will have difficulty sliding through.
Thanks for your kind comments. If the diagonals cane are like a zig zag effect, then you are weaving incorrectly. My video 'How To Handweave a Bentwood Seat' should put you right. Good luck.
The spray bottle is a great idea. I will use it the next time I cane a chair. I have always used a sponge but the spray bottle may be a little less messy.
Thank you for your video. I just found a antique nurseing chair and the seat needs to be redone, with the help of your video I can do it. My question is where do you find the caning material I live in Canada?
I purchased fine cane and think I should have purchased medium. Is it workable? Do I return and start over? How do I tell for sure? I measured first with the old cane on then with it off. It's an antique chair with irregular holes. Should I smooth them out somehow first?
Great videos. Have a project with a couple of chairs which my wife wants to eventually paint. Is this a good idea? Is paint flexible enough or is lacquer the best option?
Robert Osborne No problems with spray painting either with oil based enamel or lacquer. Just make sure that you only cover the top surface of the rattan, and leave the underside natural. Rattan needs to breathe, and it will expand and contract somewhat with weather conditions, so be prepared to have some flaking of the paint occur.
Great instructional video. Thank you. My problem was the wicker began to twist as I progressed on the diagonals. Do you think I wove too tight at the start?
The pegs that you refer to is 3-4mm round core, 'reed' which you cut up into small pegs with a pencil point. You could use wooden plugs or just a little pva glue would also do the trick. Good pick up tho' I should have had that covered in the video. I'll just have to give myself a good caning, so it won't happen again!
You can stop and start as much as you like, and there's no need to keep spraying water. As long as the cane is supple you can continue where you left off, a day, a month, a year later. I prefer to get the job done during the time it takes to go through a good bottle of Shiraz! :)
I've been doing upholstery for a while and have a customer that has a chair seat to cane. With your wonderful instructional video I think I will give it a try. If successful how do you charge for the work? Thanks in advance!

You are very talented and professional. I can not wait to get started on my new found treasures. Thank you for wonderful instructions!
Thank you so much! This was so helpful - much easier than written directions. Every step is clearly shown.
This is definitely the best caning series on TH-cam I can't wait to get started this summer you're the best!
I am so pleased to find these videos. I want to learn to repair caned areas and perhaps get more creative from there. Thank you.
Many thanks from UK, I have re-seated chairs with rush and am now tempted to re-cane a pretty painted chair, with the confidence given me by your excellent videos...I also understand the satisfaction of doing and making! strength to your arm.
This has been very helpful. I have been studying a book, but actually seeing it done is most helpful.
Thank you so much - I can't wait to try to cane. I bought lovely old chairs at an auction and will be working to resotre them. Thank you again.
I really didn't think I could attempt to cane an old rocker that I remember my grandfather caning. I was actually looking for where I could have it done, but after watching your instructional video, I am ready to do it myself! Thanks for making it look do-able! Great video!
brilliant. I'm now inspired to have a go at the chair that's been sitting in the garage for a few years! Thanks.
it took me about 6 months cuz I kept puttin it off,but I'm finally done.It was not bad, boring, but not bad. your video's helped tremendously
Wonderful video. A bit nervous to try but am going to jump in and give it a whirl! Thank you very much for taking the time to teach!!
Thank you soooo much for this series of video. I cant tell you how valuable they are to me.
Beautiful.... I just picked up a chair that needs to be redone.. and this is a art I wanted to learn... Thank you so very much!!

You gave me the confidence to do the 6 chairs I have to do. thanks for a great video
Way to go Gregg. Happy caning!
Thanks. I've done a chair a long time ago and now have two more to do so it was very helpful.
Thanks. I feel more confident about doing this myself after watching it done. You did a nice job.
Thank you very much for this very clear and straightforward tutorial. I'm half-way through, about to start diagonals.
Excellent explanation on how to do this. Thank you for posting! I'm looking to make a cane seat for a canoe and I had no idea what I was doing. Now I at least have an idea.
I wasn't sure I could cane my own bottom, but now I know I can. Thanks!
great video - I had done this once years ago but could not have done it now without these valuable instructions............
I'll be back to watch as I'm in the process of caning my 1980's bent wood chair. thanks for the great info.
Good instructions easy to see how to cane my two old chairs. You've made it clear. Great job
Thank you for very clear instructions. Did an old rocking chair for practice, now to do our four dining chairs.
WONDERFUL, I have been wanting to try this for years!
Thanks for posting this.

Great instructions. Good tips on caning direction, moistening, golf tees, etc. Now to find the cane.
That was great, and looked real sharp when you finished. Thanks!
I enjoyed your video. I will be watching it over more than one time as I wish to learn to Cain for a living. My next question is your best source for materials?
try www.franksupply.com for wholesale prices.
Thank you for explaining the procedure so clearly will now try my hand at it just got to source the cane once again thanks will look out for your videos

Happy to help.
Very helpful. I have some sunrise chairs to re-cane. Think that project is beyond me for now :)
Great video and very explanatory. I have a similar chair with a broken seat and am thinking of recaning it myself. What would I need to buy exactly please. THX
Excellent instruction. Great skill to have. Next time I see an old cane chair at a garage sale or curb side that needs repair I natch it up. thank you
This is so informative - have a c 1900 tub cahir that needs to be redone - needed to see how it was all done - thankyou
Thank's I've got some old chair that I am restoring and needed some info and your video was just the ticket
Thank You !! Im very excited to start caning, where is the best place to buy supplies??
you made it look easy.where do i buy the cane and other tools to start doing my first chair.
Very useful and helpful. Doing my first chair so great to have this as a reference. Thank you.
Many thanks Susan for your kind comments, greatly appreciated. Very glad to hear that you benefited from these videos. Have a wonderful and wicked festive season.
@philo1945
Thankyou Jenny for your feedback. So it's been a while since your last caning!! Good luck.
I just finished a chair today for a customer. What a job.
This seat to hand weave from start to finish took approx 5hours. Not allowing for coffee, lunch and toilet breaks!
With these kind of jobs you can take as long as you like....:)
thank you for the video it has inspired me further to cane some of my chairs. great teacher!

I'll just have to give myself a good caning, so it won't happen again!
Thank you for the video I will be watching it again as I have a chair to do, thank you

Great video, takes the mystery out of it!
Thanks a bunch.
