Most depressing thing is you can't find anyone after the ending of the game. They just... left you. Without a farewell.

Because we tend to think of "endings". The end of the story is not the end of Geralt's life. Most of them would surely visit him after some years.

Yeah, it's kind of like this for original Geralt in books - he generally travels solo most of the time, comes across his various friends and sometimes travels with them for a while. Plus most of them live by travel (apart from perhaps Triss and Yen) and their work is solitary. In all honesty Geralt probably hightailed it out the vineyard after he got bored.

The coolest moment/detail in any video game ever: During the one Witcher contract where you have to hunt down the School of the Cat Witcher, if you are wearing a Witcher gear set (like I was) he will notice it and call it out when you approach. Funnily enough, I was wearing the School of the Cat set when I was on the contract, when I found him, he remarked "Hm, a School of the Wolf necklace but a School of the Cat armor... Must be a cross breed."
CD Projekt Red is so awesome.

The most depressing and somewhat disgusting thing I found in the Witcher 3 was in that land that never flowed with neither gold nor honey; Gors Velen, also known as just 'Velen'. Before sending their children down the trail of treats most parents had considered all that may happen to their children and decided "not to dwell on it" probably expecting the worst. We learn later on at the Sabbath that the "Ladies of the Wood" would give the leftovers of there meals to the peoples who attended, meaning that the parents might unknowingly be eating the remains of their own children.

I dont think Gors Velen and Velen are same. Gors Velen is very close to Isle of Thanned (the mage island) and a very well- established city. Velen is predominantly rural and swamp.
That being said, Velen was mentioned in books one time in passing, but I don't remember which book.

The one about elves reminded me of a quest called Extreme Cosplay in Toussaint. It's very easily missed imo and has a great story behind it (make sure you read all books you find, there's plenty in the garden), which adds up to the whole depressing mood of elves vs humans war.
Also there's a brief interaction somewhere in Velen when you pass a small house with starving children in it. You can either give them money or food (or nothing), but there aren't traders around so it's clear that they'll die soon anyway.
Lynch Mobs and Empty Coop quest also reflect the vibe pretty well, but TW3 generally did a good job conveying the tragedy of its world I think.
    Great vid as well!

I'm aware I'm a bit late to say this, but there are 2 bodies like that in Toussaint that I can think off the top of my head.
One is by a son, addressing his father, and how the son cracked under the pressure imposed on him. The son's body is hanging from a tree, and Barghests prowl the area. Geralt also says "something isn't right" while he is in the vicinity.
The other is that of a lover, who obsessed over lady of a vineyard, who loved someone else. The lover/ the guy hanging from the tree approached the Witch of the Lynx Crag (the same one from the quest where a woodcutter finds a bleeding tree, which is revealed to have a women stuck inside, waiting for her lover to come). The witch tells the lover to do something which would make the Vineyard lady love him, but actually a leshen somehow comes and starts haunting the vineyard. The Vineyard lady dies. And the man then commits suicide.

I liked the background touches. Although I think Avarti is incorrect in his view of elf-human relations. I always had the impression that while individual human-elf relationships are multi-faceted, humanity as a whole tended to push into and out-compete elvish groups as a tide of history thing. For all of the elves ancient knowledge, humanity tended to be agriculture based and hierarchical, and better able to absorb casualties in the long run. In short, the Witcher's theme is not that some historical moment was missed wherein humans and elves might have otherwise lived in harmony over the long haul. Rather, it is that despite positive relations between the occasional elf and human (and group thereof), over the long run humanity is at the tail end of successfully pushing out and asserting dominance over elvish groups. Roche definitely fits this mode. The comparison is more homo sapiens sapiens versus neanderthal (especially with some degree of interbreeding but a definitely more dominant group), or Native Americans versus European settlers.

Did you read the books? I'm all against hating elves but they are pretty bad in the world of the Witcher and I'd argue that the conflict between humans and elves is mostly the elves fault.
This however, does not justify how bad they are treated in the northern kingdoms during the time of the game and the books.

  • @quint3ssent1a
    @quint3ssent1a 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Eeeh, I'd say the part about elves was misjudged. In Witcher 2 one of side quests allows you to deduce what happened to Vrans, and it seems that they had fallen victim to engineered elven bioweapon, a plague which, apart from killing a number of Vrans, also rendered them sterile. In witcher books, Ciri visits one of the world where elves are dominant race, and they had enslaved remnants of humanity after committing genocide (by unspecified means, probably bioweapon again). So, the moral of the Witcher books (and also games) can be summarised as follows:
Elves had their chance once, but humans won't give them another. And while elven civilization at it's height was majestic, humans can achieve similar feats if given enough time.

Adnan Khashi looks to me like some kind of Skellige armor like a hindarsfjall heavy armor or something. I’ve come across it while doing markers on Skellige but I never keep it. I preferred my bear gear.

In my opinion, the most depressing thing of this game is nothing but the whole region of Velen.
A few days ago i had to make an assignement in which i had to portrait a very strong feeling. In that moment i had just finished the game so i was only thinking about all my experiences of it. after all, i ended up deciding to tell what would be the life of a middle age peasant in one of those small towns that were always suffering all the main and side effects of the war. Everyone who read my story thought not only that i had made the best one, but also the most depressive one. I received lots of possitive comments but, the truth is that i didn´t tell no story of mine, no, i only did a good representation of that horrible feeling that was always around me while passing through Velen.

I hit a bug when it came to the mercy kill. I tried to do it, and the screen cut to the next scene, but suddenly I had a dead version of the dude and a live version right there, but I couldn't interact with either and the quest marker didn't go away. Anyone else have this issue?

For me personally one of the saddest part about the witcher was the sheer amount of r*pe and s*xual assault towards the women of the world that you are completely helpless to do anything about. (with a few expeptions where you are able to intervine like in the crows nest baron keep)

Let me be abundantly clear. If you stumble across this video and haven't played TW1, while you're watching this get straight over to GOG and buy the Enhanced Edition. The Witcher 1 came out in 2007 and is far ahead of its time and peers, and is an excellent game.

Far too many people. I can see why people also struggle to play older games when used to certain gameplay mechanics that aren't in previous titles. I used to believe the first game was hardest due to the RNG factor, right up to playing Blood and Wine and fighting the Asps(misspelled, the red haired vampires) since they are the hardest vampire type that was in both 1 and 3.

Great vid, but you’re wrong on one thing: the War between humans and elves was not avoidable, but inevitable. Elves see themselves as the master race, and while some of them may have viewed humans and impressive curiosities, most saw them as lesser beings. Thus, humans were systematically oppressed and enslaved wherever these “higher beings” existed. It was only a matter of time before the humans would either go extinct, or live out their lives as chattel, or fight back.
Once the latter happened, it would lead to one of these races wiping the other out. If you’re a self-hating misanthrope, you probably think the decadent, arrogant elven civilization should have won out at the expense of humanity. But as a human, given the choice between our annihilation or theirs, I have to choose the former.
Right or wrong is irrelevant. Only when your kind can survive can it afford the luxury of moralization.
