- Cockington is a village renowned for its beautifully preserved thatched cottages, which line the narrow, winding lanes, close to the seaside town of Torquay. This picturesque village in Devon is a quintessential representation of English rural charm and one of the top places to visit in Devon.
Many of the cottages date back to the 16th century, reflecting traditional Devonshire architecture. The village's centerpiece is Cockington Court, a historic manor house set within an extensive country park. This estate, with its origins in the Domesday Book, has evolved over the centuries and now serves as a vibrant hub for arts and crafts. Visitors can explore the manor's gardens, enjoy craft studios, and experience local artisan creations.
The village also boasts a charming medieval church, St. George’s, dating back to 1068.
The surrounding Cockington Country Park has 450 acres of woodland, lakes, and meadows. Well-marked trails invite visitors to immerse themselves in the tranquility and natural beauty of the Devon countryside making it a great destination for those who want to know what to see in Devon.
Cockington's preserved heritage and scenic surroundings offer a delightful contrast to the bustling nearby coastline, making it a perfect spot for both relaxation and cultural enrichment. Whether strolling through its enchanting lanes or exploring the artistic endeavors at Cockington Court, visitors are sure to be captivated by the village's enduring charm. nice, loved the church
Thank you for watching our film, we are glad you enjoyed it. The church is Devon's oldest and has been a place of worship for over 950 years. The pulpit is thought to have come from a Spanish warship during the time of the Spanish Armada. It was washed up in the bay and taken to the Barn where it lay untouched for centuries before being installed in Cockington. Some say it was from where the captain preached and others, that it was the crow’s nest. Thank you for your comment :)

Thank you for sharing your thoughts! Your perspective as someone who has seen Paignton and Cockington evolve over the years is a valuable insight to the area. Rob
