I come back, again, at age 65 to listen to young Han Kim's impressive talent and his performance of Three Pieces at age 13 (an age when many children are just beginning to play very basic scales and simple compositions). I have listened to this several times over the years. When I first performed it so many years ago at age 17, my best overall performance really could not match his here. Musician snobs who are grumpy nitpickers and ever-stingy with compliments of performances by others notwithstanding, this is a beautiful and powerful bear to master or even play decently from start to finish, even for an experienced clarinetist. I still love and treasure it. It sucked me into being a lifelong fan of Stravinsky, who is on my short list of all-time favorite composers. He obviously loved the clarinet at least as much as I still do. Solid performance here by young Han Kim many years ago. Well done.
i am so ridiculously jealous of this guy. i'm 14 and no. just no. id have to practice constantly for the next 5 years to be even half as good as him. He is amazing.
@bene951 The entire piece is supposed to be bland. The only part that's different is the last line, which is supposed to be forte and faster. My teacher's teacher studied this piece with Stravinsky, so he's an expert. His teacher asked Stravinsky what the point of this piece was and he said there wasn't one. It's music for the sake of music, it's supposed to remind you of outer space or something.
Excellent playing. The 2nd piece is especially tricky & he lays it out beautifully. In the past many have played the 2nd much slower than the composer indicates but Kim plays it close to the marked tempo.
are you kidding? this guy doesn't play what Stravinsky writes in the score. what Stravinsky writes, Stravinsky must get (the huge subito fortissimo at the very end of the 2nd piece is an insult to common musical sense, quite frankly...)
Garry Smalls This is his interpretation, after all. Whether or not one agrees with certain details is immaterial. When I've performed it, I've done it somewhat differently, but I'm not arguing with his performance.
This has nothing to do with 'interpretation'. This is about PLAYING WHAT IS WRITTEN. Especially when it comes to Stravinsky. Stravinsky is VERY clear in what he writes. *Always*. If he puts breathing marks in, they should be 'played' and 'heard', whether or not you as a performer need to breath. They are part of the music. If he writes SUBITO MENO FORTE in the very last phrase of mvt 2, HE MEANS SUBITO MENO FORTE. It's not rocket science, is it! Just play what's on the damn page!
very well executed. I find no problem with your body movements this time. All was excellent!!! I find your interpretations similar to Karl Leister's interpretation. Were you influenced??
Very beautiful playing for your age and flawless technique. Try to keep a consistent flow of air, especially through legato passages; I'm perceiving a doppler effect-like sound. In this recording, low notes seem to spread a little at a loud dynamic, along with pitch going a little too far south. Wonderful interpretation. Keep up the good work!
@greenM98 That a joke? I've played both and the mozart is WAY easier. Mozart concerto is like grade 6/7 (By Australian standards) the three pieces is grade 7/8. The only thing thats hard about mozart is that its a longish piece otherwise the rythms are all extremely simple and the articulation is as difficult as you want to make it.
one of the best performance that I've seen but actually I didn't like 2nd movement,it should be with more different colors, and also with more feelings in the middle part...but totally it's really good, bravo!
@@s3fruit969 wow, why are you so demanding? He's a kid! I wish I could play 10% as well as he does. Who are you to be so knowledgeable yet apparently bitter? What's the story behind the sex fruit? 🍆

Someone calling it a song isn't too valid of a reason for making their opinion invalid.. but then again this is my own opinion, so think what you want.
There should be no tempo fluctuations in any of the three pieces and very little dynamic fluctuation in the first (except the very last measure). Stravinsky explicitly wrote “the dynamics, articulations, tempo markings and breath markings in the Three Pieces should be strictly adhered to.”
Don't worry rickqg86, you are allowed not to agree with me, it is useless to be so aggressive. I maintain that this clarinetist does not play Stravinsky with the correct style, and I assure you that I speak about what I know very well. Please, don't forget that the respect is the fundamental principle of the exchange. Real musicians know that.
As a clarinetist, just listening to this is not only amazing, but gives me so much wow, in a good way and how the heck.
i almost fainted at the second piece... that was stunning. but when i read he was 13 back then.. i pretty much fainted

I thought i was awesome until i heard this. I think this blew my chance of being the best Clarinetist! Well done Han KIM!!!!!
Rightttt agreed
It's not a backup. Two of the three movements are for A clarinet and one is for B-flat clarinet.

You have really been improving so much! Congratulations!!!
Superb! Superb! Stravinsky has great promise.

I see Stravinsky had something against clarinet players..
Actually these 3 pieces were written for an amateur clarinetist

I agree with ingen225. Sometimes his rests are too long and notes are kind of long also. Other than that, it was great!

Agreed, I was definitely going to say exactly the same thing 😜
It is Stravinsky though.. I'm thinking that Stravinsky would have welcomed the unconventional take on the second movement.
I agree with the person who said his style is a bit off, but I know I didn't play the technical passages that well or fast at my recital! rahhhhh :p
Wow.
Is the 2nd piece supposed to end forte ?
The second piece was a bit too fast and lacked Con Elegance feeling but the other two movements very great.

What grade is this solo, just curious?
12 years too late but it’s past a grade 7. I’m learning it at 14 and I just learnt the Weber concertino which is a grade 7.

Not good but not so bad for this age. We cannot play Stravinsky like this, with as much rubato. This young boy must learn the correct style !!!
not good. he really dont know this song. of course,he is child yet.
