  • Tonight I interviewed Corinne Segura (www.mychemicalfreehouse.net/), one of my Mastermind students who helps people with Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (aka MCS, or Environmental Sensitivity), which she also suffers from herself. We discuss how home building and home improvements need to adapt to people with this condition, applied specifically to the TinyLab and our new 3,000 sq ft house that's almost finished.

I have had MCS for 35 years. The best homes have bare bones meaning try not to have layers meaning if you have a cement floor basement either have the floors polished, not while you are living there or ceramic tile. No subfloors to put wood or laminate over the concrete. Less is best. No laminates, vinyls etc. prefinished hardwood and ceramic tile work for me. No new furniture comes into my house. Best paints are AFM safecoat also caulking. That is a USA company. My life has been hell but I have figured out how to do things. No fragrances or cleaning, products. Make my own. Hate vinyl plank flooring. How about we build houses without all this toxic crap. My son built a square log home. I had no problems visiting him from day one. Hardwood and ceramic on basement floor. Absolutely no gas stoves or wood burning….bothers us. There is formaldehyde free plywood.nnRockwool almost killed me. There is fiberglass insulation formaldehyde free. No spray foams. Mattresses are a problem. I own a very expensive Vispring. I am very allergic to memory foam and latex. Bedroom must be absolutely toxin free. Sleep deprivation makes MCS so much worse. Also your diet is very important. Thanks. From Ontario🇨🇦

If you want to know what things to eat and build with, go to any Old Order Amish community, see what they are using, and use it. I had a friend that lived near Mennonites, and I realized by visiting there that we need to adopt more of their way of life in this regard. I noticed they don't wear perfume, build with products that come directly from mother earth, that are literally only touched by hand and saw. They tend to live where the air is cleaner. They're pretty much chemical free. They also eat organic and have community support. Previous to me figuring out how to live with this whole MCS thing myself, I then thought maybe I should move in with the Old Order Amish for a few months to try and heal ... see if it was possible. I actually think I was on to something. If not moving in with them, we need to need to model after them in their foods and building products.

Great interview! I learned a lot from both of you and look forward to learning more.
Are there consumer and/or prosumer tools you can use to test for toxins, VOCs, etc that are already in your home or for a material or product that you are considering purchasing and installing or bringing into your home? I understand higher quality testing and measuring tools do cost more, but the more affordable tools like these get for homeowners to use and the easier they are to understand, the more I think they will help homeowners communicate to builders, remodelers and manufactures of materials and products what they do and do not want in their homes-thus forcing the market to positively adapt to the customers’ needs and wants.

Wait what you can’t smell flame retardant OK well that’s where each person with chemical sensitivity is so very different one from the other there are no exclusions 😢
I would laugh in certain MCS groups because one person who was fine with one product would even gaslight another person who was the human mind is a curious thing.
But this is also why people with chemical sensitivities don’t do well living in community because one person sensitivity just limits another persons opportunity because we’re all similar yet different than what we’re sensitive to. It just increases the likelihood of incompatibility.
