I write raps in my head but when it comes to rnb I have to do his process. I play the whole beat and just create the melody and say a bunch of random shit and then if I like the melody for the hook ect I write around those melodies until the song is done. The problem with that is eventually melodies can become redundant and stagnant. At that point you have to create the melodies ect as you go. But the key is to stick to the concept and don't always settle for the 1st line that pops in your head but rather the line that makes the most since and push forward. As you can see with lupe its a constant rinse and repeat until it all makes sense.

It means you don't need to have any high level breath control... so in that sense i think it's easier. I gotta give it a try.
