  • The quality of my audio started to degrade to the point where I could not take it any more. In this video, I walk through troubleshooting a dbx 286s mic preamp and sound processor. Some clues were provided by the forum post referenced below. There is also another video I will link to where samples of poor audio are given that sound similar to my issues.

Thanks for this. Just a tip for anyone reading, you can do the rework with a normal soldering iron and flux. I find it easier and more reliable than hot air for making sure pins are properly flowed.

I agree with you. Given that these components were surface mount with legs, it's probably a better technique. I just did not want to deal with bridges.

@@chuckbenedict7235 Fair call. If you use enough flux and the right tip, bridges are nothing to worry about though. Solder always flows to the hotter surface, so if you clean the tip, add some flux and just touch the bridge with the tip it will remove it instantly :--)

Sorry to hear. You can get a new hot air rework station for under $80 from Ali Express. Get flux as well. Probably can get a used one for less on eBay. You could also try a local college...they have labs they might let you use, or fix it days.

Too late for me, I throw my 286s away, only one week ago, with the same error... Lucky me, I have a second one!

    Hello, good evening!
Do you have the schematic for this equipment that you could provide to me (dbx286s)?
    Thank you very much.

I pressed the 80Hz High Pass to test it out and suddently my mic stopped working.
I tried to turn off and on the DBX286s but I think it's dead and I don't know what happened.
Do you have any idea ?

Did you turn off phantom power by mistake?

No no, but I let it cool down like 2hours and it's back alive working 100% as before.
